Message from Roz Robinson Cat Haven CEO

Hi Everyone

Welcome to the spring edition of Cat Chat. Whilst everyone is glad to the see the end of what seems to have been a very long, cold and wet winter in Perth, spring is a bitter sweet time for us at Cat Haven. We know the infl ux of kittens is just around the corner and that it will continue long into 2019. We have to increase staffi ng levels to cope with the increased numbers on site with kittens being particularly labour intensive, requiring daily weighing and monitoring to ensure they are thriving. Days become longer for our staff and when many industries are winding down for the Christmas/New Year break, we are shifting up a gear and heading into overdrive. It is not just the toll this time of year takes on our staff, but the impact all of this has on our fi nances. We are tackling a community problem, but constantly worry about where our future funding is coming from and how we can raise more funds in tough economic times to keep saving the large number of cats and kittens we do. We will not compromise on our care and compassion when it comes to saving cats. If we can save a cat or kitten’s life, regardless of the hard work and vet treatment, we will do so, it’s as simple as that. As we come into the season of goodwill, please stop and think about the work we do, 365 days of the year. Please consider making a donation to our Christmas Appeal, or ask family and friends to gift us instead of buying you more “stuff” to clutter cupboards. Make a New Year’s resolution to give up one coffee a week, or even one a month, and become a regular donor - all donations $2 and over are tax deductible. When I am asked how we most need help, the number one thing I always answer with is ‘funding’ to help us to continue to be here for these amazing creatures we all love and care about so much.

After the runaway success of our fi rst venture into operating a Pop Up Shop earlier this year, management at Watertown Brand Outlet have provided us with another amazing opportunity to run a Pop-Up Shop. With many dedicated hours from the Felines and Fashion volunteers, the second Pop Up Shop opened on 3rd November. So far this year, the pre-loved clothing and accessories which have been so generously donated, has raised over a whopping $70k, and the year’s not over yet! Thank you to everyone concerned for making this happen again.

If you do buy Christmas presents, please consider coming down to Cat Haven to purchase some of the most amazing giftware you’ve seen, some of it is unavailable in other retail outlets in WA.

And lastly this time of year is one for refl ection, a time to look back on our achievements and failures over the year; how we see the next year and what will be thrown at us. It is also time to thank everyone involved with us, for making Cat Haven the place where every cat gets a second chance. For all the volunteers who come in and clean litter trays, dirty bowls, washing laundry and scrub cat condos. For all the volunteers and members who work outside of Cat Haven fundraising or driving for us. For the gift wrappers who will wrap some weird and wonderful presents at Karrinyup Shopping Centre up until the shops close on Christmas Eve. For the foster carers who have sleepless nights willing that fading kitten to hang on to its fragile little life. There are so many facets to what our volunteers do and we are so lucky to have the commitment of so many passionate people. To all the staff and volunteers who freeze in winter and fry in summer. Thank you all so very much – it never seems enough to say thanks for all you do, and it is never said often enough either.

So please enjoy this festive season with those you love and care for, including those with 4 legs! From all of us here at Cat Haven be safe, take care on the roads, and enjoy. See you all in 2019.

Kind Regards,

Roz Robinson CEO

Cat Haven is rescuing and rehoming over a thousand more cats a year thanks to our innovative programs but this is costing us far too much to continue on a regular basis. We have come too far in our quest to reduce the rate of euthanasia in shelter cats from 70% to just over 10% and we won’t go back to euthanasing healthy cats simply because we don’t have enough money.

But we desperately need your help to keep this focus - please make a regular monthly donation from your bank, credit card or payroll – as little as $10 a month can make a huge difference.

Lukkie to be Alive! Lukkie is defi nitely one of the luckiest kittens in WA ….

Spring has sprung and the fi rst of the very young kittens are arriving at Cat Haven, and one of them had a very narrow escape last month. She was found in the middle of Leach Highway after narrowly escaping being hit by a truck! Aptly named Lukkie, she was very frightened and shaking when she fi rst arrived at Cat Haven but she was placed into a loving foster home to be cared for until she was ready for adoption.

