CATECHIST FORMATION PROGRAM 2018
“We are being asked not to tire of keeping the key message of the faith
front and centre: the Lord is risen. Nothing is more important; nothing is clearer or more relevant than this”
Pope Francis message to Catechists
Being a catechist is not a title; it is an attitude of abiding with him, and it lasts a lifetime! It
means abiding in the Lord’s presence and letting ourselves be led by him.
Pope Francis message to Catechists
Formation seeks to enable Catechists to transmit the Gospel to those who desire to
entrust themselves to Jesus Christ.

CATECHIST FORMATION PROGRAM 2018 1
FOREWORD
To ‘be’ catechists ... is something that embraces our whole life. It means
leading people to encounter Christ by our words and our lives.
Pope Francis
I am pleased to present the Catechist Formation Program for 2018. May it support the love that draws you to this ministry with practical tools and help to nurture your own journey of faith.
If you are new to this ministry I particularly urge you to complete the Initial Formation Course so that you can gain the knowledge and skills to share your faith confidently with the children of your parish. The course will enable you to become a Commissioned Catechist.
Even if you are an experienced Catechist, your work and your faith will be stimulated by new learning and experiences. I know that Coordinators and Parish Priests will encourage your learning and personal formation. It will be a pleasure to welcome you to courses and events throughout this coming year. Please note that Catechist Service courses can be used towards:
ongoing renewal of accreditation to work and teach in Catholic schools; and
accreditation to teach Scripture in Government schools.
If this is significant for you, please contact us for more details.
OF SPECIAL INTEREST FOR 2018
The new Catechist Program will continue to be released in year levels and the complete program will be made available to you in 2018. You will find details of program inservices enclosed.
Parish visits will be made by members of the Catechist Service throughout 2018, and will be scheduled at times that are convenient for your catechist team. We hope to visit all the parishes throughout the year and use the opportunity to connect with you and your work.
A Conference for Catechists will be held in early August. As it is some years since our last conference, we are very excited about offering this event and looking forward to your participation. You will find details on page 29.
For your convenience, included in this book is a personal diary and planner.
Please contact me or members of the team if you have queries, issues or concerns about any aspect of your work as a Catechist. We are available to provide consultation and assistance as required.
The team and I are privileged to be able to support your catechetical ministry. We wish you every blessing for 2018.

ADVENT TWILIGHT REFLECTION
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and
the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
Isaiah 60:1
As we approach Advent, we pause to review the year that has been and ponder the one to come through the eyes and mind of our loving God.
Where has God’s invisible glory bathed and sustained our life this year? Where is the new light of the Christ child rising for us and for the world?
Like all who were called to Bethlehem to see the glory of God born amongst them, let our hearts be drawn, expectant, unafraid and honoured to welcome a new coming of God into our life.
