Catch Me If You Can Opening Title Sequence

Further AnalysisBy Daniel Bruce

TypefaceIn terms of the typeface it is hard to truly say what the recurring theme is, however what is noticeable is that its extremely 2D and revolves a lot around the use of lines which stretch through the whole screen, this could imply an almost race track look or the factor of being far ahead, hence the film title ‘Catch Me If You Can’, the fact that a line is always moving away and off the screen also shows the audience that perhaps the film is very fast paced and continuous.3

The typeface of Catch Me If You Cans opening sequence could also be implied to be setting the scene, as you can see below Leonardo DiCaprio’s name is formed as a departure board, this could imply that the films running away nature ventures in to another country, in a thrilling pursuit of crime.

Fonts/Colours The font and colours used suggest a very formal film using black is also a

connotation of suits and business which coincidentally is a recurring theme in the opening title sequence of Catch Me If You Can. The font used is also a very bland and basic film, however because of the way its set out with lines streaming off it, it creates an effect of anticipation and unknowing as you will never knows where the lines will flow the same way that you don't know which path the film will go down.

Also there isn't a great deal of colours suggesting that the film could be a dark and serious film, clearly one that doesn't match the comedy genre. All of the cars below are grey and plain except from the stereotypical yellow cab, highlighting that the film is originally based in America.

Positioning of Text In terms of the positioning of the text in the opening title sequence to

Catch Me If You Can, the positioning of the text remains very central, this technique is used in most films as the eye will immediately focus on what's going on in the middle of the screen, however there is a part, when the main title begins to move, the me glides away with the aeroplane suggesting to the audience that the plot contains and revolves around a chase throughout the entire film, a common convention of a classic thriller film.

Movement of Fonts In terms of the movement of fonts in the opening title sequence of

Catch Me If You Can, the fonts themselves don't really change from cut to cut, however they do move to fit in to the specific scenario they fit in. For example in the screen shot below it shows a couple in a lift and so as the lift moves down so does the correlating text, this creates an effect of always being on the move, coincidentally matching the title of the film ‘Catch Me If You Can’ , when everything in the film is changing, matching the thriller genre.