Once she reached her ideal weight at only nine weeks old, Lukkie was adopted immediately from one of Cat Haven’s External Adoption Centres, City Farmers O’Connor, where she had a queue of people wanting to take her home. Lukkie also had a genetic advantage over many cats as grey cats are always the fi rst to be adopted from Cat Haven!

Did You Know? The most adoptable cat is one that is a de-sexed, two month old blue calico cat called Cookie, adopted on the weekend!

At Cat Haven and in shelters around the world, research shows that people prefer adopting kittens over cats and sadly at this time of year, many older cats get overlooked for rehoming due to the sheer number of cute kittens we have at the shelter. We have found that grey kittens and cats are the easiest to adopt out, and black cats can be the most diffi cult.

Studies show that overall it seems that colour does matter! According to a Priceonomics study in the US, tuxedo cats—meaning black with a white chest — get adopted at lower rates than any other colour. Grey cats and orange tabbies get adopted at the highest rates, and brown cats are more likely to get adopted than black cats.

A recent analysis was conducted by Joanne Lin, a student in Thinkful’s data science bootcamp, where she analysed animal shelter outcomes for nearly thirty thousand cats, using data made public by the Austin Animal Shelter in the US. This study allows us to understand which features matter most with respect to cat adoptions. The top fi ve predictive features for cat adoptions, in order of importance are:

Building brands.Transforming businesses.

Information about the study can be found online thanks to https://www.thinkful.com/blog/how-data-science-can-help-us-save-animals/

Whether the cat is desexed.1

Whether or not the cat had a name: 63% of cats with names were adopted with the most adoptable cat’s name being Cookie.

2

The age of the cat – two months was optimum.3

The colour and pattern of the cat’s coat – grey calico was most popular.4

What day of the week the adoption took place: 43% of cats adopted were rehomed on a weekend, with one in four fi nding homes on a Saturday.

Scratching is normal cat behaviour, serving to groom the front claws and leave markers of the cat’s presence. Cats may also scratch to stretch their muscles.

Vets from the Perth Cat Hospital provide advice about how to prevent cats from scratching in undesirable areas.

Proper training to scratch on appropriate surfaces combined with nail care can prevent cats from scratching in undesirable areas and causing damage in the home. So providing an attractive alternative scratching area, such as a scratching post, is the key to redirecting scratching away from undesirable areas.

The following information is pertinent in choosing a scratching post:

• Many cats prefer vertical scratching posts; some prefer horizontal ones.

• Vertical scratching posts must be sturdy and preferably tall enough for the cat to have a good stretch.

• Scratching materials preferred by most cats are wood, sisal rope, and rough fabric.

• Locate scratching posts near areas favoured by cats, such as windows or sleeping areas since cats often stretch and scratch upon waking.

• Feliscratch by Feliway is an exciting new product available to help make the scratching post more attractive to cats.

• Start training your new kitten or cat to use scratching posts when fi rst introduced to your home.

• If you have more than one cat at home, it is best to provide one scratching post per cat, and to treat each post with Feliscratch.

Cats return to favourite or chosen scratching sites, so motivate them to use the scratching post you select and avoid letting them use the furniture. This can be done by enticing your cat to the post upon waking, applying Feliscratch to the post, rubbing catnip on the post, and holding treats or toys partway up the post to encourage stretching and scratching. You can secure an appealing toy, such as feathers, at the top of the post. Rewards can be given at each step—as the cat approaches the post, touches it and fi nally scratches it. Never yell at or punish your cat.

If your cat already scratches in an undesirable area, talk to Cat Haven or one of Perth Cat Hospital’s veterinarians or veterinary nurses. They will help determine your cat’s likely preferences—for a vertical or horizontal scratching post, for the type of material that will draw the cat to the post, for the location of the post. You can then make or purchase posts of similar fabrics.

