Pressure Vessel Code Updates

PD 5500:

This code was originally published in 1976 as BS 5500 The main formulae for the pressure envelope have remained static Enhancements have been introduced over the years Is used as the basis (for some of the features) for EN 13445 Part 3 It very nearly complies with the PED (Pressure Equipment Directive)

PD 5500 Changes in PV Elite 2013

Updated to the 2012 edition of PD 5500

For example:

Minor change to the flat head calculation for Category 3 – used Category 1/2 allowable stresses

3/26/2013 4

Pressure Vessel Code Updates

TEMA (Tubular Exchange Manufacturer’s Association):

Updated to the 9th Edition (2007)

Changes in the 9th edition:

The tubesheet calculation remains virtually the same The analysis of expansions joints has been removed

The previous method was too conservative TEMA recommends FEA be used instead However PV Elite has the previous analysis An FEA programme is available from Paulin Research Group

Reminder:

Cannot use TEMA for ASME Coded vessels !

API Fitness for Service

This is completely new in PV Elite At the moment we have encorporated the 2007 edition

Limited to Levels 1 and 2, but we are working on it

3/26/2013 6

Pressure Vessel Code Updates

Really new: We have started enhancing PV Elite with languages

English – formerly the only available language Spanish Italian Portuguese French

This is an example of the French Language

There is also an updated AS/NZ 2011 Wind Code

Validation of PV Elite

ASME has produced a book of sample calculations ASME PTB-3

We have used that book to benchmark PV Elite where we can

We used a different programme such as MathCad as alternative software

Here is a sample page from that book

This is the new look with the Ribbon

All the same icons are there, but are set out differently

The user interface has been radically changed

3/26/2013 42

We now look at CodeCalc

The old Shell/Heads user inter face used to look like this:

Now it looks like this:

Getting Output (the calculations ) is made easier

Need only click the <F12> key to get the output processor

You can get the output processor from the previous run

Do not need these buttons as you have the tabs

We have not shown all the features, but you get the idea

Remember, CodeCalc only does ASME VIII, Division 1

The Advantages of using PV Elite

They are considerable:

You can analyse a vessel with any of four codes ASME Section VIII, Division 1 ASME Section VIII, Division 2 PD 5500 – The British code EN 13445 – European code

Includes the European PED You can build the whole vessel with every component It easier than CodeCalc building a heat exchanger You have a choice of numerous wind codes You have a choice of numerous seismic codes You can see a scale model on your screen You can use PV Elite building only one component

There is another big advantage using PV Elite over other software

3/26/2013 52

The Advantages of using PV Elite

Using Code Case 2695 for Division 1 vessels

This code case enable you to use Division 2 technology to design Division 1 vessels - Can still be U-1 stamped

There are two areas where this is advantageous:

Can design thinner heads Ellipsoidal heads Torispherical heads

Nozzle design May be able to use thinner re-pads May need less nozzle reinforcement

The fabricator can bid on a lighter cheaper vessel Less welding (thinner plate) Cheaper to transport

This code case is worth looking at

The Evolution of ASME VIII, Division 1

The steamship Sultana exploded returning soldiers from the war

Most of the soldiers were killed on that voyage up the Mississippi

Tragedies were not rare

Again there was huge loss of life

Amazing, the stack is still standing

3/26/2013 56

The Evolution of ASME VIII, Division 1

Here is yet another boiler explosion

This occurred in Hampshire England

The problem had to be solved – loss of life could not be tolerated

The Evolution of ASME VIII, Division 1

Early 1900’s American Society of Mechanical Engineers was approached

In 1915 they produced ASME Section 1 – Power boiler code

It had precise Rules for the design of boilers

In 1925 they produced ASME Section VIII – Pressure vessel code

Again – the key was: Rules for the design of Pressure Vessels

In 1968 they divided Section VIII into two codes

VIII Division 1 – still containing the Rules VIII Division 2:

Allowing for design by Rule, or, Design by stress analysis

In 2007 Division 2 was completely re-written from scratch

Section 4 – Design by rule Section 5 - Design by analysis

3/26/2013 58

ASME VIII, Division 1 still the most popular code

In the early days – there were no computers or calculators. Engineers only had slide rules.

Consider a formula for an Ellipsoidal Head thickness from Division 1

Now the analysis for a head from Division 2
