FOREWORD.A LARGE number of pieces in this collection have become darkened on
** one side— a few on both obverse and reverse— from long exposure.
Some slightly, others more pronouncedly, but none, I believe, positively bad or
irreclaimable. With these remarks prefaced, the condition is given without
further reference to this particular.
Those which are stated to be holed have this blemish near the edge, and
above the head, unless otherwise mentioned. In Spanish-American countries
it has for a long time been a common custom to use such pieces as watch
charms and pendants, and among the Indians to wear them about the neck.
These with many pieces of the regular coinages were thus bored at the time
they were taken from the mints.
The cast pieces— sometimes as rendered, others tooled, partially or en-
tire— are original, and do not exist otherwise.
Only a slight attempt has been made to represent the varied punctuations
in the legends. They cannot be reproduced in type, and the same may be
stated about monograms and N-s with diagonals reversed.
Throughout the series of Medals, all are in silver unless otherwise
stated.
The gentleman who drew together this important Collection, almost solely
relating to Spain, is to be commended for his splendid achievements and his
enthusiastic love of the science of numismatics. It is doubtless the most im-
portant of the class that has ever been offered for sale in the United States,
either publicly or privately.
The collection of Mr. Benjamin Betts, dispersed by myself in 1898— of
which frequent mention is made in this catalogue— contained 221 Spanish-
American Proclamation pieces. It was the monumental effort in Western
World collecting. The present offering has just ten less, but the whole num-
ber of Proclamations is 382.
“ Contemporary Medals,” by the late Wyllys Betts, included a large number
of these interesting pieces, but it has been thought best to confine references to
Herrera’s work and the Betts catalogue, both of which I judge are within the
reach of collectors interested in the series.
While the values are given as quoted by Herrera, it is to be remembered
that his work was based on opinions of 25 years ago. These must now neces-
sarily be changed, if we are to be guided by the marked differences in trans-
actions that are prevailing. Very few if any series are less thought of, or cared
for, while the great majority have largely increased in price.
The Museums and prominent collections elsewhere, have gradually gathered
them in. The supply cannot be increased;therefore the opportunities to pos-
sess are annually diminished.
Part Two which is to follow in September, will contain the series of An-
cient Rome, Celtiberian, Medieval and Modern Silver coins below the Dollar
size, Medals, etc., including about 70 lots of gold.
Authorities quoted : H., Adolfo Herrara on Spanish Proclamation Medals,
Madrid, 1882-84; B. C., Cat. of the Collection of Benjamin Betts, Brooklyn,
N. Y., dispersed by auction in January, 1898.
