Future Hindsight > Respond to This is the Lot19 Group Show created especially for the Castlemaine State Festival. The artists’ replies to this open-ended brief will be manifold and provocative. Make up your own mind, whilst exploring one of Castlemaine’s most enjoyable community arts spaces.

Lot19 is the largest and most enchanting artist enclave in Central Victoria. A workspace for 26 artists from diverse disciplines, their studios nestle amidst rambling, regenerated bush and semi-industrial surrounds. Lot19 hosts a multitude of contemporary events, including seasonal salons, music and art festivals, theatre, film, puppetry and a yearly outdoor sculpture prize. Recently Lot19 welcomed print collective Castlemaine Press,Trouble Magazine publishing house and Castlemaine Clay an open-access ceramics studio. To round out the multi-sensory experience, Papa’s Bar now compliments Mama’s Kitchen. All the artists are throwing open their studio doors and inviting you to peer behind the scenes of their creative worlds.

RICHARD BAXTER Memory DriftThe three large paintings that form the triptych Memory Drift allude to the mysterious drifting of time, change and perspective. Using imagery from central Victoria, the piece sits appropriately in the Hartcourt Heritage Centre Museum along with other new work. The centre piece was a finalist in the 2014 Sulman Prize in Sydney with the remaining pieces only completed recently. The artist will be present and working.

MICHELLE CULPITT: Sun StudioTent 29 presents ‘Sun Studio’ – an exhibition of anthotype photograms made at an old gold mine in the Chewton bushlands. Immersed in the environment: plants, tannin water from spring fed dams and solar rays are combined to frame (contain) nature. *The anthotype was one of the first photographic inventions whereby an image was created on an emulsion made from plants. A photogram captures the shadow of an object on a light sensitive surface.

In 2014, Rosemary and her partner, Bruce Mitchell, travelled more than 17,000 kilometres in the Australian outback. This exhibition features works inspired by that experience. Memories of sight and sound, colours and patterns evoke a feeling of belonging and are expressed in Rosemary’s work.

JOHN TOZER Places and Spaces – Old and New

John Tozer is a Master Photographer with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. His artistic focus is on landscapes, winning over 150 awards in local and international photography competitions. In 2011 John was AIPP Victorian Landscape Photographer of the Year.

This is John’s fifteenth exhibition, focusing on structures as near as Melbourne’s Webb Bridge and as far away as an Arctic Circle Whalers’ Hut, and illustrating the painterly style typical of his award winning work.

MICHAEL WOLFE Lost Horizons 1992-2015

Located in the historic Castlemaine Woollen Mill site, the Castlemaine Brewing Company Taproom presents a series of paintings by acclaimed local artist Michael Wolfe.

After returning from London in 1992, Michael began, and later abandoned, a series of works inspired by the Mark Rothko paintings in the Tate Modern. Twenty years later he revisits and completes the suite.

I’ve been painting the country around Castlemaine for the better part of 30 years and never tire of the rolling hills, granite outcrops, rhythms, textures and colours.

There’s order and geometry, but mostly wonderful chaotic confusion. It’s a beautiful, rugged, inspiring landscape which I love using as a backdrop and motif in my paintings.
