Duharte, José Pedro Godoy, Rosario Perriello y Francisca Rojas,
invitado y acogido a participar.

e iberoamericano.

Marcela Duharte, José Pedro Godoy, Rosario Perriello y Francisca
Rojas; y Escenográfica de Felipe Cooper, Javier Coronado y Fran-
cisco Uzabeaga.
Invitamos a profesionales (Constanza Acuña y Josefina Guilisas-

Específicamente quiero agradecer a INCUBO,

Over the course of its 18-year history, the Galería Gabriela
Mistral, a public art space under the auspices of the National
Council for Culture and the Arts, has established itself as an es-
sential source for the cultivation of contemporary art and criti-
cal writing in Chile. Ensconced at the very heart of the country’s
civic life, the gallery functions according to a curatorial policy
that has made it a model for other local spaces.
The gallery’s pioneering role is a consequence of the
explicit desire to make the space a point of reference for helping
to encourage the creation of languages and different kinds of
authorship, most particularly of those artists who use their
creative processes to investigate and experiment. This, in fact,
is precisely one of the most emblematic aspects of the gallery,
which offers artists a space for exhibition as well as a theoretical
backdrop for stimulating debate and reflection on the produc-
tion of contemporary art, through its bilingual catalogue as
well as the conferences that are held for each of the gallery’s
exhibitions.
A brief review of the names of those artists whose work
was featured at the gallery this past year reveals that the objec-
tive of generational renewal has quite clearly been achieved.
This array of artists, moreover, lends new perspectives on a va-
riety of different languages and formats, contemporary as well
as traditional. The wealth and diversity of the visual proposals is
explained and commented upon by the theorists who contribute
to the catalogue and whose texts help resituate the works ex-
hibited and elucidate the codes they contain, shedding light on

them for the viewing public. We should feel quite proud that a
significant part of the critical work on the evolution of contem-
porary art in Chile has been published in our catalogues which,
as such, constitute an important archive of referential material
for research and analysis.
In order to establish the collection of work that will com-
prise the gallery’s yearly exhibition calendar, an open contest is
held and certain artists are invited to exhibit. The artistic qual-
ity and relevance of what we later see exhibited in this space are
the direct results of this curatorial policy. The criteria applied to
this process aim to underscore both an experimental focus as
well as the gallery’s quest to feature new and individual forms of
artistic expression. These criteria, moreover, are consistent with
the general precepts behind contemporary art in the interna-
tional arena.
In 2009, a number of exhibits left their mark on the
gallery: Vida salvaje by Claudia del Fierro, with essays by Kalle
Brolin; Paraíso artificial, featuring the work of Marcela Duharte,
José Pedro Godoy, Rosario Perriello and Francisca Rojas, co-
curated by Constanza Acuña; Enrique Ramírez’s Brisas, which
was complemented by essays by Christian Báez and Néstor
Olhagaray; and Escenográfica, which included works by Felipe
Cooper, Javier Coronado and Francisco Uzabeaga, with texts
by Alejandra Wolff. Rounding out this list is Chille, a project for
which the gallery extended an invitation to the internationally
recognized Mexican artist Yoshua Okón, who created an exhibit
that was curated by Gonzalo Pedraza.
The gallery’s documentary archive is a special resource
that allows us to continue to enjoy and reflect upon the works
exhibited. Each show, from assembly through exhibition, is doc-
umented through photographs and audiovisual tools, as well as
an interview and public conference with the artist following the
inauguration of each show. This virtuous cycle that accompanies
each exhibition provides a space for exploring the complexity
of the many dynamics that the creation of contemporary art
entails, involving not just the object itself but the journey from
the original idea and material nature of the object through to its
process of execution and formal documentation.
In the future, we will continue to support, through the
Galería Gabriela Mistral, these efforts to maintain this active
forum for debate, reflection and understanding, so that it may
be a place where the public feels welcome and encouraged to
participate.
27
The mission of the Galería Gabriela Mistral, a public, non-
commercial gallery space dedicated to the visual arts, is the de-
velopment, exhibition and circulation of contemporary Chilean
and Spanish-American art. Its curatorial orientation is focused
on innovative, compelling aesthetic proposals from all kinds of
artists, whether emerging talents, relatively well-known artists,
or renowned masters of their craft, who do not necessarily tailor
their creative inquiry to the demands of the market.
Each exhibition at the gallery is an original project created
specifically for our space, and is always the result of processes
of investigation and inquiry that pose a broad variety of ques-
tions that are relevant to the age in which we live, and that may
revolve around geopolitical, economic, historical and/or cultural
issues. Our exhibitions also include works that offer reflections
from within the field of art, emphasizing traditional media such
as painting and sculpture.
We are interested in art that is critical, art that works
from and with the local context, that reflects, creates meaning,
and takes risks: “art that (is) thought”1 and from that vantage
point, attempts to make a difference in the artistic circuit. What
stimulates us are artists who subvert, who reveal cracks in the
system, who work with ethics and aesthetics. We are interested
in cultivating a ‘public’ that will maintain a critical relationship
with art, a discerning gaze.
Since 1992, this critical approach has been also buttressed
by our editorial efforts, the goal of which is to offer more space