Place double-sided sticky tape on inappropriate areas and reward use of the post. This helps direct the cat tothe post. If necessary, the cat can be confi ned to an area where the scratching post is the only available scratching outlet. This establishes use of the scratching post and prevents inadvertent reinforcement for scratching off-limit household items.

Trim the tips of the nails every one or two weeks. If done correctly, this procedure is well accepted by most cats. Cat Haven and Perth Cat Hospital’s vet nurses are happy to show you how to do this safely. Introduce nail trimming as part of routine handling to kittens. Plastic nail caps, applied every four to six weeks, are an option for cats that are easy to handle. After trimming nail tips, fi ll the cap about a third of the way with adhesive, and fi t the cap over the nail. The soft plastic covers prevent furniture damage when the cat scratches. Declawing of cats is illegal in Australia and is not ethical.

Feliscratch by Feliway – a new product

Cats are naturally territorial and during scratching they leave both visual messages (the scratch mark) and invisible messages (pheromones from their paws). Feliscratch mimics these territory messages both by the blue colour when applied in lines on the scratching post, and by its components (pheromone analogue and catnip). This will encourage cats to use the post rather than other inappropriate locations for scratching.

Feliscratch is a blue liquid that comes in nine pipettes per box. One pipette is applied by making two to three lines along the post and then allowed to dry for fi ve minutes. For the fi rst week this is applied daily, and then again at the beginning of the third and fourth week. Whilst applying the contents of the pipette lay the post in a horizontal position over a sink or newspaper to prevent spillage onto surfaces below. Wait fi ve minutes before placing the post in an upright position again.

Improvements can be seen after one week, however it is recommended to complete the full four week treatment. You can buy Feliway products at Perth Cat Hospital and at many vet clinics.

Beware the Dangers of Essential Oils

In previous issues of Cat Chat we have talked about how lilies and other common houseplants are extremely toxic to cats.

Essential oils are organic constituents of plants that contribute to fragrance and which are extracted from plants by distillation or cold pressing.

These oils are rapidly absorbed both orally and through the skin and are then metabolized in the liver. Cats lack an enzyme in their liver that is essential for the metabolism and elimination of essential oils. This means they are toxic for cats. Cats are also very sensitive to phenols and phenolic compounds, which can be found in some essential oils. The higher the concentration of the essential oil, the greater the risk to the cat.

Essential oils that are known to cause poisoning in cats include oil of wintergreen, oil of sweet birch, citrus oil (d-limonene), pine oils, Ylang Ylang oil, peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, pennyroyal oil, clove oil, eucalyptus oil, and tea tree oil.

Symptoms that develop depend on the type of oil involved in the exposure and can include drooling, vomiting, tremors, ataxia (wobbliness), respiratory distress, low heart rate, low body temperature, and liver failure. Consult your vet immediately if you are concerned about your cat being exposed to essential oils.

List of toxic essential oils courtesy of https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/blog/essential-oils-cats/

If you are thinking of buying a purrfect present of a Christmas candle or aromatherapy oils, beware - many essential oils in candles and diffusers can be highly toxic to cats!

Great stocking fi llers this Christmas for the cat (and car) lovers in your life! Only $10 each and all proceeds go directly to the cats at Cat Haven.

Curious Cat Behaviour One of a cat’s favourite things to do with their tail is to wrap it around their paws. It happens when they’re sitting upright and curled up looking cosy on the couch. It’s a seemingly innocent gesture, but the placement of their tail carefully over their paws isn’t an accident. Here’s what it could mean.

Cold Weather

Like when you tuck your toes under a blanket or curl them under your body to keep warm, cats use their tails to help conserve body heat. Even with all that fur, cats are most comfortable when the temperature is at least 10 degrees Celsius. Once it drops below freezing, they’re at risk of hypothermia and even frostbite. You’ll be able to tell if your cat is wrapping their tail in order to keep warm by looking at other body signals. According to Veterinary News, cats that are cold crouch low and close to the ground. They fold their ears against their heads, cover their noses and do their best to be as small as possible. If they’re sitting upright, they’re leaving their ears, nose and belly exposed, so they’re most likely not cold.

