1
CABLE IDENTIFICATION There are four basic parts
of a cables composition: The Sheath Shield Conductors Insulation of Cable Pairs.

CABLE IDENTIFICATION CONT’D
• 25L’s use the information that is marked on the cable sheath to determine:
• Type of cable• Gauge of the conductors• Number of pairs• On some cables the length measurement

CABLE IDENTIFICATION CONT’D
PIC: Plastic insulated cables are cables that have plastic or polyethylene insulation over the conductors. The most widely used type of cable.
8
PIC CABLE
9
CABLE IDENTIFICATION CONT’D
CAT 5/6 Used in LAN/WAN (Local Area Network/Wide Area
Network) Designed for high speed data.Conductor pairs are twisted together in a regular spiral pattern. Limited to 100 meters for high speed data and should produce 100MHz (bandwidth) capabilities.

UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair are cables that have no metal shield. UTP is used indoors and comes in a variety of sizes.

What are the four parts of a cables Composition? Answer: Sheath; Shield; Conductors;
Insulation of cable pairs
What type of material is used to insulatethe conductors on PIC cables?
Answer: Plastic/Polyethylene

CABLE PAIR IDENTIFICATION AND THE COLOR CODE
14
CABLE PAIR IDENTIFICATION
THREE CONSIDERATIONS
Geometric pattern of the cable
Color code of the individual conductors
Color units, subunits, or super units.
15
GEOMETRIC PATTERN OF THE CABLE
Cable conductors arranged in concentric pattern.
The center group, regardless of size, is always the start of the cable count.
Cables are arranged clockwise, starting with the center.
16
COLOR CODE OF THE INDIVIDUAL CONDUCTORS
Ten colors are used to identify the conductors.
The binder code uses the same ten colors to identify color units, subunits, and super units.
17
COLOR UNITS, SUBUNITS, OR SUPERUNITS.
A unit consists of 25 pairs of conductors.
A subunit is a 25-pair (unit) broken down into one 12-pair group and one 13-pair group, or 8,8,9 pair group, less than 25.
The super units consist of two or more units.
