Final Consonant Deletion

Final consonant deletion occurs when a child omits the final consonant in his/her words when speaking. It often affects all consonants as opposed to a particular consonant.

The following three lessons were designed for you to do with your child at home to assist him/her in correcting this problem. Each lesson follows the same format as the previous lesson.

The first picture page is an auditory discrimination page in which minimal pair pictures are presented to contrast with your child’s error pattern. In other words it shows both the correct and incorrect production of the word.

The rest of the lesson provides auditory bombardment of the target sound (the /p/, /t/, or /k/).

These lessons are meant to be both enjoyable and productive. Please give your child positive feedback as you both work together. Hopefully, through observation, we will begin to see improvement. Please send your questions, comments, and response to the lessons to me at [email protected]

Thank you.

Practice activities for the final /p/ sound

Ask your child to climb up stairs saying “up” for each step up.

Play with toy jets, airplanes, and rockets saying “up” as the vehicle goes higher.

Blow bubbles and ask your child to pop them, saying “pop” for each one.

Make popcorn. Have your child say “pop” as it pops or as he/she eats it.

Have a snack time or tea party asking your child to pass the cups, saying “cup” for each one.

The following link contains additional activities to use for final /p/ deletion.