Avoidance Behaviour

If you’re able to rule out winter weather, a cat with their tail draped over their paws could be putting on a passive display of evasion. It’s their way of saying they’d prefer to be left alone. They’re relaxed and comfortable as they are and they’d rather their humans not get in the way. They’re not in the kind of bad mood that’ll warrant a swat or hiss if you get too close, but they’re also not inviting attention. Before you take it personally, this apathetic gesture doesn’t mean the cat dislikes the people or animals around them. Certain cats value alone time and occasionally prefer to observe their surroundings without direct interaction. If that’s the case, respect their space. When they’re ready to join in, they’ll let you know with a change in body language.

Nerves

Sometimes, the tail over the paws is a combination of passive evasion and a show of nerves. There’s a good chance an alert cat sitting upright with their tail wrapped around their body is watching something they’re not exactly comfortable with. It could be the dog getting into trouble on the other side of the room or their owner coming at them with a brush. The tail placed strategically around their body creates a physical barrier to separate the cat from whatever’s causing them concern. Consider the tail over the paws to be similar to a person crossing their arms. In human body language, crossed arms are a classic defensive manoeuvre. People cross their arms when they feel threatened, nervous and generally uncomfortable. A shy person might cross their arms in the middle of a crowded room or when someone tells them something they don’t want to hear. Cats respond similarly to humans and wrapping their tail around their body is a way of saying they’re not going to get aggressive, but they’re also not completely happy.

Thanks to our Patron, Hon Michael Mischin MLC, and the enthusiasm of his offi ce for the Cat Welfare Society Inc and Cat Haven, work has begun on the preparation an offi cial history of the Cat Welfare Society Inc. Although the project is complex and currently in its early days, it is hoped that – at least in time for our 60th Anniversary in 2021 – the venture might result in the production of a commemorative booklet which can be distributed at Cat Haven and through our other community activities.

In any event, highlights of the history will feature on our website in due course.

To assist in ensuring that (within the constraints of times past) the history is as accurate and meaningful as possible, the researchers are seeking access to any and all printed material (and other memorabilia) related to the Cat Welfare Society Inc and/or Cat Haven over the years and, of course, the writings and thoughts of the thousands of volunteers and offi ce holders who have served us over the 57 years since the Cat Welfare Society Inc was formed in 1961.

If you have any such literature, photographs – or just anecdotes in your head – the history’s researchers want to hear from you!

Message from the offi ce of our Patron, the Hon Michael Mischin MLC

The Cat Haven Animal Support Program (ASP) was established and funded thanks to a very kind donor who wants to help us fi nd homes for some of our older cats, shy cats or cats with ongoing medical issues. Our donor’s invaluable funding of the program ensures that people who adopt ASP cats will not have the fi nancial burden of paying for their adopted cat’s ongoing treatment by our Cat Haven vet.

The ASP helped Sid fi nd his new forever home in time for Christmas! Poor Sid was found as a stray at Domas Nursery in Hacket Gully. He was picked up by a local ranger and brought to Cat Haven. Sadly Sid didn’t have a microchip so no owner could be contacted. He was put on the Lost and Found website but unfortunately nobody came forward to reclaim him.

Sid is very talkative and you usually hear him before you see him! He’s a very affectionate, friendly boy who loves company. Sid was given a blood test due to his age and the fact that he was looking a bit on the thin side. The results showed high levels of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Urea nitrogen is one of the waste products removed from the blood by the kidneys and higher than normal BUN levels may be a sign that the kidneys aren’t working effi ciently. Sid was put onto a Hill’s K/D diet which he must remain on for life. This dry food has been designed to give the following benefi ts:

• Kidney workload is reduced from reduced protein levels.

• Reduced phosphorous levels minimise stress on the kidneys.

• B-complex vitamins compensate for those lost during urination.

• Added antioxidants make for a healthy immune system.

