Ce lo siamo chiesti tante volte ma i festival sono utili o sono solo vanità? Oggi più che mai ce lo siamo domandato nuovamente, perché organizzare un festival al tempo della grande crisi, di certo, di positivo, signifi ca buttare defi niti-vamente il tappeto rosso e tutti gli ornamenti della “Società dello spettacolo” e del comparire, zero spazio all’effi mero per concentrarsi solo a creare bellezza privileggiando la cultura, off rire un viaggio nel cinema più sconosciuto concedendo un’occasione di visibilità a oltre 800 fi lm provenienti da 60 Nazioni, questi i numeri della IX Edizione del SFF. Così gli autori partecipanti hanno voluto premiare la nostra valo-rizzazione del patrimonio prodotto dalla macchina cinema indipendente. Al Quadrilatero dell’Università di Sassari sono in programma dal 23 al 28 Giugno l’edizione di un festival veramente indipendente, senza alcun scopo mercantile, nel segno dell’imprevedibilità e della sorpresa, non solo per le opere proiettate che sono per lo più fuori del sistema indu-striale con budget ridottissimi, ma veramente ricchi di inven-tiva, fantasia e capacità di far emozionare. Ci saranno anche e non solo gli importanti eventi collaterali già annunciati o a sorpresa, tutto grazie alla strategia imprevedibile dell’Or-ganizzazione del festival che però soff re per la mancanza di fi nanziamenti che fi no ad ora non sono stati nemmeno promessi. Noi andiamo avanti perché il nostro festival, anche quest’anno, è stato premiato con il Patrocinio della Presiden-za del Consiglio, del MIBAC, dell’Unesco, dell’EXPO 2015; con premi di rappresentanza delle massime Cariche dello Stato e di tanti altri autorevoli Enti e Autorità. Andiamo avanti per l’aff ermazione avuta con il riscontro delle opere pervenute e del pubblico che anche quest’anno si è prenotato per assi-

stere al festival dedicato al cinema, il più grande spettacolo del mondo, che ci sarà in Sardegna, una delle isole più aff a-scinanti del Mediterraneo e non solo, in una città importante come quella di Sassari che anche quest’anno ci ospita nella sua prestigiosa Università.

It has been asked many times whether festivals are useful or are just an extravagance? Today, more than ever, we need to ask again why it is important to organize a festival during an economic crisis. Of course, from a positive point of view, it certainly means throwing away the red carpet and all the trap-pings of the “high-society of the fi lm world “ and to aff ord no room to the ephemeral to focus only on the creation of beauty and culture. It means off ering a journey into less well-known cinema by giving a platform to more than 800 fi lms from 60 nations - these are the fi gures of the Ninth Renewal of the SFF. In this context the participating fi lm makers value the impor-tance we give to independent cinema. There will be, in the Quadrangle of the University of Sassari between June 23rd and June 28th, a truly independent renewal of the festival, without any commercial agenda. Many of the fi lms shown will not be a product of the commercial system but made on a tiny budget, but at the same time rich in inventiveness, fatasy and rich in the the ability to move their audience. There will also be not only the events already announced but also surprises, all thanks to the planning of the of the festival organizers who, however, have suff ered from a lack of funding. We are able to go ahead because our festival has been honoured with the patronage of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Culture, UNESCO, and EXPO 2015 as well as many other organizations and authorities.

Salutiamo con piacere la IX edizione di Sardinia fi lm festival che, anche quest’anno, può fregiarsi dell’importante patrocinio della Presidenza del Con-siglio dei Ministri al quale si aggiunge l’altrettanto importante patrocinio della Commissione nazionale italiana per l’Unesco. Un risultato che dimostra come la manifestazione in tutti questi anni di vita abbia maturato esperienza, sia stata capace di raccogliere numerosissimi consensi e abbia espresso un elevato valore.La novità che quest’anno caratterizza l’iniziativa, cioè dodici giorni di proiezioni in tre comuni diff erenti (Sassari, Villanova Monteleone e Martis), è anche la prova di come la cultura non debba restare chiu-sa all’interno di quattro mura ma debba espandersi come un «virus benefi co». Si apre così un’occasione di confronto e di promozione del territorio che dispo-ne di un patrimonio storico-culturale vero e proprio motore di sviluppo e di occupazione. Sono convinto infatti che si debba lavorare alla valorizzazione della cultura identitaria partendo dalle nostre tradizione. Sardinia fi lm festival, allora, è anche questo, un modo di fare cultura basato sulla qualità, sulla condivisione e sulla capacità di collaborazione.La sezione dedicata al “Life after oil”, infi ne, bene si inserisce in un contesto attuale in cui i prodotti e l’energia a basso impatto ambientale rappresentano un alto valore di sostenibilità ecologica.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the ninth renewal of the Sardinia Film Festival, which this year can be proud of the valuable patronage of the Presi-dency of the Council of Ministers and also of the equally valuable patronage of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO. This shows that over the past years the event has gained in experience and approval and has become highly important.What is new to the initiative this year is that twelve days of screenings in three diff erent regions (Sassari, Villanova Monteleone and Martis), proves that cultu-re should not remain enclosed within four walls but should spread as if it were a “benefi cial virus”. This gives us an opportunity for discussion and promotion of the territory, from the point of view of our historical and cultural heritage, which can really be an engine for growth and employment. I am convinced that we must work on the enhancement of cultural identity starting from the basis of our tradition.The Sardinia Film Festival is thus a way of building a culture based on quality, sharing and collaboration.Finally, the part of the festival dedicated to “Life after oil” is very suitable in a contemporary context in which products and energy with low environmental impact give a high value to ecological sustainability.

