The Bradley Flipper

The Flipper

Tow-Ball Cover

Made from heavy gauge steel plate, heavily

chrome plated to give an attractive

appearance to what would otherwise be an

eyesore on your car. Springs easily into

position over the Tow-ball, after towing, to

give protection to hands and clothing when

using the car boot.

The Flipper is easy to fit using the instruction

leaflet supplied.

Approvals & Compatibility Calculations. All braked trailers used within the European Community are subject to stringent approval regulations, these regulations cover

everything from the material used in the manufacture of them to the way the work and how they perform whilst in

operation. Basic descriptions of the regulations are as follows:

71/320 – Covers the mandatory use of hydraulically damped couplings and compatible braking systems, originally covered

standard or none auto reversing brakes. Came into force on the 1st of October 1982.

85/647 – Updated 71/320 and made the use of Auto-reversing brakes mandatory, came into force on the 1st of April 1989.

98/12 -- Superseded both of the above.

94/20 – Covers the structural ability of the products to withstand the forces applied during use.

When requesting a trailer compatibility calculation to be carried out, please ensure the following information has been given.

1. MAXIMUM LADEN WEIGHT OF THE TRAILER Includes the trailer weight and it’s load.

2. COUPLING MAKE AND TYPE Usually marked on the top or side of the main coupling body.

3. BRAKE SIZE AND TYPE Normally stamped into the rear of the brake assembly.

4. TYRE SIZE, TYPE AND ROLLING RADIUS OF TYRE The size is moulded on but you may have to contact

the Tyre or Trailer manufacturer for precise measurement

5. NUMBER OF AXLES Usually single or twin axle or sometimes triple, it also helps if you can tell us how they are

configured ie:

Single – 1 Axle, Twin / Triple close coupled – 2 or 3 axles which are mounted within 1 metre of each other or Twin/

Triple turntable steered 2 or 3 axles where the front axle is mounted on a turntable arrangement and the 1 / 2 rear

axles are at the back of the trailer ( on Triple axle turntables the rear two are usually close coupled)

6. TRAILER MANUFACTURERS NAME Usually marked on the top or side of the main coupling body.

7. TRAILER MODEL TYPE Usually marked on the top or side of the main coupling body.

8. BRAKE OPERATING SYSTEM “CABLE” or RODS?

Is it 1 rod going back from the coupling which connects to two, four or six sheathed cables which lead to the brakes,

note this system may incorporate further shorter rods within the system.

Is it rods all the way through from coupling to axles?

Is it wire cable all the way through?

Is it wire cable back to a connecting plate or balance bar and the sheathed cables from there to the brakes?

If your coupling is an Adjustable Height type it will contain other cables within the system, contact sales for advice.

Remember:

Bradley jaws, pins and hooks are not compatible with German type “DIN” eyes

unless otherwise specified

Bradley provide both the eyes and jaws/hooks to ensure compatibility


1. Don‟t use a Din eyeshaft with a non

Din Towing jaw

2. Fittings (e.g. tailgates, hatches etc.) –

these and any load on the trailer must

be properly secured

3. Tow on the pin, Brake on the jaw

4. If it’s not approved, it‟s not covered!

5. Ensure your jockey wheel is

tightened and lodged so as to allow

safe operation of brakes under all

circumstances

6. When turning, allow more room

when towing

7. Reversing – Use the opposite lock to

direction required, DO NOT allow

trailer to jack-knife

8. Wing Mirrors – Use extended ones

if towing a wide trailer

9. Snaking – If your trailer starts to

snake DO NOT brake. Slow down

gradually

10. Coupling locks – always use one

approved by the manufacturer

11. Pitching – Check the nose weight of

the trailer, excessive nose weight is

dangerous

12. Spare wheel for trailer – check its

condition before setting off, always

carry a spare

13. Trailer parking – fully apply

brakelever and chock the wheels

14. Maintaining your trailer – although

an MOT is not yet mandatory, it is

important to service your trailer

regularly. It is a legal requirement to

ensure your trailer is roadworthy

15. Drop plate – should only be used to

lower a towball, never to raise one.

Height of ball should be between 350

and 420mm

16. Wheel nut torque setting – consult

trailer manufacturer for correct

setting

17. Suspension aids – Use only approved

ones

18. Brakes – Any brakes fitted must

work, they need regular adjustment to

maintain efficiency

19. Trailer Gross Weight – Make sure

your vehicle is capable of towing the

trailer safely, consult your vehicle

handbook or manufacturer if unsure,

DO NOT GUESS

20. Tyres – These are subject to the same

laws as the tyres on a car. Check

pressures regularly

21. Lights – These are subject to the

same laws as your car and must work

22. Number Plate – It must be to the

legal standard and must by law match

the towing vehicle

23. Breakaway cables – ALWAYS use

the manufacturer‟s spare part as it has

Originally established by H & K Bradley in 1948, Cleckheaton West Yorkshire, Bradley quickly grew to become a generic name synonymous for quality within the trailer manufacturing fraternity and by end users alike. The Bradley head office and works are based in Bingley, West Yorkshire, which is approximately six miles north of Bradford, well served by an extensive motorway network affording easy access

to all U.K. Trailer Manufacturers and their 85 distributors in all parts of the

country. It is also well placed to service export markets through the ports of Liverpool and Hull. Bradley Doublelock Eire located in Athlone County Roscommon is the Irish distribution centre for all Bradley products in Ireland, established to directly service the needs of a growing number of Trailer Manufacturers both in the North and South of Ireland and in support of a country wide distribution base.