28
for reflections on the works exhibited and their circulation in
the art world. Every exhibition in the gallery has been accom-
panied by a catalogue, an achievement that constitutes a very
crucial contribution to the history of art in Chile, given that a
considerable portion of the critical writing on the evolution of
contemporary art in Chile has been published in the pages of
our catalogues.
This year, we felt it was important to introduce a change,
and with this in mind we decided to create a single volume that
might encompass all the exhibitions held in the gallery over
the past year and draw attention to the entire scope of visual
endeavors, from Chile and abroad, that reflect the curatorial
perspective of the Gallery.
As a space for visual art, part of our working process in-
volves selecting those exhibitions that will be part of our yearly
program. This is carried out in two ways: on the one hand, by
inviting artists who are either firmly established in the field or
of intermediate circulation, and on the other hand, through a
public competition that is open to artists and curators who are
either Chilean or resident foreigners. The jury for the competi-
tion is comprised of experts in contemporary visual arts and
changes every year. For the 2009 program, the jury included
Eduardo Lyon, architect; Carlos Navarrete and Alejandra Wolff,
both artists and curators; and myself, in my capacity as Director
of the Galería Gabriela Mistral.
This catalogue features all the projects chosen for exhibi-
tion at the gallery, through both forms of selection. It includes a
presentation of the work of Mexican artist Yoshua Okón, who in
2008 spent a month in Chile under the auspices of the artist-
in-residence program of INCUBO,2 with the goal of researching
“the visual politics that surrounds the images of the dictator-
ship and the arts in Chile.”3 We invited Okón to contribute to
our exhibition program through a work created for the Galería
Gabriela Mistral in collaboration with curator Gonzalo Pedraza.
Okón’s exhibition, entitled Chille, could easily be categorized
as ‘protest art and politics’, but it in fact goes far beyond that
denomination, thanks to the humor, irony and utter lack of
prejudice with which it questions our local context by staging a
reprise of Pinochet’s funeral.
In this catalogue we also offer a glimpse of those exhibi-
tions and projects that were selected through the open com-
petition. Among them are two individual shows, Claudia del
Fierro’s Vida salvaje (Wild life) and Brisas (Breezes) by Enrique
Ramírez, and two group shows featuring the work of young
artists, articulated through two very different project proposals.
The first group show is Paraíso artificial (Artificial paradise), with
works by Marcela Duharte, José Pedro Godoy, Rosario Perriello,
and Francisca Rojas. The second is Escenográfica, with the work
of Felipe Cooper, Javier Coronado, and Francisco Uzabeaga. For
these two group shows, we followed a new model that allowed
us to juxtapose works both formally and discursively, and led
us to establish certain guidelines for the critical exploration of
emerging art in the process of its very formulation. For these
two projects we invited professionals (Constanza Acuña and
Josefina Guilisasti, respectively) to work in conjunction with
the artists and the gallery, establishing a dialogue that negoti-
ated between the production of the works and the design of the
