CATALOGUE OF KNOWN SPECIES OF ACARI FROM THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS (ECUADOR, PACIFIC OCEAN)

Heinrich Schatz Zoological Institute, University of lnnsbruck, Technikerstr. 25, A 6020 Innsbruck, Austria

ABSTRACT - A catalogue of Acari known from the Galapagos Islands is presented. Only 89 species and subspecies belonging to 14 families have been reported until now. Bibliography, general distribution, and distribution on the islands is given for each species. The hosts are included for the parasitic species.

INTRODUCTION

The Galapagos islands in the Pacific ocean are situated on the equator about 1000 km west of the South American coast. They consist of 18 islands and numerous islets and rocks covering a land surface of about 8000 km. 2 Their origin is volcanic, their age less than 4 million years. Although situated on the equator, the climate is not tropical because of cool oceanic cur- rents and resulting arid conditions (Perry, 1984; Schatz & Schatz, 1988/89).

This catalogue reflects the present stage of Acarological studies in the Galapagos Islands. General- ly, the fauna of the Galapagos Islands is well known for its uniqueness. But compared with larger invertebrates the minute mites attracted attention relatively late. The levels of investigation are far from equal for the different groups. Nearly every collection in Galapagos includes species new for the islands and among them many new for science.

Until now only 88 species of Acari belonging to 14 families have been reported from the Galapagos Islands. About half of these belong to the family Halacaridae studied by I. Bartsch. The majority of the mite species occurring in Galapagos are completely unknown. Only the parasitic Ixodida have been thoroughly investigated; the families Phytoseiidae and the Halacaridae are known in some detail. The knowledge of soil living mites is particularly poor. From the vast number of species belonging to this group only 16 species reported from the islands were found in the literature. In the course of a recent soil zoological project (Schatz & Schatz, 1988/89) several collections from soils of the Galapagos Islands will be evaluated.

Especially from the large order Oribatida only two species have been described up to now. But more than 125 species were recognized by the author; many of. them are new to science and awaiting description. Ad- ditionally, several more soil riving species of the orders Gamasida, Actinedida and Astigmata were found but not determined, among them include at least 20 more species of Uropodina (Hirschmann, in litt) as well as a new genus of Caeculidae (Coineau, in litt.). These groups shall be presented separately in a sequel to this catalogue.

The zoogeographical evaluation of the Galapagos mite fauna is impeded by a lack of knowledge about the acarofauna of the adjoining areas. Only few data are available from the possible source areas, Central and South America as well as the Pacific region, which ex- plains the high proportion of species described only from Galapagos (63 out of 88 known species). Such a high degree of endemism is very improbable in the acarofauna of a young volcanic archipelago like Galapagos although some species of Acari seem to show striking examples of speciation (Schatz, 1991).

The author would like to express his gratitude to Dr. I. Bartsch, Hamburg, Germany (Halacaridae); Dr. E. Ebermann, Graz, Austria (Scutacaridae); Dr. W. Hirschmann, Fiirth, Germany (Uropodina); and Dr. J.E. Keirans, Bethseda, Maryland, U.S.A. (Ixodida) for critical reading and corrections of the respective parts of this catalogue.

The classification and arrangement follows the concept proposed by Krantz (1978) and recently revised by Woolley (1988). The official spanish names are used for the islands of Galapagos.