Ancora una volta il Sardinia Film Festival si confer-ma un’importante vetrina dedicata all’audiovisivo di qualità. Con la nona edizione, che presenta oltre 800 cortometraggi da ben 60 paesi ed una signifi cativa attenzione alle prime visioni ed alle opere dei gio-vani, Sassari coglie un’ulteriore occasione di ribalta internazionale. Lo fa in un tempo di crisi economica, che investe anche la nostra città e la Sardegna intera. Va ricordato che proprio grazie ad eventi di grande prestigio come questi è possibile creare momenti di attrazione. Le manifestazioni culturali, e tra queste i festival cinematografi ci, svolgono una funzione spesso non valutata correttamente. Fuori dalla nostra isola è diffi cile ritagliare per Sassari spazi sui media che vadano oltre il binomio spiaggia-mare. È invece la cultura un settore su cui impostare una politica caratterizzata da un forte legame con le nostre tradi-zioni ma che possa mettere insieme le esperienze in-ternazionali con altre sensibilità a partire dall’arte ci-nematografi ca. Tutto questo grazie ai cortometraggi, protagonisti al Sardinia Film Festival. Con l’impegno di questi anni è stata creata una realtà apprezzata in tutto il mondo. Lo dicono i numeri ed il sostegno prestigioso delle massime Istituzioni nazionali. Sas-sari deve essere orgogliosa del Festival. Proiettiamoci allora alla decima edizione, nel 2015, un traguardo che sia al contempo un momento di rifl essione per il nostro futuro, oltre che di grande soddisfazione.

Once again the Sardinia Film Festival proves itself as a worthy showcase for quality audiovisual arts. Thanks to the ninth edition -which collects 800 short movies from 60 countries, wisely looks on fi lm previews and values the works of young fi lm makers- Sassari gets back, one more time, into the public eye. The Sardinia Film Festival achieves his purposes, in spite of the eco-nomic crisis that weigh down not only our city but the whole Sardinia along with the rest of Italy. Everybody knows that, despite the crisis, cultural events such as cinema festivals strongly attract people, although they are often underestimate. It is very diffi cult for Sassari to be talked about by the media, except for her neigh-bouring beaches. Nevertheless, it is necessary to create a cultural policy that combines our customs and tradi-tions with international experiences. This goal can be reached by means of short movies, the protagonists of Sardinia Film Festival. Year after year, the Festival has become a well-known and appreciated event all over the world, and has obtained the support of the Italian top politics institutions. Sassari must be proud of the Sardinia Film Festival. We look forward to the tenth edition and wish it will be a special occasion to think about our future and enjoy the obtained aims.

Anche quest’anno Villanova Monteleone, nelle giornate del 21, 22 e 23 agosto 2014, ospiterà il fe-stival del documentario riservato ai migliori lavori italiani, con proiezioni all’aperto nelle piazzette e negli angoli più suggestivi del centro storico. La se-conda edizione del festival conferma il sodalizio con il Cineclub di Sassari, che da subito ha dato ampia di-sponibilità a garantire il necessario supporto tecnico-organizzativo per il successo della manifestazione. Lo scorso anno, l’ottimo riscontro di pubblico e di critica ci ha convinto ancor più dell’originalità del progetto, nella consapevolezza di off rire una produzione di as-soluta qualità artistico - culturale. Peraltro, lo scenario delle calde notti d’agosto, rende ancor più interessan-te le serate dedicate al documentario e alle storie che raccontano. Le proiezioni dei singoli documentari in concorso, saranno precedute da chiaccherate/dibat-tito con il coinvolgimento degli autori, di giornalisti, scrittori, registi, che converseranno direttamente con il pubblico. Durante la tre giorni dedicata al festival, Villanova off rirà ai visitatori, oltre al fascino del pro-prio centro storico, la possibilità di visitare interessan-ti mostre fotografi che e allestimenti di arte moderna, ospitate negli eleganti palazzi espositivi di Su Palatu e sa Domo Manna. Nella convinzione che anche questa edizione del fe-stival del documentario saprà sorprendere e suscitare generale interesse, siamo pronti ad accogliere chiun-que voglia vivere questi momenti.

This year on 21, 22 and 23 August 2014, Villanova Monteleone will again host the festival’s documentary section, consisting of the best Italian works, with ou-tdoor screenings in the squares and most picturesque corners of the old town. The second renewal of the fe-stival has cemented our association with the Film Club of Sassari, who have been very willing to provide the necessary technical and organizational support for the success of the event. Last year, the excellent response from both the public and critics convinced us of the originality of this project and the awareness to off er a production of the highest artistic and cultural quality. The setting of the hot August nights makes for even more interesting evenings devoted to documentaries and the stories they tell. The screenings of the individual fi lms in the competi-tion, will be preceded by talks and discussions with fi lm makers, journalists, writers and directors, with whom the public will have the opportunity to talk directly. Du-ring the three days of the festival Villanova will provide visitors, in addition to the charms of its historic centre, the opportunity to view photographic exhibitions and exhibitions of modern art, housed in the galleries of Su Palatu and Domo Manna.In the belief that this year’s documentary festival will both surprise and excite general interest, we are ready to welcome all who wish to share this experience.

