W e invite you to discover all the m aterials available andm eeting all the requirem ents for our solutions A rval byA rcelorM ittal Construction. Since architecture hasbecom e a new language and a brand im age,w hich goes farbeyond sim ple functionalneeds, yourrequestsforadvice areforeverincreasing.

Throught this guide, our aim is to help you to select them aterial best suited to your project. In order to m akeeffective use ofthisdocum entand choose the system w hichm eets your requirem ents,w e suggest you use it togetherw ith the Colorissim e by A rcelorM ittalbecause not onlyare technical properties essential but also the choice ofcolourand appearance.

Allthe architects w ho tasted it say that to build w ith steel,is to rediscover the trade of architect, to rediscover thecreation. "Answ ers"given by steelin the new requirem entofsustainability do nothave difficulty to convince since theyare adapted and allow a strong signature ofthe w orks.

A rcelorM ittalConstruction is the leader in transform ingcoated steeland as such, has contributed to this evolution. How ?By offering you,in yourcapacity asdesigners, new products, com pletely new applications using traditional m aterials, and, above all,the certainty of a strong im age, innovativeaesthetics and daring architectural designs. And becausew e are yourpartnerstanding beside you and ready to listento you, you can rely on the Arvalexpertise and technicalservices.

G eneralinform ationThe cladding elem entsare m anufactured from coilsofcoatedsteel or stainless steel. The sheet is uncoiled, flattenedand sheared lengthw ise. Then, it is cold processed on aroll- form ing, panelor bending line. The elem ents are thenstacked and packaged atthe end ofthe m anufacturing line.

The adhesion of the zinc to the base m etal (iron- zinccom bination) occurs during the continuous galvanizationprocess and guarantees increased resistance to corrosion, and so does the cathode protection provided by the zinc.Iron- zinc cathode protection checks the spread of rust onthe sheared edges orin the fixing holes via a transferofzincby electrolysis. An im portantfeature ofm etallic coated steelon a continuous process is that it is rust- resisting, not onlyon the zinc coated sides but also w hen cut.In use of nonprepainted galvanised steelshould there be any efflorescent(w hite rust) caused by a deposit of hydrated zinc oxide, zinc hydro carbonate or zinc oxychloride, it w illnot alterthe m echanicalproperties ofthe profiles steelsheeting.Thegalvanised steelsheetsare passivated in a chrom ium VI- freechem icalsolution in orderto resistagainstw hite rustduringthe transportand the storage.D epending the m anufacturing,a w hitening discoloration could occurs. This phenom enondoesnotm odify the propertiesofthe m aterial. In prepaintedsteel,sm allscratches are protected by zinc.Even though w erecom m end to retouch w ith an appropriated paint.

Highly elaborated techniquesare used to m anufacture A rvalby A rcelorM ittalC onstruction pre- painted steel,w hichhave solved m any painting problem s, thus giving a highperform ance product. The sheets are industrially m anufactured under rigorouscontrols,w hich gives such a good technicalquality to A rvalby A rcelorM ittalConstruction precoated steelthatitcanbe used in a very w ide range ofsectors:

> industrialbuildings> office buildings> tertiary sector> storage buildings> goods and equipm entbuildings> etc...

Allour m anufacturing processes w ere conceived in respectof the environm ent. Rejections resulting from the surfacetreatm ent are treated in accordance w ith the m ost strictEuropean regulations.G as rejections resulting from the pre-painting lines are treated by incineration. Perform ances ofunpollution installations are supervised daily. ArcelorM ittalConstruction production isdone by respecting obviously theenvironm ent. The respect of the sustainability is certainlyone of the success keyfactors for the pre- painted steel. In accordance w ith the NF P 01- 010 standard,Health andEnvironm entalstatem ent form s are available, one request, forthe follow ing coated steelproducts:

Steelm echanicalpropertiesThe steel is hot dip coated w ith a m etal alloy on thecontinuous line and follow s the NF EN 10346 standard.W ehave selected the m ost appropriate steelgrade, bearing inm ind the use intended forthe products.

Excellent corrosion resistance is obtained by spreading thecoating overthe surface ofthe steelsubstrate.

Stainless steelis a steelw hich contains at least 10,5% ofchrom ium , less than 1,2 % of carbon, as w ellas alloyingelem ents. Its corrosion resistance is an intrinsic property obtained bythe reaction betw een chrom ium and oxygen, thus creating avery fine self- protecting passive layer.

The surface can be changed by applying m echanicaltreatm entorby hotdip surface tinning.

These m aterials com e underthe NF EN 10088 standard.

Surface preparationAn im portantphase is the preparation. The objective ofthisis to m ake sure the substrate has a clean surface as thiscontributes to paint adhesion w hen perform ing rem edialpainting.M ain procedures in surface treatm ent:

> D egreasing: clean w ith pum p pressure hot w ater(HP- 70°C) using non- abrasive detergent (or cleanby hand, butthisislessefficient),then rinse w ith hotw ater(pum p HP- 70°C) and dry.

> Phosphate treatm ent: chem ical cleaning (10% ofphosphoric acid).

> Tw o effects: the pickling effect,w hich contributesto the adhesion of the anti- rust prim er, and thephosphate effect (form ation of a protective layerof phosphate and insoluble iron betw een thephosphoric acid and the ruston the substrate.Rinsew ith hotw ater(pum p HP- 70°C) and dry.

> M echanicalpickling: low pressure sand blasting,to

rem ove any loose particles (rust,paint...) from thegalvanised steel. This process rem oves w hite rust.Itis also possible to:> clean rusty parts and rusty edges by chipping,

scraping and hand orm echanicalbrushing.> scour (chem ically or m echanically) the shiny

areas ofthe galvanised orprepainted sheet.> Then rem ove the dust (com pressed air, sw eeping,

w iping)

System of repairG enerally speaking, this system involves applying a prim ercoatand a top coat.
