QUESTIONNAIRE ON THE RANKING OF JOURNALS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO

HETERODOX ECONOMICS

Dear Colleague,

I am engaged in a research project on the ranking of journals that are relevant to the development of heterodox economics in terms of their research quality and their pluralism. As you are undoubtedly aware, the ranking of economic journals is a very controversial topic, largely in part because mainstream economists and economic associations use such rankings to diminish and dismiss the research of heterodox economists. Although a world without such rankings would be preferable to one with them, this is currently not an option. Heterodox economists in the United Kingdom, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Australia have to deal with such rankings on a daily basis since they are part of their government evaluation of the research activities in higher education. In addition, in countries such as the United States where such ‘official’ lists do not exist, they nevertheless circulate among economics departments and become part of the evaluation of faculty when hiring and promoting. One way to respond to these uses of ranking economics journals is to develop an alternative ranking of journals that are important to heterodox economics—numerous heterodox economists have told me that such a ranking would be quite useful to them when dealing with the dismissal of their research.

A methodologically sound ranking exercise consists of a bibliometric analysis which has already been done) and peer evaluation. The significance of peer evaluation is that it provides an insight into the similarities and differences among journals that is not possible with a bibliometric analysis. You are asked to evaluate up to 62 journals—which include generalist, specialist, and interdisciplinary journals--that heterodox economists think are important in terms of their contribution to the building of heterodox economics and to pluralism. Your responses will remain anonymous. Before marking your responses on the survey form, you may find it helpful to look over the full set of journals you are being asked to evaluate. Each journal is to be evaluates in terms of:

1. Research quality: it is defined as a journal’s contribution to building heterodox economics through developing specific heterodox economic knowledge and engaging with different heterodox approaches in a manner that integrates heterodox economic theory.

2. Pluralism: it is defined as critical engagement with mainstream ideas and arguments; pluralism is not about agreement or disagreement, but about engagement.

In the case that the aims and objectives of the journal are not relevant to promoting pluralism in economics, please select ‘Not Relevant’. For instance, if the journal is primarily directed towards promoting geography, sociology, or some other ‘non-economics area’, then select ‘Not Relevant’.
