Inching Capability. Left brake pedaloperation allows the operator to reducerimpull to 25% then brake for moreprecise inching when approaching atruck or making directional changes.

Rimpull Control System.Allows operator to adjust maximumrimpull from 100% down to 90, 85,75 and 65% using a four-position dialwhile in first gear. Matching rimpull tojob conditions provides greater tractionin slippery or rough conditions for betterperformance and longer tire life.

Stable Design. Low mounted heavy-duty power train components ensurea stable machine.

Torque. Torque is developed at thewheel, generating less stress and wearon the axle shafts.

Axles. The front axle is fixed, and therear axle oscillates ±10°, which allowseither rear wheel to rise or fall 677 mm(26.7 in) while all wheels remain on theground for maximum stability, greatertraction and a more comfortable ride.

Differentials. Standard conventionaldifferentials allow one tire to spin fasterthan the other, keeping developedtorque out of the axles.

Axle Shafts. Free-floating axle shaftscan be removed independently of thewheels and planetaries for quick andeasy servicing.

U-Joints. Permanently lubricated forgreater durability and long service life.Only the slipjoint requires manuallubrication.

Oil-Cooled Disc Brakes. Four-wheel,fully hydraulic oil-cooled multipledisc brakes are completely sealed andadjustment free. Two brake pedalsallow standard braking with right pedalplus rimpull modulation braking withleft pedal.

Brake Cooling. The brake oil coolerprovides additional cooling to the brakediscs for greater durability.

Filtration. Screens on the brake circuitminimize the risk of contamination.

Parking/Secondary Brake. Manual,spring-applied, multiple dry-disc brakeis located on the front driveline forprotection from contamination.Monitoring system alerts operator iftransmission is engaged while parkingbrake is applied; if the pressure drops, theparking brake is automatically applied.

Engine Cooling. New GenerationModular Core Radiator (NGMR)significantly improves heat rejectionthrough the use of copper cooling coresand improved flow characteristics.

Final Drives. The all-wheel-drive designfeatures four planet carrier gears withplanetary double reduction in each wheelfor superior reliability. Planetaries canbe removed independently of the wheelsand brakes for quick and easy servicing.

Robust Structures. The 994F frontloader frame features robust structuralcomponents for outstanding durabilityin the toughest loading conditions.The frame is the backbone of the 994F’sdurability and is specifically designedand manufactured to withstand the higherforces required by the machine’sincreased payload rating.

Frame. The box-section rear frame,articulation hitch and four-plate loadertower are designed to resist torsionalshocks, twisting forces and stressesgenerated during the loading cyclewhile protecting driveline and hydraulicsystem components.

1) Axle Mounting Area. Thicker axlepad castings joined by a box-boomstructure provides added strength andstiffness in the axle mounting area.

2) Pivot Mount Castings. Castings in thelift arm pivot mounting area have beenredesigned to better disperse stressloads for increased structural integrity.

3) Steering Cylinder Mounts. Steeringcylinder mounts are thicker to moreefficiently transmit steering loads intothe frame.

Hitch Plate. The lower articulationhitch plate is larger for greater structuraldurability.

Z-bar Loader Linkage. Proven Z-barloader linkage geometry deliversmaximum productivity. Fewer pivotpoint and moving parts are designedto reduce maintenance costs.

Tilt Links. The pin joints at both endsof the tilt links have been changed to agreased pin design that is connected toan auto lube system. This will increasethe reliability of these joints.

Breakout Force. Increased breakoutforce allows the loader to aggressivelypenetrate the bank.

Rackback. High rackback angle ensuresgreater material retention and lessspillage.

Dump Speed. Controlled dumpingspeed protects the front linkage fromexcessive wear.

Lift Arms. The 994F’s solid steel liftarms absorb high stresses generatedduring loading without sacrificingstrength or durability. The linkagedesign provides an excellent view ofthe bucket edges, corners, and workarea, allowing the operator to focus onproductivity. The cross sectional areaof the lift arms has been increased inseveral areas to improve durability.

