After completing his engineering apprenticeship, Richard Paver emigratedto the Eastern Cape in 1843. He worked on the watermills at Sidbury andGlenthorn before entering into an agreement with Sir Andries Stockenstromto erect a mill at Maasstroom. His reminiscences, written about forty yearslater, deal largely with his experiences during the Frontier wars which ensued.In 1846 he was a member of the burgher force which, under Stockenstrom’scommand, cleared the Amatolas before striking out across the Kei River.After war had broken out again at the end of 1850, he and his brotherHenry remained at Maasstrom, attempting to defend the position until itwas destroyed by fire eight months later. Paver’s reminiscences provide vividinsight into a little–known and contentious phase in the history of the EasternCape frontier.

The letter again concerns the debts of the Moodies, which maybe finally resolved with a pending action against Lord Dundas for return ofover–payments made by James Moodie for Superior Duties from the Estateof Melsetter prior to sale of said estate.