Il comune di Martis è lieto di collaborare per la prima volta alla nona edizione del Sardinia Film Fe-stival: un appuntamento di grande prestigio per un paesino piccolo come Martis che sostiene da alcuni anni un progetto di vita ecosostenibile. Dal 1 al 3 agosto il nostro Comune avrà l’occasione di confrontarsi su un tema importante come quello dell’inquinamento, con una nuova sezione del Sar-dinia Film Festival 2014, denominata “Life after oil”, dedicata a fi lm che raccontano storie, con alternative ecologiche e sostenibili all’utilizzo del petrolio nella vita di tutti i giorni: dall’elettronica all’abbigliamen-to, dall’agricoltura ai trasporti e all’edilizia. La rassegna cinematografi ca, oltre lo spettacolo, per il nostro piccolo centro, sarà anche il consolidamento di un programma, denominato “Martis”, iniziato qual-che anno fa, contro progetti che non lasciano nessun tipo di ricchezza al nostro territorio e mettono in se-rio pericolo la qualità ambientale e di conseguenza la salute. Il Comune di Martis, in collaborazione con una serie di comuni, ha elaborato un documento di intesa contro i rischi che deriverebbero dalle attività di ricerca non corrispondenti a determinati criteri e lo sfruttamento del territorio senza avere le giuste ga-ranzie. Siamo orgogliosi di ospitare quest’importante manifestazione che ci permetterà per tre giorni di oltrepassare i confi ni di quest’isola, con la possibilità di promuovere scambi con culture e realtà diverse.

Martis is pleased to be participating for the fi rst time in the ninth renewal of the Sardinia Film Festival. This is an event of great prestige for a small town like Martis which for a number of years has supported a project of sustainable living. From 1 to 3 August our town will have the opportunity to examine the important issue of pollution, with a new section of the Sardinia Film Festival 2014, “Life af-ter oil”, dedicated to fi lms with the theme of ecologicalalternatives and sustainable use of oil in everyday life: from electronics to clothing, from agriculture to tran-sport and construction. The fi lm festival, for our small town, will also aid the consolidation of the “Martis” program, started a few years ago, which aims to counteract projects that do not enrich our area and endanger the environment and ,consequently, health. Martis, in collaboration with a number of other communities, has drawn up a agreement concerning the risks that would arise from research activities that do not reach predetermined cri-teria and land use without the correct safeguards. We are proud to host this important event which will give us three days in which to step outside the boundaries of this island, with the possibility of promoting changes together with diff erent cultures and realities.

L’Accademia di Belle Arti Mario Sironi è da sem-

pre molto attenta alle questioni legate al cinema e

in particolar modo al “cinema corto” e d’animazione.

In questo caso siamo particolarmente orgogliosi di

ospitare parte della manifestazione della IX edizione

del Sardinia fi lm festival all’interno della nostra re-

altà accademica non solo per il medesimo interesse

rispetto alla “settima arte”, ma anche per l’importan-

za che riveste tale avvenimento sia a livello regionale

che nazionale. Mi auguro che nei prossimi anni si

possa collaborare sempre più fattivamente per pro-

muovere in Sardegna la diff usione del cinema corto

e d’animazione.

The Academy of Fine Arts “Mario Sironi” always pays

attention to the cinema, particularly when it’s about

short movies and animation movies. Therefore we are

very proud to put up some of the ninth edition of Sar-

dinia Film Festival in our Academy, not only because of

our interest towards the “seventh art”, but also owing to

the worth of the Festival as for Sardinia and as for the

rest of Italy. I wish the partnership between Academy

of Fine Arts and Sardinia Film Festival to strengthen in

the next years, in order to promote a wide circulation of

short and animation movies in Sardinia.

L’Accademia di Belle Arti di Sassari diventa per tre giorni una sede

distaccata del Sardinia Film Festival. Si parte il 25 con la proiezione

dei cortometraggi in concorso di genere Sperimentale. Il 26 si passa

alla VideoArte e, infi ne, il 27 ai corti di Animazione. I docenti e gli

studenti costituiranno una giuria che nominerà i vincitori nelle tre

categorie. Tutti i fi lm saranno proiettati in Aula Magna dalle 16 alle

20. Naturalmente l’ingresso è libero e aperto a tutti. Il primo fi lm che

mostra l’azione continua è stato realizzato nel lontano 1892 da Emile

Reynaud con il suo Prassinoscopio-teatro ed è considerato a tutti gli

eff etti un fi lm d’animazione. In tal senso, poiché tutti i fi lm, anche

quelli realizzati “dal vero”, sono dati dal movimento di fotogrammi

statici, si potrà tranquillamente concludere che tutto il cinema può

essere defi nito d’animazione. La singolarità del cinema d’anima-

zione però risiede in una sorta di rapporto diretto che l’autore ha

con le immagini, con il disegno o con l’opera che sta realizzando. Il

nodo teorico centrale delle avanguardie storiche e di alcuni autori

come Eggeling, Ruttman,Fichinger etc..è particolarmente legato al

cosiddetto cinema d’artista ma è anche l’elemento unifi cante del

fare artistico nella realizzazione del cinema d’animazione tout court.