1) Lift Arm Cross Member. A heat-treatedlift arm cross member and improvedweld procedures provide greaterreliability and durability.

2) Lift Arm Mounting. Lift arm to frontframe area has been redesigned to permitthe use of a larger pin. The casting inthis area of the front frame has beenoptimized to reduce stresses. The boltedjoint at the lift arm to bucket pin locationhas been removed to improve reliability.

3) Stress-Relieved Lift Arms. Lift armsare stress relieved to eliminate residualstresses created during manufacturingand increase durability.

4) Auto Lube. Bucket to lift arm joint(B-pin) is automatically lubricatedto increase reliability and reducedaily servicing.

Hydraulic System. Completely enclosedhydraulic system uses separate circuitsfor lift and tilt, steering and brakecontrol. Separate circuits provideincreased cooling and elimination ofcross contamination, resulting in lessdowntime and greater productivity.

Lift and Tilt System. Three dedicatedfixed displacement piston pumps and afourth electronically controlled variabledisplacement piston pump deliver highreliability, efficiency and performanceto the lift and tilt system. The variabledisplacement pump is only activatedwhen additional hydraulic speedis needed.

Pilot Controls. Low-effort, pilot-operatedfinger-tip controls provide smooth,precise control of lift and tilt functions.Automatic lift kickout and return todig detents deliver fast cycle times.

Steering System. The 994F features aload-sensing steering system with variabledisplacement piston pump for smooth,precise control. The revolutionarysteering system integrates steering andtransmission control functions into asingle controller. Simple side-to-sidemovement of the STIC steer lever turnsthe machine right or left. Center pointframe articulation allows the machineto articulate 40° to the left or right,permitting precise positioning intight areas.

Filtration System. Advanced filtrationsystem consists of additional screensand filters throughout the lift/tilt, steeringand brake systems to maintain cleanlinessand prevent downstream contamination.All are monitored electronically throughVIMS™ system to simplify diagnostictroubleshooting and reduce downtime.

High Productivity. Aggressive Catbucket designs deliver unmatchedproductivity in the most demandingapplications. 994F buckets have beenredesigned for optimal loadability andstructural reliability.

Rugged Design. Cat buckets aremanufactured using shell-tineconstruction to resist twisting anddistortion. A more aggressive spadeedge increases bucket penetration andfill factors and provides better retentionof loose material. An integral rockguard helps retain big loads for greaterfill factors and optimum truck loading.

Spade Edge Rock Buckets. Spade edgerock buckets with bolt-on segments aredesigned to penetrate through the pilewhile leaving a smooth work floor.Shouldered, double-strap adapters alloweasy change-out, and bolt-on segmentsextend base edge life.

Serrated Edge Coal Bucket.Serrated edge bucket is recommendedfor low abrasion material loadingwhere greater penetration is required.It does not use GET, thus eliminatingthe risk of iron falling into crushers.Replaceable serrated or straight edgeis available if needed. Serrated edgeis standard for the 36 m3 (47 yd3) coalbucket but can be added to the smallerbuckets upon request.

Bucket Protection. Cat Ground EngagingTools (GET) provide superior bucketprotection for long life in the mostpunishing conditions. Built to absorbshock, impact, and abrasion, GETwork and wear as a system to boostproductivity and lower costs.

Tips. Tips extend bucket life in highwear applications.

Sidebar Protectors. Protect bucketcorner and sides from wear in abrasivematerials. Pin-on sidebars are reversibleto extend wear life.

Edge Protectors. Protects bucket edgefrom wear in materials with high wearrates. Independently pinned for easyreplacement without removing tipsor adapters.

Wear Plates. Replaceable wear platesprotect the bucket bottom. Bolt-on andweld-on wear plates protect the rearbase edge from damage.