He was also started on Semintra; a medication that reduces protein in the urine and treats high blood pressure. He is currently receiving this daily with food and he will need to return to the Cat Haven clinic every three months to have a blood test and his blood pressure checked.

Under the ASP, Sid is entitled to free Cat Haven veterinary consults and medication in relation to chronic kidney disease and he will also receive 12.5% discount on Hill’s K/D biscuits from the Cat Haven retail shop.

Sid relaxed in foster care for four months where he was well and truly pampered and the great news is that he was adopted to his new forever home in early November!

In 2016, Dan fostered a ten month old cat called Xena from Cat haven. She stayed with Dan for just over three months and was a real bundle of life. Xena was then adopted out to her forever home in Pinjarra, but as she was such a lively cat, she managed to escape her new human’s house after only a few days when the garage door was left open.

Her new owner put up some fl yers and dropped some in mailboxes in her area. She contacted the local pound, ranger, council, RSPCA and vets and put up ads on the Lost and Found websites including Gumtree. Dan also put up some ads and went down to Pinjarra to help call for Xena but sadly they had no luck.

So after no news since November 2016, in October this year, the ranger in Pinjarra called Xena’s owner saying that he had caught Xena lurking around a camp ground nearby. Luckily, her new owner had registered her details on the cat’s microchip so the ranger was able to fi nd out the owner’s contact details quickly. Unfortunately, during these two year’s Xena’s owner’s circumstances had changed and she could no longer take her, but Dan agreed to take Xena back to his home to get her back on track.

So…after nearly two years running wild she’s coming back to live with her original foster carer Dan!

“She was a little feral at fi rst but we’ve just got back from the Vetwest clinic in South Perth and Xena has a clean bill of health along with an updated vaccination. She immediately remembered us and the apartment and is back to ruling the house, and sleeping in exactly the same favourite spots.” Dan said.

Suffi ce to say, Dan has registered her change of ownership and contact details with AAR for her microchip to be up to date, and Xena is going to be an indoor cat from now on!

Story supplied by Dan Angove

Dear all at Cat Haven,

In December of 1996 a little kitten was born. This tiny kitten had calico colouring, with the biggest saucer eyes you’ve ever seen. She was left at the pens in front of Cat Haven sometime in February 1997 - another unwanted life.

As soon as I saw her in the pen full of other unwanted furry life where she tentatively came over on wobbly legs and licked my fi nger, I was in love! Her name was Jemima and she has been my companion, surrogate furry daughter for nearly 22 years.

Three weeks ago she passed away in my arms, a proud, beautiful, very intelligent feline who fi lled my life with unconditional love and companionship.

Jemima travelled with me everywhere, from the enclosed basket on my bicycle to paddle on Scarborough Beach in Western Australia and then travelled to the United Kingdom living in the Forrest of Dean where I discovered her love of horses. She was besotted and wanted to meet every one she saw; very hard for her human in tow who was frankly terrifi ed of them but when they bent down to sniff her, she was excitedly vocal.

She then moved into a stone cottage built in 1690, overlooking the Doomsday recorded village of Painswick in the Slad Valleys of The Cotswolds. Jemima discovered her love of hammock time with me and explored an old hunting Forrest. She joined me in a camper van around Britain and loved her adventures even though she didn’t much enjoy her walking harness, due to her human slave not being able to keep up.

All of these adventures would not have been possible without Cat Haven. I just want to THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of my broken heart for being there to save these precious bundles.

A Tribute to Jemima

Koala was put on to a metabolic diet to help decrease his weight however his biggest problem was a signifi cant heart murmur. Cat Haven veterinarians graded it as 4-5 (4+ is a high/signifi cant heart murmur) and we organised for Koala to have an ultrasound. The

ultrasound showed that he has mixed cardiomyopathy with hypertrophy and dilation. This means he has a disease of the heart muscle which makes it hard for the heart to deliver blood to the body and can lead to heart failure and in some instances, sudden death.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common form of heart disease in cats and occurs where there is an increase in the thickness of the muscular wall of the heart. This reduces the volume of blood within the heart and also prevents the heart muscle relaxing properly between contractions. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is where the muscular wall of the heart generally becomes thinner than

usual, the heart enlarges, and the heart muscle cannot contract effectively.