exhibition itself.
Each exhibit offered a very specific investigative process.
Claudia del Fierro, in Vida salvaje, peered into the option of life
on the margins, via a small community in the north of Europe
(Nacka Reserve). This piece was crafted through conversations,
notes and drawings that revolved around politics, environmen-
talism, and community. The research undertaken for the piece
was informed by the experience of the artist-traveler herself:
Claudia del Fierro used her own condition as an outsider in
29
that specific place to become a chronicler, and took notes of her
own, as did the European explorers of the 19th century in Latin
America.
In Paraíso artificial, the work of Marcela Duharte, José Pe-
dro Godoy, Rosario Perriello, and Francisca Rojas were brought
together on the basis of a connection that, at first glance, may
seem remote, but which reveals a common obsession, start-
ing with material experimentation or a new kind of Baroque
gaze, and invites the viewer to enter artificial worlds, striking
a contrast between the viewer’s experience of the everyday and
stimulating it to awaken some kind of creative understanding.
In Brisas, Enrique Ramírez poses questions about Chile’s
recent history and memory and wonders how, precisely, to
revisit it so as to gain an understanding of how a new generation
of Chileans identify with a part of the country’s history, the part
that still exists. “Wasn’t that the way it was? Is it impossible
to look back?” Ramírez asks himself. His investigative process
uses a verse from the national anthem of Chile to recreate the
memory of a place that became the icon of both the dictator-
ship as well as the return to democracy, a place that became the
cradle of the greatest joys and tragedies of an entire citizenry.
In Escenográfica, the work of three painters –Felipe Cooper,
Javier Coronado, and Francisco Uzabeaga– questions the very
categories of artistic representation, the ‘mise en scene’ that lies
behind mechanisms and procedures. A collection of paintings
that come together to unveil the complex diagram of visual
techniques, ruses and artifices that artists use in their attempts
to record the true existence of what they see.
Each one of these exhibits was created especially for
the Galería Gabriela Mistral, and their production required a
tremendous collective effort and commitment from artists,
curators, theorists, and the gallery. We should also add that the
authors of the introductory texts written for each exhibition,
which have been condensed for the purposes of this cata-
logue, were selected in almost all cases through overwhelming
consensus among the artists, and we believe that each of these
essays offers an insightful and provocative interpretation of the
exhibitions.
We would also like to take this opportunity to express
our gratitude to the artists, curators, exhibition editors, writers,
designers, producers, coordinators, photographers, benefactors,
contributors, inspirers, audiences and readers who, in some way
or another, have been part of this great 2009 endeavor. Thanks
to all of these people we have been able to offer an exhibition
calendar that, without a doubt, makes a contribution to the field
of contemporary art. I would like to extend a special thanks to
INCUBO, not only for its support of the Galería Gabriela Mistral
in 2009, but also for its valuable contribution to the contempo-
rary art scene in Chile.