In Accademia già da 15 anni operiamo una sensibilizzazione verso

questo tipo di espressione artistica (ci siamo occupati, negli anni,

di tutto il cinema d’animazione: dalle avanguardie storiche, al cine-

ma astratto, al cinema d’incisione di Alexeieff , fi no alle nuove tec-

nologie). Disegno, pittura, scultura, scenografi a, grafi ca, incisione

fotografi a, etc., trovano nel cinema, e nel cinema d’animazione in

particolare, la sintesi perfetta della tensione al movimento. Oggi il

cinema, con il progredire delle tecnologie, ha trovato nel digitale un

nuovo strumento di ricerca e fruizione. Questo permette di ricreare

la realtà come da un foglio bianco o dalla tela di un pittore e con il

3D si è andati oltre, riuscendo a realizzare anche oggetti che ten-

gono conto della tridimensionalità delle cose e dello spazio in cui ci

muoviamo; così se il pixel corrisponde a un pigmento in pittura, il 3D

corrisponde ad una realizzazione scultorea. Ebbene, oltre al fatto che

nelle accademie di belle arti (e in particolare nell’Accademia Mario

Sironi) si insegni e si faccia il cinema d’animazione, tutto ciò di cui

abbiamo parlato non è forse quello che in un’ accademia di belle arti

si aff ronta quotidianamente?

For three days the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari hosts part of the

Sardinia Film Festival. It will begin on 25 June with the screening of

short fi lms of an Experimental nature. Video Art will be the focus of

the 26th and fi nally, on the 27th, Short Animations. These fi lms will be

in competition and will be judged by a panel of teachers and students

who will choose a winner in each of the three categories. All of the fi lms

will be screened in the Aula Magna (Great Hall) between 4PM and

8PM. Admission is free and open to all. The fi rst fi lm to demonstrate

continuous action or movement was made in 1892 by Emile Reynaud

with his Praxinoscope-Theatre and is considered to be, eff ectively, an

animated fi lm. In this sense, as all fi lms, including cinema “dal vero”,

are derived from the movement of static frames, it can safely be con-

cluded that all cinema can be defi ned as animation. The peculiarity of

animated fi lms, however, lies in a kind of direct relationship that the

fi lm-maker has with the images, the design or the work that is being

depicted. The central theoretical point of the historical avant-garde and

fi lm-makers such as Eggeling, Ruttman, Fichinger etc. is particularly

related to so-called “art fi lms” but is also the unifying element of arti-

stic achievement in animated cinema “tout court”. For the last fi fteen

years at the Academy we have been sensitive to this type of artistic

expression; over the years we have dealt with the whole spectrum of

animated cinema, from the historical avant-garde to abstract cinema,

from cinema of Alexeieff right through to modern technologies. Dra-

wing, painting, sculpture, set design, graphics, photo engraving etc.

represent in cinema, and animation in particular, the perfect synthesis

of the tension of movement. Nowadays, cinema, with the progress of

digital technology, has found new tools for further achievements. This

allows the recreation of reality from a blank sheet of paper or a pain-

ter’s canvas; with 3D cinema has gone even further, succeeding in de-

picting the three-dimensional nature of objects and the space in which

we move. Thus, if the pixel corresponds to a pigment in paint, 3D can

provide us with a sculptural realization. So, is it true to say that given

that, in Academies of fi ne arts (and in paricular the Academy of Mario

Sironi) what we teach and what we do with animated fi lm, as has been

outlined above, concerns what we generally do on a daily basis?

Noi del Cineclub Sassari Fedic, oltre ad organizzare il Sardinia Film Festival, ci occupiamo stabilmente di pro-duzione, catalogazione e diff usione al pubblico di opere cinematografi che. Nasciamo a metà del secolo scorso, nel 1951, in un periodo in cui in tutta l’Italia si moltiplicano le associazioni di appassionati di cinema, molte delle quali confl uiscono nella Federazione dei Cineclub Italiani (Fedic). I nostri primi registi, quelli del dopoguerra, i “pio-nieri” (Nando Scanu, Bruno Ricci, Silvio Bredo, Pinuccio Fara, Arturo Usai, Aldo Widmar, Domenico Arru, Benito Ca-stangia) aderiscono al Neorealismo e realizzano, su pelli-cole 16 millimetri, brevi fi lm sulla vita in città, girati per le vie di Sassari e Alghero, e altri, più ambiziosi, ambientati nelle campagne, tra i pastori, o impegnati in un’indagine sociale del banditismo. Per il Cineclub, fi n dalle origini, il ci-nema è uno strumento importante di conoscenza culturale e deve essere condiviso con quante più persone possibile. Per questo motivo, negli anni Cinquanta del Novecento abbiamo collaborato al programma di alfabetizzazio-ne culturale della Società Umanitaria di Cagliari, culminato nella fondazione della Cineteca Sarda. Oggi, oltre sessant’anni dopo il primo “ciak”, continuiamo con la passione di sempre ad alternare la realizzazione di corto-metraggi alla promozione di rassegne e all’impegno nelle scuole. Dal 2006 organizziamo il “Sardinia Film Festival”, il più importante concorso internazionale dedicato ai cor-tometraggi in Sardegna, che tra i numerosi riconoscimenti può vantare i premi di rappresentanza della Presiden-za della Repubblica, del Senato e della Camera. Nel 2011, per festeggiare i sessant’anni di attività, abbiamo inaugurato una Mediateca, la prima aperta a Sassari, dove vengono catalogati e conservati i corti di tutte le edi-zioni del Sardinia Film Festival insieme alle opere dei più importanti registi mondiali, e “Spazio cinema: cinema da fare, cinema da vedere”, un laboratorio didattico per i ragazzi che vogliono imparare i mestieri del set.