The lifespan for a cat with cardiomyopathy varies greatly from three months to three years as a guideline. We cannot say how long Koala may live for, however at present he is healthy in all other respects. Even though Koala’s condition is serious and progressive, he still deserves the love of a family and a chance at living his days out in comfort. As Koala is not showing any discomfort or signs of congestive heart failure, he is eligible for the Palliative Care Program, a part of the Animal Support Program. He will need to have a repeat ultrasound in six months’ time (April 2019) to monitor any progression of the disease. This will be covered by the Palliative Care Program.

Within half a day of being in the Cat Haven adoption sheds, Koala found a new family! Koala’s new owner was informed that it is important to monitor him for symptoms that may indicate a progression of his condition and that if this happens, he would need a vet appointment immediately. Under the Palliative Care Program Koala is entitled to free veterinary appointments at the Cat Haven clinic in relation to his heart condition.

Cat Haven’s First Palliative Cat Adoption – Koala Koala was surrendered to Cat Haven as his owners were moving away. They didn’t say why he couldn’t go with them or tell us much about his personality other than he was good with children. It didn’t take long for us to fi gure Koala out though. By the end of his fi rst day everybody was in love! He’s a big smooch who loves attention and also loves his food…he weighed in at 8kgs!

OsinOsin was brought in to Cat Haven as a stray and has been in foster care for a few weeks now. He is still a bit wary and jumpy after his hard life on the streets, but he loves a good head-butt and will insist on head scratches! Due to his life on the streets he is FIV +ve, so will need to be a strictly indoor cat and can only live with other FIV+ cats, or no cats at all. Osin is slowly learning how to play and though he is not a big fan of being picked up, he’ll tolerate it briefl y. He loves to eat, probably because he’s used to doing it tough, and prepare to be amazed by how loud his purr can be!

Volunteer Focus Hannah Boulton Kitty Matchmaker

If I were to describe my current volunteer role at Cat Haven in one sentence...Kitty matchmaker, matching cats with their furever families.

I became a volunteer at Cat Haven because…I’m a Leo so I am half cat. I felt obligated to help my own kind.

I am currently working on…Learning meowanese, or catspeak so I can interpret what the cat is saying to potential adopters.

The best part of my volunteer job is…Meeting so many cats! I wish I could live at Cat Haven. And speaking to so many cat lovers. Somehow we just get each other even without saying anything.

When I am not at Cat Haven I normally…Draw. I’m an animator in training.

On weekends I…Go to Japanese class!

My favourite holiday destination and why...Japan, I am a sucker for cute or ‘kawaii’ culture. Think Hello Kitty and Pikachu parades!

My signature dish…Two minute noodles. I wish I could cook!

My all-time favourite movie is…The Cat Returns.

One thing I want to do in my lifetime is…Make an Oscar winning animated movie.

Something no one knows about me is…I’m a terrible amateur drummer.

If I could be anyone dead or alive, it would be…Walt Disney

My biggest lesson in life is…To help others as much as I can and to be a voice for those who can’t speak.

If you are interested in volunteering at Cat Haven or organising a team from work to come down to Cat Haven, please contact: [email protected]

I chose to work at Cat Haven because…I wanted to be a part of something I feel very strongly about.

I am currently working on…End of month accounts.

In fi ve years from now I will be…Possibly a grandmother? (No pressure kids!)

The most interesting project I have worked on…Making my family tree into a movie

The best part of my job is…Meeting all the cats and kittens!

On weekends I like to…Spend time with family, write stories and songs, and read with my cats

My favourite holiday destination and why…London, love the history

My signature dish…Shepherd’s pie.

My all-time favourite movie is…Mulan

One thing I want to do in my lifetime is…Travel more

Something no one knows about me is…I am quite artistic

If I could spend time with anyone dead or alive, it would be…Lin Manuel Miranda
