Impressive Labor Force GrowthI might be the only person in the country to hyperventilate when I see our unemployment rate has dropped to 1.7%. While this is fantastic news for job seekers and the overall employment situation, to me it means there are only 296 receiving unemployment while more than 2,000 job titles advertised.

The total number of people in our local labor force has recovered to pre-pandemic status, matching 2019's levels. Which means we have the most people we’ve seen in our labor force since 2013.

The US Census numbers reveal Columbus and Platte County are growing. Columbus’ population grew 8.7% in ten years to 24,028, making it one of the fastest growing rural cities in Nebraska. Platte County grew 6.4% to 32,296 people.

This news is a huge win for us, but there is still so much work to be done. I am encouraged by reports of large numbers of people across the country who are looking for a better job and a better life. These people are

seeking a better work / life balance, safer communities, and better schools. These are all things we offer. Short commute times, outstanding healthcare, low utility costs, and abundant groundwater. The very things we enjoy and take for granted are the amenities today’s workforce are seeking.

Help me deliver the message of opportunity and outstanding quality of life. Together, we are an army of influence and information. Let’s all work together to tell the country our story. “We have what you’re looking for!”