The Cineclub Sassari Fedic is a cultural association that, in addition to organize the Sardinia Film Festival, deals with production, storage and spreading of fi lms to the public. It was born in the middle of the last century (1951), at that time throughout Italy cinema fans’ associations were multiplying. Many of them were going to converge in the Italian Federation of Film Clubs (Fedic). The fi rst directors, the “pioneers” (Nando Scanu, Bruno Ricci, Silvio Bredo, Pinuccio Fara, Arturo Usai, Aldo Widmar, Domenico Arru, Benito Ca-stangia), joined to Neo-realism and made, on fi lms 8, s8 and 16 mm, short movies about city’s life, which was shooting in the streets of Sassari and Alghero, and about shepherds or banditry phenomenon. Cineclub has always seen cinema as means of cultural know-ledge; ; therefore, cinema has to be shared as much as possible. For this reason, in the 50’s we collaborated on the program of cultural education of the “Società Umanitaria” of Cagliari, project culminated in the founding of the “Cineteca Sarda” ( Sardinian Film Library). Today, more than sixty years after the fi rst ‘ciak’, we go on to making short fi lms, promote festivals and work in schools. Since 2006, moreover, we organi-ze the “Sardinia Film Festival”, the most important Sardinia’s International competition dedicated to short fi lms which has been awarded the representative prize of the Presidency of the Republic, the Pre-sidency of the Senate and the Chamber of Depu-ties. In 2011, in occasion of the 60th year of activity’s celebration, we have opened the fi rst Film Library in Sassari (where the all editions’ short fi lms of Sardinia Film Festival are catalogued and stored as well as wor-ks of the most important world’s fi lmmakers) and an educational workshop for kids who want to learn how to work on the set, called “Spazio cinema: cinema da fare, cinema da vedere”.

Volete rivedere i cortometraggi di questa e delle edizioni passate del Sardinia Film Festival, insieme a tanti altri fi lm italiani e internazionali? Li trovate tutti nella Mediateca del Cineclub. Fiction, do-cumentari, video-arte, animazione: li abbiamo rac-colti e catalogati nella nostra sede di via Bellini, a Sassari. La mediateca, la prima aperta in città, è un luogo di documentazione per gli appassionati di cinema e per gli studiosi, particolarmente utile in una città come la nostra, sede di un’Università e di un’Accademia di Belle Arti che dedicano tanto spazio ai linguaggi visivi. La mediateca è diventa-ta uno strumento importante anche per le scuole e per le associazioni. Fin dai primi mesi di apertura, insegnanti e operatori hanno trovato nei nostri archivi idee e sostegno per organizzare rassegne dedicate a tematiche importanti. La mediateca, infatti, è nata con una forte vocazione sociale, dal momento che è stata aperta in un quartiere peri-ferico molto popolato, con un’alta percentuale di studenti, ma da sempre carente di off erte culturali. Siamo partiti con un capitale iniziale di 10mila titoli che continua a crescere di anno in anno. Nel nostro archivio (online al sito www.cineclubsassari.com) trovate le tendenze del cinema amatoriale più re-cente e le opere di registi esordienti, insieme alla fi lmografi a completa dei grandi registi mondiali e a libri e a riviste dedicati al grande schermo. Al Ci-neclub pensiamo anche ai giovanissimi. Per loro c’è “Spazio Cinema: cinema da fare, cinema da vedere”, un laboratorio dove i ragazzi sono, di vol-ta in volta, spettatori di rassegne cinematografi che adatte alla loro età e “apprendisti dei mestieri del set”. Abbiamo trasformato il Cineclub in una casa di produzione in miniatura con spazi dedicati alle riprese e altri al montaggio dei fi lm. E c’è anche un’area riservata agli strumenti che hanno prece-duto il cinematografo, con lanterne magiche e altre meraviglie.

Would you like to watch again short fi lms from the current and the former editions of the Sardinia Film Festival and also many other fi lms both italian than international? You can fi nd them all in Cine-club’s fi lm library in via Bellini 7, Sassari. There are fi ction, documentaries, video art and animation fi lms. It’s the fi rst fi lm library in Sassari and it can be considered a space of documentation for movie fans and scholars. It is a very important thing because in our city there is a University and an Academy of Fine Arts that are very interested in visual arts. The me-dia library has become an important instrument for schools and associations. From the beginning, tea-chers and cultural operators found, in our archives, ideas and support to plan fi lm festivals with a social background. In fact, the fi lm library was born with a strong social vocation, because it was opened in a highly populated suburb with many students, but lacking in cultural off ering. We started with 10,000 titles but they continue to grow from year to year. In our archive (online: www.cineclubsassari.com) you can fi nd latest non-professional cinema trends and debutant fi lmmakers’ works, the complete fi l-mography of the world’s great directors, books and magazines dedicated to the cinema. The Cineclub also thinks to the kids: “Spazio Cinema: cinema da fare, cinema da vedere”, a workshop where they can watch fi lms suitable to their age and learn how to work on the ‘set’. We turned the Cineclub in a miniature studio production where the children can shoot and edit fi lms. It is also possible to see the ear-ly type of image projector ( the “magic lantern”) and other amazing things.

