During 1949-1960, Electroputere VFU has produced locomotives used in mining operations and trams, turning to the production of diesel Electric locomotives in 1960. After 1989, the activity of the factory was focused on the modernisation and capital repairs of LDE 2100 HP and 5100 kW type locomotives. After conducting a consolidated investment program and through its work with prestigious clients in Switzerland, Sweden, France, Germany and Italy, Electroputere VFU has become renowned in over 10 countries on 2 continents. This achievement was possible only with the support of a specialized workforce which has the knowledge and necessary skills to develop innovative, sustainable, green products.
Electroputere VFU means 6000 designed, newly constructed, repaired or modernized locomotives, metros translated in over 20 types of different projects, constantly innovating and bringing added value to the industrial base of Romania.Nowadays, being a member of Grampet Group, Reloc SA- Electroputere VFU wants to regain its former prestige, building its strategy around the experience of its employees and the quality, capability, endurance and performance of its products, creating thus a strong and competitive name on the railway market. Electroputere VFU Craiova and Reloc aim to become a global supplier of traction rolling stock and to consolidate its market position on the segment of newly built railway vehicles.
The Terra Nova project began from the need to build a
locomotive which could perform heavy shunting and light
rail service adjusting its tractive power in order to save
resources according to the operation it has to perform. It is
an innovative and robust product that restores the glory of
the industrial area of Electroputere, which in the past built
locomotives renowned for their capabilities and
performances. The locomotive was entirely designed and
built in the Electroputere VFU-Reloc factory.
Every market has its own specifics. We have built Terra Nova to be flexible,
dynamic and easily adaptable to the operations the client wants to perform in
order to conduct efficient transports and save resources. It is a one of a kind
product in its class type, being superior to other similar products in terms of
technical equipment, performance and control systems. It has numerous
competitive advantages, challenging the existing shunting locomotives
manufactured globally.

In the current context, there is a high quantity of goods transported and a limited
number of railway vehicles to execute the carriage. Benefiting from this
opportunity, RELOC SA- ELECTROPUTERE VFU CRAIOVA has built this
locomotive from scratch, managing to integrate the most complex and
advanced technologies in order to ensure a reduced level of fuel consumption,
high autonomy, reduced C02 emissions, reduced driving noise, but also the
possibility to be adapted to different working environments in order to respond
to the most diverse and complex demands of its customers.

This locomotive is different from those of the
same class through its enhanced flexibility.
Having two engines, it can easily adapt its
traction force depending on the number of
handled tones, the distance travelled, but at the
same time having an efficient consumption and
low CO2 emissions. Moreover, its manufacturing
can be easily adapted to all types of gauges to
be able to service a multitude of markets.
Using the latest technology from Caterpillar for
the motorization and electronic control of the
consumption of fuel and oil, the level of
resources used is thus kept at a minimum being
adapted to the activities conducted, but in the
same time delivering high traction
performances.
Terra Nova has integral traction on 4 axles
regardless if only one engine or both are
functioning and delivering traction power in
accordance with the operation executed:
shunting or light line services. It is capable of
selecting the operation of only one or both
engines according to the need of the tractive
effort which is to be provided.
The Terra Nova engine incorporates green
sustainable technologies which deliver low and
efficient consumption of resources, the filters
and technologies used enabling a reduced level
of pollution in line with European Standards for
Environmental Protection.
The production line for this locomotive can be
configured according to the customer`s needs.
In this respect, Terra Nova is a dynamic and
versatile product which will be available in
different versions.. On the basis of the quality,
circulation safety and environmental protection
imposed by this industrial market, Terra Nova will
be manufactured under different levels of
performance, gauge, price versions and
electronic equipment.
Innovation is the word which characterizes the
Terra Nova locomotive best. It is fitted with a
start-stop system which ensures an even more
efficient use of resources, electronic systems for
monitoring and control, accessory operating
system, centralized informatics systems for
commanding and diagnosis.
Having two Caterpillar engines, Terra Nova is not only powerful, but also versatile and flexible, dynamic and easy adaptable to the most demanding operating conditions, the power being supplied by two engines of 630 HP totaling 1260 HP traction force which can be applied in individual or dual mode depending on the specific transport conditions.
This project was developed in partnership with Caterpillar, the largest manufacturer of diesel type engines in the US, having a long-standing tradition in this field. Born out of the desire to create an innovative product with a high added value, Caterpillar was the only supplier which could provide the needed solutions. The signing of this agreement gave us not only strength and confidence, but also pride and enthusiasm to work with an important global player. We have an agreement which involves mutual benefits and the possibility to adapt the production according to the specifics of the targeted markets. In the first stage, our target will be the manufac-turing of 3 locomotives/month and setting up an automated construction line.
