The CZ 550 is a Mauser type action.The Mauser 98 action established itself asa viable alternative to the double rie due to itsreliable feeding and function over 100 yearsago.

| A - Square bridge receiver with 19mmDovetail. The integrated scope base of the CZries eliminates potential points of failure inthe bases and screws. It also eliminates possi-ble alignment issues that incorrectly machinedbases can cause.

| B - The CZ Single Set Trigger system allowsfor both a standard hunting trigger and a lighttarget trigger in the same rie. By operatingthe rie in the same manner as any otherbolt-action rie, the trigger is in the standard

The double vs. bolt argument will live aroundcampres as long as dangerous game ishunted.

The double is typically shorter than a boltaction rie. This gives it a couple of advan-tages. The balance and handling is excellentmaking for lightning fast rst shots.

Because the overall length is shorter, is alsohandier to maneuver with in tight spaces. Themost exhilarating place in the world may alsobring out or deepest fears. At times this placehas been the thick brush or the tall grass aftersomething went wrong. There is a reassuringfeel to a double when tracking a woundedbuffalo or lion into those tight spaces.

When comparing a double (with ejectors) toa bolt gun that holds three rounds, the doublewill usually be faster with the rst shot becau-se of superior handling, always faster with thesecond and because it has the advantage of aquicker reload, is faster when four shots areneeded as well. The bolt gun only beats it withthe third shot.

The stock and fore-end are made fromwalnut selected for high wood density.Fine checkering and scrollwork is laserengraved in the stock after shaping andsanding. Perceived recoil is greatly reducedby the classic ventilated recoil pad.

Dangerous Game Cartridges of the Safari Classics line

The 9.3x62 Mauser was introduced in 1905by Otto Bock of Berlin as a powerful cartridgethat t in a standard length Mauser action. Asit was never adopted as a military cartridge,there were no restrictions on it for civilianuse and it became very popular with African

farmers and hunters. While it had somesuccess in Europe, the 9.3x62 enjoyed popula-rity in Africa similar to the 30-06 in the US. Inseveral African countries, it is the exception tothe .375 minimum for dangerous game. 285grains at 2400 fps.

The .375 H&H was introduced in 1912 asthe .375 Belted Rimless Nitro-Express byHolland and Holland. Its interesting to notethat it was only the second belted cartridgeever, the rst being the 400/375 Belted NitroExpress, also by Holland and Holland. Today itis still an extremely popular choice of hunters,

and is considered by many to be the mostversatile hunting cartridge ever. Flat shootingfor longer shots on plains game and powerfulenough for fast and furious encounters withdangerous game, the .375 H&H is an excellentchoice for varied terrain and mixed bag hunts.Most African countries use the .375 H&H asthe minimum cartridge for dangerous game,and in a 10 lb package like the Safari ClassicsMagnum Express Rie, the recoil is virtuallynot an issue. 270 grains at 2700 fps.

The .404 Jeffery was introduced in 1909by Jeffery of England to duplicate .450/400(3 ) performance in a cartridge designed forbolt action ries. The .404 has earned itsplace among the top safari cartridges. It hasbeen the parent case for several other designs

including the Remington Ultra Magnums.The .404 drives a 400 grain bullet at a muzzlevelocity of 2170 fps.

The .425 Westley Richards was developedin 1909 in England. Known as the poor mansmagnum, the rebated rim cartridge wasdesigned to pack the power necessary fordangerous game into a standard length (Mau-ser 98) action. 400 grains at 2400 fps.

The .458 Win Mag was introduced in 1956.Despite some shortcomings, the price andavailability of ammo and ries have made it

arguably the most popular chambering forstopping ries. In 1971 Jack Lott improvedon the .458 Win Mag making it .3 longer.This accomplished a couple of things. Withthe powders available at the time, the .458Win Mag had become the victim of either areal or perceived reliability issue concerningcompressed charges and the inconsistentburn resulting in complaints about squibloads. (now a non issue with more recentlyintroduced powders) The Lott added extra

case volume eliminating the need for the com-pressed charge. At the same time it also added300 fps to the 500 gr bullet bringing it up to2400 fps. For a long time, .458 Lott ammowas a wildcat proposition. It took 31 years,but in 2002 Hornady began loading it, and was

soon followed by others. Today the Lott maybe the most logical choice for a dangerousgame cartridge in a bolt action gun. Highenergy, magazine capacity, and maybe mostimportantly, it can digest the .458 Win Mag(available in just about every hunting camp inthe world) should you get separated from yourammo in transit are all strong arguments infavor of Jack Lotts cartridge.

The .416 Rigby evokes the romance of theAfrican safari like no other with the possibleexception of the .375 Holland and Holland.Introduced in 1911, it was the rst cartridge to

use a .416 bullet. Sending a 400 gr bullet outat 2300 fps, the .416 Rigby gets high marksin any comparison of stopping rounds. Whileits truly impressive dimensions demand a truemagnum action, it is interesting to note thatperhaps the most famous .416 rie, that of PHHarry Selby was built on a standard Mauseraction. The .416 Remington, .416 Taylor, andthe new .416 Ruger(based on the recent .375Ruger that duplicates .375 H&H performancein a small package) produce similar ballisticsto the Rigby, but they deliver with smallercartridges at the cost of higher pressure. Thesmaller .416 cartridges do bring the benet

of slightly lower recoil and higher magazinecapacity given the same magnum sized action,or the possibility of a lighter weight rie in thestandard size action

The .450 Rigby is based on the classic.416 Rigby case. While it is has only beenaround since 1995, this cartridgehas gained a reputation in many circles asbeing the most effective dangerous gamestopping cartridge for standard magnum sized

actions. The 465 grain bullet delivers over2300 fps at the muzzle.

The .505 Gibbs was developed as a proprie-tary cartridge for use in the Magnum Mauserbolt action ries by George Gibbs around1910. It remains the largest commerciallyproduced cartridge that can t in the MagnumMauser type actions like the CZ 550 SafariMagnum.The bullet weight is 525 grains and it leavesthe muzzle at 2300 fps.

The .500 Jeffery is a rebated rim cartridge

developed by the German company Shulerin 1928 for use in Mauser ries. While therehas been considerable confusion and multiplestandards on the design, the CZ ries andammunition are built according to the mostrecent (1998) CIP specication. Pushing a535 grain bullet at 2300 fps, the .500 Jefferydelivers truly impressive stopping power. Instandard factory ammo, the .500 Jeffery is themost powerful cartridge in the Safari Classicsline with the larger .505 Gibbs right on itsheels.