Per la nona edizione del Sardinia Film Festival, a Sassari dal 23 al 28 giugno nel Polo didattico “Quadrilatero” di viale Mancini, abbiamo realizzato un programma fi tto di eventi, incontri, tantissimi fi lm legati all’attualità. Ma prima di tutto ci siamo fatti aggiornare il look da un gruppo di bambini che hanno realizzato per noi una splendida sigla in stop motion, nel corso di un laboratorio diretto per il Cineclub da Marco Testoni e Luigi Frassetto. La sigla apre le sei giornate di proiezioni, a ingresso libero, durante le quali vedremo i 230 cortome-traggi in concorso (selezionati tra i quasi 800 iscritti) provenienti da circa 60 Nazioni. Sono in maggioranza lavori di registi giovani, tanti al debutto, realizzati in gran parte nel biennio 2013-2014. Molti raccontano la precarietà del lavoro, l’amore, la paura e la voglia di futuro di giovani e meno giovani. Non mancano, nell’anno dei Mondiali e del venten-nale del Gay Pride, i corti sul calcio e sull’identità sessuale. Quest’anno il Quadrilatero è affi ancato, come sede del Festival, dall’Accademia di Belle Arti dove il 25,

il 26 e il 27 giugno saranno proiettati corti in concorso nelle sezioni Sperimentale, VideoArte e Animazione. All’interno di ciascuna sezione, una giuria di studenti e insegnanti nominerà i vincitori.Insieme alla Giuria dell’Accademia e alla Giuria uffi ciale del Festival (Malachi Bogdanov-regista, Simon Woods-produttore, Marco Asunis - operatore culturale), ci sono anche la Giuria degli Studenti di Scienze Politiche e la Giuria Kids (minori di 13 anni). Quest’ultima premierà il miglior corto tra quelli pro-iettate il 25 giugno alla Biblioteca Comunale di Sassa-ri, durante un laboratorio coordinato da Marta Pala. Al Festival hanno grande importanza gli eventi spe-ciali.Quest’anno proponiamo la prima regionale di 140, la strage dimenticata di Manfredi Lucibello; il corto vincitore dei David di Donatello 2014, 37’4S di Adria-no Valerio; il documentario Thymos del docente dell’Accademia di Belle Arti, Vincenzo Boscarino; una selezione di corti di fi ne anno degli allievi dell’acca-demia, i corti realizzati da “Moviementu-Rete Cinema Sardegna; un omaggio, a cura della Ficc, al cineteca-rio Fabio Masala.

The IX Edition of the Sardinia Film Festival take place, from June 23 to June 28, in the University’s learning centre “Quadrilatero”, Viale Mancini, Sassari. The SFF program will be full of events, meetings and many fi lms about current events.The festival theme was produced in stop-motion by chil-dren which took part in the Cineclub’s workshop directed by Marco Testoni and Luigi Frassetto.The six days of screenings are free admission. The short fi lms, which come from around 60 countries, will be 230 (selected from the 800 subscribers).Most of them are works of young fi lmmakers, made between 2013-2014.Many tell about job insecurity, love, fear and desire of “future” .On the occasion of FIFA World Cup and 20th Anniversary of Gay Pride Day there will be shorts about football and sexual identity.This year, SFF has one more venue: the Academy of Fine Arts, where a selection of Experimental, VideoArt and Ani-mation movies will be screened on June 25, 26 and 27.Just here, a jury of students and teachers will designate the winners for these sections.Besides the Academy of Fine Arts jury and the SFF Offi cial

Il 12 dicembre 1994 moriva Fabio Masala, fondatore della Cineteca Sarda e direttore della Società Umanitaria di Cagliari. Nel corso di mezzo secolo, in Sardegna diverse sono state le categorie sociali e le generazioni che si sono incrociate con le innumerevoli attività formative sviluppate dalla Società Umanitaria e da Fabio Masala. A vent’anni dalla sua scomparsa, la IX edizione del Sardinia Film Festival (SFF) si apre in modo simbolico ricordando questa straordinaria figura di ‘intellettuale organi-co’, che ha lasciato una impronta indelebile nel mondo della cultura e dell’associazionismo cinemato-grafico internazionale. Fu proprio infatti Fabio Masala, insieme in particolare a Filippo Maria De Sanctis, Riccardo Napolitano, Sebastiano Di Marco e Carlo Lizzani, ad essere tra i protagonisti della nascita della Carta dei Diritti del Pubblico, approvata nel 1987 durante il Congresso della International Federation of Film Societies (IFFS) a Tabor, nella vecchia Cecoslovacchia. Carta di Tabor ancora oggi fondamentale per la Federazione Italiana dei Circoli del Cinema (FICC) e le altre Associazioni Nazionali di Cultura Cinematografica per le pratiche ideali legate alla difesa dei diritti e dell’autoformazione del pubblico. Sarà proprio la FICC, attraverso il suo Centro Regionale Sardo, a curare questa importante parte introduttiva del SFF con diverse testimonianze che ricorderanno la fondamentale figura di Fabio Masala.

Fabio Masala, Cineteca Sarda founder and director of the Humane Society of Cagliari, died on Decem-ber 12th, 1994. In Sardinia, in the course of half a century, different social classes and generations crossed educational activities developed by the Humane Society and Fabio Masala. Twenty years after his death, Sardinia Film Festival remembers his indelible contribution in international film culture. Masala, together with Filippo Maria De Sanctis, Riccardo Napolitano, Sebastiano Di Marco, Carlo Lizzani and others, wrote the "Bill of Rights of Audience", which was approved in 1987 by Congress of the International Federation of Film Societies (IFFS) in Tabor ( ex- Czechoslovakia). This document, which concerns protection of the rights and self-education of the audience, is still crucial for the Italian Federation of Film Societies (FICC) and other national associations of film culture. Because of this, during the opening night of the Sardinia Film Festival, the FICC, through its local centre, will remember the important figure of Fabio Masala.