mentos muchas veces silentes.

a ocurrir.

articulación: interior/exterior, visible/invisible, presente/pasado.

Water and origins. A close-up of a pool of water. In Santiago,
Chile, an absolutely drenched figure begins to walk down the
San Diego Street, from south to north. Some seventy meters lie
between him and an intersection with one of the city’s most impor-
tant thoroughfares, the Alameda. The voice-over is interrupted by
tape-recorded voices of the Chilean military officers involved in the
1973 coup d’etat.
There is only one History, but the individual Histories
and stories are many. If we were to conceive of History as an
accumulation of facts that have already occurred, we would
just refer to numbers, names and notes of disconnected,
empty events. History is made with documents, traces, signs,
vestiges, and fragments that are often silent. They are the
things that can attest to the past and the multiplicity of oc-
currences.
Absence, lack and excess have a way of becoming real
headaches. Naturally, the task becomes even more complex
if we consider the fact that no historical problem rests upon
one single, special type of document. Quite the contrary: the
diversity of the documentary realm is precisely what makes
the work of the historian a constant challenge. The very best
we can do, then, is to remain highly aware of the possibility
that at any moment some bit of information might reveal
itself in the most unexpected way, and this is doubly true if

we consider the possibility of broadening the scope of what
we traditionally consider documents.
A document is “the result of the effort made by historical
societies to impose upon the future –unwittingly or not– the
established image they have of themselves.”1 Nevertheless,
without the aid of an interpreter, someone who can lend mean-
ing to the document, this experience is bereft of meaning. This
is precisely one of the achievements of Enrique Ramírez’s work:
collective History and individual Histories become flesh, escap-
ing their apparent vacuity as the work weaves together experi-
ences that are both social and individual. In his audio-visual
endeavor, collective History breathes, individual histories throb.
It is a collective History that is human, they are collective His-
tories of real people.2 It is his own History that is revealed for
all to see. Collective and individual Histories, reconstructions of
the past that take on real meaning in the present, a warning to
not forget.
Brisas, for example, has already gone on to become part
of that trove of documents that the historians of the future
will have in their hands.
Water and death. As the soaking-wet man approaches the
Alameda, he reflects upon the political prisoners thrown to the sea:
The sea carries off the sorrows of a place like this. Sailors say that
it is the shellfish that make off with the souls of the disappeared.
The memory is fragile, oblivion is desirable. But the
work of Enrique Ramírez knows how to chronicle this recent
history, by situating us in the place where events occurred,
and having us enter the very epicenter of political power in
Chile. In one sequence shot, he makes us look, and he makes
us look at ourselves. Over the course of almost 13 minutes
he asks us to reflect upon our recent History, our present
political life and what we wish to project as a nation. As a
complement to the film, he offers the testimony of a number
of young politically active Chileans, who help to contextual-
ize one of Enrique’s preoccupations: present-day Chile. Using
a panoramic video format of three synchronized projections,
these interviews are juxtaposed against images of the ocean
until reaching the Plaza de la Ciudadanía (Citizenry Square),
in front of La Moneda, the Chilean house of government.
The memory is fragile, oblivion is easy. More so if the
events of the past are not pleasing to our personal or col-
lective memories. And especially if the traces left behind by
those events betray human misery, complicit silence, or unre-
alized dreams. Especially if the places where those memories
reside are cloaked in a sterile halo of amnesia.
Water and connection (or water and disconnection). The
soaking-wet man enters the Plaza de la Ciudadanía, a place that is
off-limits to the casual passerby, despite the fact that it is a ‘square
of the citizenry.’ In one of the lateral fountains, he sees the figure
of his mother. She is up to her knees in water. Aside from the pools,
the gates serve to divide and demarcate the public space from the
private space of central power.
Any one public space may be the repository of an infi-
nite number of memory sites due to the infinite number of
specific, personal events that may have taken place there: a
first kiss, a final goodbye, a sudden death; all are occurrences
that can lend special meaning to a given space.
Nevertheless, there are also those places that appeal to
the collective sensibility, places that reveal the link society
has with those spaces and the events that have transpired in
those places. La Moneda, in particular, is one of those sites in
the city of Santiago, Chile, that speaks to us about the past,
but with the voices of the present. What is at stake is not its
monumentality but rather the events that occurred there,
even though by now the traces of those events have already
been erased.

