Lande 461. T.P.L. 1974, Sabin 33826, WilliamAlexander (1567?- (1640), a British poet born in Scotland, was a tutor to Prince Henry of Scotland and was invited toEngland on the invitation of James I of England, upon thelatter's accession to the English throne. In 1621, he wasgranted tracts of land in Nova Scotia ("New Scotland") andhis holdings in America were increased substantiallythrough a grant by Charles I of land encompassing a majorpart of what in now the northeastern portion of the UnitedStates. He became Viscount Stirling in 1630 and Earl ofStirling in 1633. The titles lapsed in 1739 when the last earldied without issue, and the tracts of land had been ceded toFrance. William Alexander, Revolutionary War hero, andself-styled Earl of Stirling, asserted his claim to the title of

"Sixth Earl of Stirling"; although the claim was never upheldby the House of Lords, he was in fact referred to as LordStirling throughout his life. The subject of the present work, grandson of the latter William Alexander through his mother, again lays claim to the earldom, and here presents manycharters and affidavits relating to his family's punative NovaScotia claims.

Preston's first impressions were gained under unfortunatecircumstances. He arrived at Quebec in February 1827, wasin Montreal during the riot that precipitated the rebellion inthat province, and reached Kingston during the height of theexcitement over the outbreak in Toronto under WilliamLyon Mackenzie. For the rest of his stay he was employed inToronto. His bias appears in his criticism of the ‘stagnant'British colonies as compared to the vigorous life of theUnited States, while the emergence of vigorous qualitiesamong the second generation of Canadians is deprecated onthe ground that young Canadians would be far betteremployed in agriculture or business than in over-crowdingthe professions and becoming competitors for publicemployment. It was Preston's view that Toronto society waspretentious. (Story).

General Tom Thumb in Ottawa168. General Tom Thumb.

Cabinet Card, portrait photograph. 10.5x 6.3 (4.25"x2.5"), the card was folded causing the card mount to crack onthe back, just noticeable on the front, bit worn but generallyvery good, in ink in a neat hand on the verso, “Ottawa,1883". 50.00

Because of the placeand date on the back, theobvious conclusion is thatGeneral Tom Thumb, oneof Barnum and Bailey mostfamous personage, appear-ed in Ottawa, 1883. Whilethese cabinet cards are stillcommon, it is rare to findone with a Canadian con-nection. I viewed many ofthese cards preparing thisentry and while the posesand dress are all similarthere was none with thisdress.

His name was Char-les Sher w ood Stratt on(1838-1883) & his wife wasLavinia War r en (1841-1919). Under Barnum heachieved world fame and financial success. In fact, latter on,when Barnum & Bailey were in financial trouble, he bailedthem out and became a part.