AL SFF 2014

La nona edizione del Sardinia Film Festival riserva una particolare atten-zione al pubblico dei più piccoli, inserendo in programma proiezioni speciali per bambini e ragazzi e laboratori didattici, resi possibili anche grazie alla collabora-zione con due importanti realtà cittadine come la Biblioteca Comunale e la Uisp Sassari e i giovani talenti del panorama cinematografico della città. Queste iniziative riflettono l’impegno che il Cineclub Sassari Fedic porta avanti da diversi anni nella promozione della cultura cinematografica presso le nuove generazioni, con un particolare interesse verso il mondo dell’infanzia. Lo Spazio cinema del Cineclub, che ospita una preziosa collezione di strumenti ottici del periodo del precinema e delle origini, oltre alla Mediateca del cortometraggio, ha accolto numerose classi delle scuole primarie della città, coinvolgendo gli alunni nei progetti C’era una volta il cinema e Telegiornale improvvisato

PICCOLI CINESPLORATORI IN CITTA’Un’altra novità di quest'anno è la collabo-razione tra il festival e la Uisp Sassari che, nell'ambito del progetto "Estate Bimbi" - in programma per i mesi di giugno e luglio - ospiterà il ciclo di laboratori "Il cine-sploratore ", a cura di Marta Pala, un percorso di educazione alla multiculturali-tà attraverso l’educazione all’immagine audiovisuale.

Grazie al laboratorio Esperimenti animati ! - svoltosi l’11, 12 e 13 giugno - la presenza dei bambini si respirerà durante tutto il festival, infatti la sigla di apertura di ogni giornata è il frutto del lavoro del gruppo di piccoli creativi che guidati da due giovani creativi – il videomaker Marco Testoni e il musicista Luigi Frassetto – hanno dato vita a un video di anima-zione in stop motion con le loro idee visive e sonore.

La sezione speciale SFF KIDS propone una selezione di corto-metraggi, di animazione, fiction e documentario, attraverso cui i piccoli conosceranno le storie dei loro coetanei di tutto il mondo, dal Burkina Faso all’India, passando per bizzarri mondi marini e le scogliere atlantiche: il corto più votato riceverà il premio Kids nella serata di chiusura del festival.

Il Sardinia Film Festival è a Villanova Monteleone dal 21 al 23 agosto per la seconda edizione del “Premio Villanova Monteleone per il Documentario”. Dopo il successo dell’anno scorso, anche questa estate il pubblico potrà rivivere l’esperienza esaltante di vedere i documentari di alcuni dei più interessanti giovani registi italiani, incontrare gli autori e partecipare alle conversazioni con gli ospiti. Tutto questo nell’incantevole centro storico tardo medievale di Villanova Monteleone, che per tre giorni si trasforma in un palcoscenico sotto le stelle. Il fascino del cinema anche quest’anno sarà un richiamo in più per i turisti che trascorrono le vacanze a Villanova Monteleone, attratti dalla bellezza del suo paesaggio naturale, delle sue piazzette e stradine in trachite, e dall’atmosfera stimolante che i documentari sanno suscitare.

Sardinia Film Festival is in Villanova Monteleone from 21st to 23rd August for the second edition of the “Villanova Monteleone for Documentary Award”. Last year, the debut of the prize came out successful, so this summer the audience will be able to live through that exciting experience again. They will have the opportunity to watch documentaries made by some of the most interesting young Italian directors, meet the authors and have talks with the festival guests. All this in the charming, medieval centre of Villanova Monteleone, that changes itself in an “under the stars cinema” for three days. Also this summer, cinema is going to fascinate the tourists that come to Villanova Monteleone, attracted by the beauty of its landscape, by its small squares and cobblesto-ned streets, and by the exciting atmosphere drawn by documentary movies.

L’idea che è alla base di Thymos, sulle cose della vita, nasce dalla curiosità di indagare e di fissare, come se idealmente potesse esistesse una sorta di topografia dei sentimenti, quelle questioni con le quali quotidianamente ci misuriamo (la vita, la morte, il bene, il male etc…), temi credo non sempre del tutto oggettivi ma subordinati alla cultura che inevitabilmente li produce. Ecco allora che la parola diventa, non solo necessaria, ma l’unico mezzo di indagine per svelare quello che di più intimo c’è in ognuno di noi e da qui la necessità della totale assenza sotto qualsiasi forma (domande, immagini, commenti etc.) di un “io" narrante che possa suggerire, alterare, o guidare i protagonisti intervistati. Un tentativo, dunque, che da un lato cerca di muovere un flusso di coscienza/conoscenza collettiva verso la ricerca di quei significati che guidano il nostro essere qui e ora e che dall’altro prova a trasformare le parole in immagini e i volti in suoni per guardare in faccia la nostra esistenza. Cosa c'è di meglio allora del cinema - che, come dice Pasolini, "non è pura immagine ma una tecnica audiovisiva in cui la parola ha la stessa importanza dell'immagine" - per attivare questa visone?