A parenthesis. In the city of Berlin there is a Lutheran
church in a state of near ruin, the result of bombings during
the Second World War. It is called the Memorial Church,
(Gedächtniskirche), built between 1891 and 1895, in honor
of the emperor William I. Nowadays it is a commemorative
antiwar monument. It is a memory site that quite plainly il-
lustrates the effects of bullets and bombs. Close parenthesis.
One of the side entrances to La Moneda was built
in 1906 during the administration of Pedro Montt. This
door, located at Morandé Street number 80, served for sev-
eral decades as the official entrance for the president and
his family. On September 11, 1973, the body of President
Salvador Allende was removed through that door. General
Pinochet’s dictatorship removed all traces of that point of
access, and rebuilt the governmental palace, erasing the
evidence of bullet holes and bombings in the process. For
several years this virtual place was the focal point of trib-
utes and commemorations honoring the figure of Allende.
It was the memory, too, of a lost democratic past. In this
sense, Morandé 80 was one memory site located inside
another one. Under the presidency of Ricardo Lagos this
door was reopened, on September 10, 2003.
The Memorial Church in Berlin, La Moneda in Santiago.
The former, with the consequences of war exposed for all to see,
the latter pristine and reconstructed (with the corresponding oc-
clusions of the dictatorship). Different strategies for the Nunca
Más (Never Again) campaign. And yet, one has to wonder: is
this enough to keep wars and coup d’etats from happening?
The memory sites are there, but are we willing to listen to their
messages?
Another bit of information. In 2009 La Moneda was
added to the Ruta de la Memoria, the ‘Memory Route’ (San-
tiago 1973-1989, number 48 in the collection of patrimonial
routes), a project sponsored by the Ministry of National
Landmarks, which seeks to add the governmental palace to
the itinerary of sites that are considered emblematic of the
human rights violations that were committed in Chile during
the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. A kind of tour-
ism of memories.
At the present time, the growth of this memory cult
is expressed through memorial museums, commemorative
plaques, floral offerings, evocative statues, changes in street
names: an exhaustive job of makeup and beautification that
only allows us to contemplate, with slightly more human
eyes, some or other horror from our recent past. A horror
that, of course, we could never tolerate or accept.
In the words of Georges Didi-Huberman, “…the image
burns through memory, in other words it burns even though
it is nothing but ash: it is a way of declaring its essential
vocation for survival, for the despite everything.” Brisas is
precisely a ‘despite everything’ that burns even though it is
just ash. It becomes one of the perspectives possible in the
contemplation of our past, is it one of the possible modes of
gaining access to the comprehension of what cannot happen
again.
The water and the end of the road. The man has com-
pleted his tour, he emerges through the door to La Moneda
and, his back to the viewer, receives the artificial rain
sprinkled on him by two irrigation trucks. Will the water
wash everything clean?

2 In the work of Enrique Ramírez, a first glimpse of this theme can be found in Paisaje (Landscape), dated 2007, in which a group of foreigners residing in Chile during the government of General Pinochet talked about their personal experiences.

In Brisas, Enrique Ramírez invites us to engage in an
operation that consists of superimposing the past upon
the present. The camera’s traveling shot does precisely that,
unrolling the rug of the past upon the asphalt of the present.
In reality it is a journey woven together by superimposing a
series of snapshots, frozen sound images, upon one another.
The space of memory had to be recreated as experience
lived. To demonstrate how time unravels, to demonstrate the
passage of time, to give it a physical size and scale, to return
to the scene through a topographical survey.
To reconstruct the past through its spatial represen-
tation by way of experience. We know that time, as expe-
rienced through memory, is not linear but rather a kind
of pileup of events that become linked, tangled, blended
together. It is precisely those ‘befores’ and ‘afters’ that fight
for their place in memory, however, that drive the memory.
And it is the traveling shot that, in some sense, organizes
this temporal collage, those fragments that wish to become
the sinécdoques of time that has slipped away, and not just
mere details.
There is only one thing that time cannot do, or that we
cannot do with it: there is no going back. This is why the camera
is given the task of moving forward inexorably, but down the
path of memory, a memory that makes no concessions, because
the referential system to which this time alludes is historical
time.
The cameraman, the ‘man with the movie camera’
in the style of Dziga Vertov, with his camera on top of the
steadycam, pushes the actor, taking him to the place where
history occurred –right there, right around the corner, just
two blocks away. Only this time it is without the deafening
racket of machine guns, just the peaceful, early morning
silence of a Sunday out on the Alameda de las Delicias.

