ABCʼs study tour to Storrington....Highlights of best practice

The keys issues for us to learn about:

– Partnership structure and experiences– From aspiration to delivery of a significant Street Scene project– Making a case for and operating a community facility

Major benefits:– Were able to talk to a moreadvanced group than us with relevantexpertise. Built a Town to Town link.

– Strengthened our team and builtbridge between ABC and Parishesparticularly. Later transformedhighways relationship

– Gave us all confidence with our nextsteps to form Partnership, bid forStreet Scheme improvement andconsider longer term Community Hubproject.



What did we do next?....Highlights of best practice

– Linked up with Leatherhead partnership, to create companyfor Caterham - with best of Storrington, Leatherhead andourselves. Three of the Study tour team as directors. Resolvedsome representation issues for Parishes.– Have finalised a SEEDA bid, with Excellent cooperation fromcounty, district and parishes, plus businesses and residents

– Applauded our Festival team for launching the first ever TownFestival over 6 weeks. 84 events and thousands of people.

– Launching a “Shop Smart” local card, with 30 shops, a Townportal site and fingers crossed 3,000 + members.

– Upgrading the 3rd Business meet Business event fromCaterham to District in Autumn, with District involvement >100businesses expected to be involved.

It's morale boosting to have new friends who have recognised theproblems we have confronted and are deriving their own approaches.Nigel Wilkinson. What a good exercise. Informative, clarifying and educational - that wasonly the bus trip!It seemed that they'd suffered similar problems to ourselves, overcoming much to becometaken seriously. Becoming a registered charity had also helped. Having a close relationshipwith the Parish Council was a clear winner, to speak with one voice. In our case, two PC's.Pamela Cosgrove. The Community Hub was of great value - it was pleasing to see howmany different people and areas it was helping.Joined up Parish Councils. Two village parishcouncils had become one enabling a cohesive body to take the healthcheck forward andunite the future of Storrington and it's hinterlands.Also impressed with pavements, street lights, furniture and lack of railings. A great visualimpact without all the clutter. Also felt good value and noted strong links with countyhighways.Jean Pidgeon. Parish Councillor. I was so good to see what can be achieved whendetermined people work in partnership. I was very impressed with the Community Hub and its social inclusion agenda delivering such a wide range of services for people of every age.Everything rang true with me .