The idea that is the basis of "Thymos, Sulle Cose della Vita", was born from the curiosity to investigate and quantify, if, in an ideal world, a sort topography of feeling is possible, matters which we face daily (life, death, the good , the bad etc..), issues that I believe are not always objective but subordinate to the culture that inevitably produces them. So, the word becomes, not only necessary, but the only way of investigating what is most intimate in each of us and from here the total lack, in whatever form, (questions, images, comments,etc...) of a "I" narrator that can suggest, alter or guide the main characters interviewed. An attempt ,therefore, that the one hand tries to move a flow of consciousness/collective knowledge towards discovering those meanings that guide our common sense of " being here and now" and that on the other hand try to transform words into images and faces in sounds to look at our existence in the face. What is better than cinema, "which", as Pasolini said, "isn't purely images but an audiovisual tecnique in which the word has the same importance as the image", to achieve this vision?

Lo scorso anno, mentre alcuni film sardi si segnalava-no in tutto il mondo come opere fra le più innovative e apprezzate del cinema Italiano, gli operatori della Sardegna, avvertivano un crescente disinteresse delle istituzioni regionali nei confronti del cinema. Per questo è nata l’associazione "Moviementu": Rete-Cinema-Sardegna". Il suo scopo è combattere l’indifferenza e permettere a questo territorio di continuare a mostrarsi e rappresentarsi in modo libero, originale, indipendente e profondo, creando allo stesso tempo un tessuto economico certo e vigoroso intorno al settore. L'attività cinematografica e audiovisiva ha un valore culturale e economico come dice anche Legge Regionale Cinema del 2006, di cui si chiede la piena attuazione con adeguate risorse e con efficaci strumenti esecutivi. Fare cinema favorisce, occupazione, imprenditorialità e legami di stretta relazione con altri settori, genera modelli si sviluppo virtuosi che vedono la cultura unita al territorio come un valore economico di spinta e rilancio. Sono coinvolte risorse umane e professionali, si attraggono investimenti, si sviluppa creatività e libertà espressiva otre che innovazione, ricerca e sperimentazione. Moviementu, che conta già quasi 200 soci, è nata proprio, al Sardinia Film Festival, nel giugno del 2013. Da allora molto è stato fatto: campagne di sensibilizza-zione, politica a favore del settore, progettazione, è nata una pagina Facebook e un sito internet sul quale i soci possono registrarsi e inserire il proprio curriculum. CHI SIAMO I MERCOLEDÍDI MOVIMENTU

The Association"Moviementu: Rete-Cinema-Sardegna" was born in June 2013 (during the Sardinian Film Festival) as reaction of cinema workers at lack of interest of the Sardinian institutions. Today it has almost 200 members. Its purpose is to support Sardinian cinema and develop the sector. The cinema is important both culturally and economically as the Regional Law Cinema of 2006 says and of which the Assoiation calls for the full implementation. The cinema creates employment and entrepreneurship that promote economic relaunch. It involves human and professio-nal resources, attracts investments, develops creativity and freedom of expression as well as innovation, research and experimentation. Much has been done (but there is much still to do) thanks to Moviementu: awarness campaign, planning, a Facebook page and a website where members can enter their CV. All this to create a business-oriented networking service.

The "Wednesday of Moviementu"The "Wednesday of Moviementu" are meetings, which take place in Cagliari from mid-May, to talk about cinema and to confront each others. There has been talk of "Cinema and Places" seeing "L’architetto verde" (work in progress) by Marta Anatra and "Slow Action" by Ben Rivers to discuss on how to tell a place.There has been discuss about the "Body of Author": the author who shows himself in his films thank to "Simone Lecca e il cinema dell’in-visibile" by Simone Lecca, "Chinotto" by Marco Antonio Pani and the performance of 1970s by Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, and Bas Jan Ader.And at last, there has been talk about "Obstinate Memory" in films as "I morti di Alos" by Daniele Atzeni and "Le dossier 332" by Noelle Pujol : memory (that) allows us to create visions and emotions.

I Mercoledi di Moviementu, sono gli incontri di vita associativa si tengono a Cagliari da metà maggio. Ci si vede per parlare di cinema e per stare insieme in modo conviviale, ci si conosce, ci si confronta sul proprio e sull’altrui lavoro. Si à parlato di Cinema e Luoghi vedendo L’architetto verde (work in progress) della nostra Marta Anatra messo in relazione con Slow Action del filmmaker inglese Ben Rivers per discutere sul come raccontare un luogo cercandone lo spirito. Si è ragionato sul Corpo dell’autore: l’autore che si mostra nei suoi film. Marina Abramo-vic, Vito Acconci e Bas Jan Ader ci hanno introdotti nelle performance degli anni Settanta. I loro lavori sono stati messi a confronto con i meandri concettua-li del nostro Simone Lecca e il suo visionario Simone Lecca e il cinema dell’in-visibile e con Chinotto, un “poetico” racconto/lettera in prima persona di Marco Antonio Pani. Si è discusso della Memoria ostinata che si mostra all’interno dei film e che ci consente di produrre visioni e emozioni. Come nel film I morti di Alos del nostro Daniele Atzeni dove il materiale d’archivio diventa vivo in una rinnova produzione di senso. Il film è stato messo in relazione con Le dossier 332 della filmmaker e videoartista francese Noelle Pujol nel quale invece la memoria emerge dalla lettura delle lettere sulla sua condizione di bimba adottata, lette da lei stessa in funzione di traccia sonora. In questi tre primi incontri abbiamo trovato e ritrovato il piacere di stare insieme e di parlare di cinema, mettendoci in gioco e di vivendo intensi momenti di confronto e di conoscenza.