Spacious Cab Design. The 994F sets thestandard for productivity with advancedcontrols and greater operator comfort.Features include outstanding visibility,excellent cab ventilation, interior soundlevels below 75 dBA, trainer seat, cupholder, storage bin, radio ready andmore. Improvements made for increasedoperator maneuverability and productivity.

Steering and Transmission IntegratedControl System (STIC). Combinesdirectional selection, gear selection andsteering into a single lever for maximumresponsiveness. Simple side-to-sidemotion turns machine right or left.Transmission shifting (forward/neutral/reverse) is controlled by the operator’sfingers, and gear selection is controlledby the thumb. The integrated controlsystem delivers low effort controls forsmoother, faster cycles with lessoperator fatigue.

Left Brake Pedal. Allows the impellerclutch torque converter to modulaterimpull from 100% to 25%. After 25%is achieved, the brakes are engagedfor improved control and smootherdirectional shifts. This improves speedcontrol when approaching the truck.

Cat Comfort Series Seat. With airsuspension and retractable seat belt,the seat is designed for comfort andsupport. Seat cushions reduce pressureon the lower back and thighs whileallowing unrestricted arm and legmovement. The seat is six-way adjustable,and the retractable seat belt remainsoff the floor and is easy to reach forthe operator. Armrests are height andtilt adjustable.

Trainer seat. The trainer seat consistsof a padded seat and back with lap-styleseat belt. When the trainer seat is not inuse, the back can be folded down andused as a drink tray, and there is a storagecompartment (room for a large lunchcooler) under the seat.

Seat Mounted Pilot Hydraulic Controlsand Armrests. Provide low-effort controlfor enhanced comfort and stability.Controls and arm rests are fore, aftand height adjustable to accommodateoperators of any size in a comfortableoperating position. The levers areergonomically designed for improvedoperator comfort.

Vital Information Management System.VIMS™ system is the standard displaysystem that provides information onthe machine’s major components andsystems. Gauge displays fuel tank leveland temperatures for engine coolant,power train and hydraulic oil. Tachometeris an analog gauge with digital readoutfor gear selection. The Payload ControlSystem is included in VIMS system.

Automatic Kickouts. Lift, lower andbucket tilt automatic kickouts areadjustable electronically from the cab.

Throttle Lock. Allows the operatorto preset the engine speed, resultingin faster cycle times and increasedproductivity.

Rimpull Control System. Allowsoperator to match rimpull settings tojob conditions with four-position dial.Operator can adjust maximum rimpullfrom 100% down to 90, 85, 75 and 65%while in first gear. Gauge Cluster. Conveniently locatedgauge cluster maintains a constant displayof vital machine functions, including:

Speedometer/Tachometer Module.Monitors three systems: engine speed,ground speed and actual gear.

VIMS PC software,the off-board reporting software program,allows service personnel to download acomplete record of machine health andproductivity data to a laptop computerfor diagnosis and analysis. Easy-to-usesoftware enables service techniciansand mine management to generatehealth and payload reports for moreeffective machine management.

VIMS Supervisor. On sites with multipleVIMS machines and where VIMS PCsoftware is used to download all data,the use of VIMS Supervisor can aidin quick analysis of VIMS data.VIMS Supervisor can generate Healthand Production report summaries fora single machine or an entire fleet.VIMS Supervisor is the drill downtool for fleet analysis using an existing“VIMS.mdb” database.

Application Match. The standard 994Fis sized to load the 150-ton 785C infour passes. The 994F High Lift and theExtended High Lift load the 195-ton789C in six passes and the 240-ton793C in seven passes. The 994F SuperHigh Lift loads the 195-ton 789C coalbody in six passes and the 240-ton793C coal body in seven passes.

Efficient Combination. For full truckpayloads with minimum loading time,an efficient loading/hauling systemstarts with a perfect match. Cat wheelloaders are matched with Cat C-Seriesmining trucks to maximize volume ofmaterial moved at the lowest operatingcost per ton.