It is a paradoxical detail that the representatives of Or-
den y Patria (Order and Homeland) should contribute to this
silence that commemorates and allows the story to evolve
and become intertwined with the image.
At the same time, since history cannot be stopped, the
cameraman knows this and his performance takes this into
account, without stopping, without stumbling, in a con-
tinuum that can only be stopped by revealing the artifice of
cinematographic writing.
– Guillermo, what are you doing there, up to your knees in water?
The cinematographic picture pits us against each other,
confronting us, precluding the city from being reduced to its
pure visible statement. The actor drives us and invites us to
abandon the visible realm so that we may enter something
that, today, is invisible but that time has already written into
the annals of history.
The camera moves the visible realm away from us, turn-
ing it into gaze. Rescuing the invisible, transforming the
visible into time. The picture hides and reveals, constantly in
the dialectic of the field and the area outside of the field. In
that game of hiding and showing, of revealing, the traveler is
united with the path, with the corridor where men, history,
and time circulate.
The image fuses space and time. Time passes by because
we pass through it.
To establish the conjunction of the interior space of
memory with the solemn immensity of the memory’s scenic
space.
Two spaces that come together, the scene grows as the
interior space is affected. To involve the body in this condi-
tion, take it to the torsion that allows it to pass into another
dimension, that of the memory, like the Moebius band, in
which the torsion eliminates the notion of an inside and an
outside and moves from the finite to the infinite.
This shift makes my body participate, forcing me to
reassign its primordial role so that it is not only container
and receptacle but articulation (hinge) and principal operator
of our perceptive experience.
History as a mood; the meaning of history is in each
one of us and in the capacity of rehabilitating it through an
experience.
A matter of memory, body and image.
Experience, the revolving door between body and im-
age, feeding this circulation whether from the side of sensa-
tions or the image, or both at the same time, or inverting this
process as often occurs in our experiences.
In this passage, memory is the protagonist that has always
been there, residing in our remote, intimate pockets, and be-
cause it is virtual we grant it the status of pure perception.
Can we detach ourselves from our bodies in this passage
to memory and supposedly pass from matter to virtuality?
We are convinced that the work of the memory consists
of a regressive process involving a route that begins in the
present and searches for something in the past. But the very
opposite is true: the constructive shift of memory is in fact
inverse; it moves from the past to the present, it conjugates
the past in the present.
This process becomes a methodological and experimen-
tal field in which the first task is that of recuperating those
starting points, in a kind of virtual state, and dragging them
through the filters and successive layers of the palimpsest of
our conscience. This construct that we shift and build at the
same time, that almost always coincides –though in an im-
precise, uncomfortable, veiled way- with our existing state of
174
perception, becomes a present state, producing a communion
between consciousness and body.
The present then becomes a multifaceted state in which
diverse states of consciousness, feelings and most especially
the body, become intertwined. The memory is no longer
something of the past when it materializes as an active pres-
ent and ceases to be a virtual image.
In this way, in the practice of art we make our bodies and
their environments the end of the traveling shot, which signifies
the passage through the different layers of our consciousness.
To work the density and thickness of that journey,
means prolonging the past in the present, affixing memory
–and as such, its relevance– to the body.
– Guillermo, what are you doing there, up to your knees in
water?
– I know, the water [is] like a mirror that blinds you…
For J. Louis Baudry, the essential mechanism of film
produces in the viewer a ‘primary identification’ with the
camera, that ‘transcendental’ (theological) eye that organizes
the representation, and a ‘secondary identification’ with the
actor and/or the symbolic contents. In this passage from one
identification to another, the viewer/reader should repro-
duce the process of building an image, and for this he should
assume the position of ‘interlocutor.’ This shift of roles, this
mobility of identifications, is only possible thanks to this
‘primary identification’. Lacan described it as “the mirror
state”, the establishment of the shift of the ‘self ’, which then
allowed its bifurcation. The ‘mirror state or phase’ marks the
first attempt at construction of a ‘self ’ outside of my corpo-
real existence. ‘Primary identification’ would be a primitive
form of the constitution of the subject, upon the model ‘of
the other’. ‘Secondary identification’, on the other hand, is
a psychological process by which the subject assimilates an
aspect, a quality, an attribute of the other (or otherness), and
achieves a transformation upon the model of the other. Both
identifications strengthen each other.
Brisas offers me two screens: one that opens up as
a luminous extension before my eyes, and another in
the sequence shot; I am situated in the optical eye of the
camera that incorporates me and transforms that screen
into a part of me. During this hiatus, this transitivity, the
cinematographic frame sets itself up as a double game,
double articulation: interior/exterior, visible/invisible,
present/past. Alternance and confusion.
The scene revisited, the history is there, the screen is
me. And they blend together and stand out, detachment and
involvement. The gaze returns to itself, to us, to our con-
sciousness.
– Guillermo, what are you doing there, up to your knees in
water?
– Yes, the water [is] like a mirror that blinds you, that impedes
our simple and mechanical reflection, but only in that way does
it give us access to the opacity and density of history.
