The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) St. Monicas Parish September 28/29, 2013

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY: GOD CONSIDERS US TRUSTWORTHY!

In a letter addressed to each of the 2000-plus catechists throughout the diocese, our Archbishop

Christian Lpine reaffirms the importance of their commitment: "Your involvement in this ministry wil

allow children, teenagers, adults, and families to discover Jesus; to experience the love of God as

Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit; to share with them the Word of God; and to pray and live asChristians in the world." Our annual celebration of Catechetical Sunday promotes this sense of

solidarity among all those who share in the task of transmitting the faith to a new generation: pastors,

parish catechetical leaders, youth ministers, volunteer catechists, and all those who are involved in

this ministry or who support it through their time, talent, and treasure.

Many of us were powerfully moved last weekend by the joy-filled retreat offered to our parish by

Franciscan friar Guylain Prince. We are being challenged at this time to embrace the challenge of the

New Evangelization, defined as our efforts to awaken or reawaken a personal, living, and

mutual relationship with the God of Jesus Christ. The message of Jesus does not change: He is

the same yesterday, today, and forever. And yet, we are called to a new evangelization new in itsfervour, new in its methods, new in its strategies. New because, as Fr. Guylain stressed so strongly

the context is new: in our secularized, post-Christian Western societies, there will soon be no such

thing as a merely cultural Catholicism, a captive audience of young people to be processed through

sacramental initiation. Faith will beindeed, can only bea personal commitment to live as a follower

of Jesus, and to belong to the community of his disciples. If those who transmit the faith parents

teachers, catechists, pastors are not themselves witnesses, the message will fall on deaf ears.

This is a challenge to all of us. When parents bring their children to be baptized, the first question

they are asked (after the childs name) is whether they accept the responsibility of raising that child in

the ways of faith: by keeping Jesus commandments of love of God and neighbour, by praying withthem and guiding their moral development, by being themselves models and witnesses of Catholic

faith and life. Parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith. They do so best by

walking the talk: by showing them by example the importance of prayer, worship, service, and love.

We are grateful for all who exercise this special and irreplaceable ministry of Christian parenting.

Please know that as fellow members of your parish, we are here to support you in your faith

development, so that together, we can joyfully share this most precious gift of faith in Jesus Christ

    with a new generation.

Video Divina: Fr. Raymond will present Joshua, the first movie of his Meeting Jesus at the

Movies film series, on Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. in the parish rectory. Admission and popcorn arefree, and stimulating discussion will follow the movie! All are welcome!