Bucket Selection. Selection of the rightbucket width depends on penetrationrequirements and the loading target.Bucket sizes are matched to truck bedcapacities for optimum loading efficiencyand greater productivity.

Product Safety. Cat has been andcontinues to be proactive in developingmining machines that meet or exceedsafety standards. Safety is an integralpart of all machine and systems designs.

SAE and ISO Standards. The 994F isdesigned to national and internationalstandards. It has been tested andself-certified to comply with applicableSAE and ISO safety standards.

Integral ROPS/FOPS Cab. Mounted tothe main frame to provide rollover andfalling object protection. ROPS structureis designed as an extension of theloader frame.

Ladder/Secondary Egress. Two wide,stationary stairways with handrails onboth sides allow three-point contactaccess to and from the machine.

Brake Systems. Four-corner oil-cooledbraking system provides excellent controlin slippery conditions. The service brakesare actuated by modulated hydraulicpressure, while secondary and parkingbrake functions are spring applied andhydraulic released. This system assuresbraking in the event of completehydraulic failure.

Steering System. A twin double-actingcylinder steering system is designed todeliver precise control under all loadingand underfoot conditions. The steeringhydraulic system is separate from themain hydraulic system to prevent crosscontamination and overheating fromother sources.

Supplemental Steering System.Provided using a ground driven pump isstandard on the 994F. Backup steeringsystem allows the operator to maintaincontrol of the loader in the event of afailure in the main steering system.

Rear Vision Camera (optional). Locatedon top of the radiator in the center.Provides the operator 115° of fieldvision via a colored monitor located inthe cab. Enables operator to see directlybehind the loader.

Trainer Seat. The trainer seat makestraining new operators in the correctoperation of the loader easier. In addition,observing operational issues is easier.

Lock-out Panel. The panel is convenientlylocated on the left-hand side bumper infront of the ladder, allowing the operator/serviceman to reach the switches fromground level. In addition to the shutoffand lockout switches described below,this panel contains a VIMS port, stairwaylights and hood lights switches.

Engine Shutoff Switch. An engineshutoff switch is located in the rearground level lockout panel forimmediate shutdown.

Transmission Lockout. A transmissionlockout switch is located in the rearground level lockout panel. Enableslockout of machine transmission toprevent gear engagement while theoperator is not in the cab.

Starter Lockout. A starter lockoutswitch, when enabled, prevents thestarter from being activated whileservice is being performed.

Toe Kicks. Toe kicks have been addedto the rear platform. Prevents tools fromfalling off while servicing the machine.

Electrical System Disconnect. A batterydisconnect switch, which is convenientlylocated near the left stairs, provideslockout of the electrical system forservice work.

Service Center. Located at ground levelto allow easy access for filling anddraining machine fluid compartments.

Payload Policy. Safety is integral tomaintaining the highest productivityin mining machine operation. The Cat10/10 Payload Policy assures thatsteering and braking systems havesufficient capacity to perform at a10% overload. VIMS, which is standardon the 994F, includes a payload indicatorsystem. VIMS notifies the operatorwhen the bucket is overloaded.

The following table provides a guideline for bucket selection based on various material densities and estimated fill factors.Based on the new ratings, fill factors are expected to be 110-120% in cohesive materials with easy digging, 100-110% intypical shot rock loading, and 90-100% in poorly shot rock with large rocks and difficult penetration. For many miningapplications, the 994F standard lift is matched with the 19 m3 (24.5 yd3) rock bucket and the high lift is matched with the17 m3 (22.5 yd3) rock bucket.

Changes in bucket weight, including field installedwear iron, can impact rated payload. Consult yourCaterpillar dealer for assistance in selecting andconfiguring the proper bucket for the application.The Caterpillar Large Wheel Loader Payload Policyis a guideline intended to maximize wheel loaderstructural and component life.
