The Aspen non-catalytic wood stove feature a conventional non-catalytic combustion system that works like this:

Primary air enters the stove through an access hole in the back of the stove. The air is preheated as it is drawn through the interior walls of the stove. As this primary combustion air enters the firebox above the glass door, it effectively washes the glass, thus maintaining a cleaner view of the fire.

To achieve greater efficiency, secondary air enters the firebox bringing about the secondary phase of combustion. Secondary combustion reduces the amount of unburned gasses.

Standard Features:• Protective firebrick lining• Reversible 153 mm flue collar• Ashpan (not included in most other small wood burning stoves)• Thermostatically controlled air supply• I.R.-Coated Ceramic Glass• Outside air-ready• Top Plate Cooking Surface• Low height for fireplace installations• Bottom heat shield to accommodate standard hearth pad

Optional Accessories:• Clearance reducing rear heat shield• Chimney connection pipes

Cast Iron Wood Box

This is one of the most popular accessories. Our woodbox is useful and decorative. A piece of finely crafted cast iron furniture, its stylistic touches are drawn by the same artisans who design our stoves and fireplaces. Complete with latticework and shell motif, it’s fine addition to any room. It's the perfect way to store all the wood you need to keep your home warm and toasty.

Gloves

The men and women at our foundry handle hot, freshly poured iron every day and can spot a wimpy glove a mile away. They swear by these, so we’ve made them available to you. Made of tough two tone leather, these gloves are outstanding workhorses and perfect for loading your stove or moving rough logs.

Step 1: DESIGN - Aided by the latest computer design and manufacturing technology, master pattern makers refine every pattern by hand to ensure aesthetic detail and a precision fit.

Step 2: METALLURGICAL KNOW-HOW - Our iron is a carefully calibrated combination of elements

to assure the highest quality. This is maintained through hourly audits of the molten iron’s chemical make-up.

Step 3: A MOLD OF SAND - Our iron is poured into a mold of sand. The sand is the finest glacial sand in the world, and is precisely mixed with clay and sea coal to ensure its smoothness and cohesion. The sand is pressed against the pattern “tool” for each individual mold.

Step 4: THE POUR - At our foundry, computer control ensures the highest

quality and lasting beauty of our cast iron products. Without sophisticated control of the casting and enameling processes, it would not be Vermont Castings quality.

Step 5: EXTRA FINE SURFACE FINISH - Before enameling, a casting is pummeled with tiny shot, which actually strips a microscopically thin layer of iron off the casting. This is the preferred, Old World way to attain the smoothest surface possible and assure optimal enamel adhesion.

Choose from either Classic Black or matching porcelain enamel colors – available for Intrepid II and Encore.

Thermometer

Surface-mount magnetic thermometer is designed to work with all of our stoves. This stove thermometer allows for setting air intakes for appropriate combustion levels, and tells you when to reload or shut the damper.

IMPORTANT FACTS

Cold PourWhen iron is poured, the temperature of the molten material must be very close to 1370°C. If the temperature is off by as little as 4 degrees, there is risk of a “cold pour,” which causes enamel to flake off the iron. Unfortunately, the results are not immediately evident after manufacture or on a retail floor, but arise after a short period of use in a purchaser’s home.

The problem may worsen if different companies perform the casting and enameling processes.

Gassing If the iron is quickly or roughly poured, this creates tiny air pockets within the molten iron. This unsophisticated process also causes the iron to splash inside the mold, creating still more air pockets. The result is unattractive pits and bubbles in the cast iron, often seen at the edges of the castings. Preventing “gassing” is not a simple task, and

involves the coordination of many factors, including speed of the pour, the opening of the mold and the temperature of the molten iron.

Vermont Castings has the industry’s most sophisticated equipment to control all aspects of the casting process, such as our computer driven “auto-pour” which carefully monitors the rate of flow and temperature of the molten iron as it is poured into the mold.

What is FlexBurn™? FlexBurn™ allows you to switch between catalytic or non-catalytic burning methods. Whether you need an efficient catalytic primary heating source, or a low-maintenance non-catalytic solution for supplementary heat or ambience — you can choose what’s best for your home and your life.

Top Loading:

Forget about bending over to wrestle a log through a stove's front door. Better yet, forget about ashes and sparks falling out the front loading door. Just lift the griddle and let gravity do the work for you. This is the most convenient way to load a stove and is a standard feature on most of our wood stoves. The top load design of these stoves makes them easier to fill to nearly 100% of their capacity — leading to longer burn times and greater heat output. Plus you won’t have to fill them as often.

Easy Ash Handling:

Throw away that ash shovel. The unique built-in grate and swing-out ashpan on certain models eliminate all the mess involved with removing ashes from your stove. The ashpan comes with a handled lid for easy removal and disposal.

Wood stove checklist

1) Primary air enters the stove through a thermostatically controlled flap in the back and is preheated as it is drawn through the interior walls of the stove and finally to the air wash.

2) Thermostatically controlled secondary air mixes with the smoke (which is unburned wood gases) beginning the secondary combustion process and providing an optional mixutre for greater efficiency.

3) The mixture passes through a catalytic combustor which lowers the smoke's burning temperature from 650°C to 315°C and causes it to ignite. This catalytic combustion turns the smoke and other pollutants into usable heat.

1) Primary combustion air enters the stove and is preheated then introduced above the glass doors. This primary air flow is adjustable and provides control of fuel burn rate and heat output. The sweeping action of the airwash system helps keep the glass clean for better fire viewing.

2) Jets of combustion air enter through the shoe refractory and maintain a superheated primary combustion zone of coals and burning fuel where combustible gasses ignite as they pass into the secondary combustion zone.

3) Flames entering the highly insulated secondary combustion chamber are further mixed with staged secondary combustion air which provides the optimum level of oxygen to more completely burn off any remaining combustible gasses. This results in lower emissions, higher efficiency and a stable, even heat output from your stove.

How catalytic combustion works: How non-catalytic combustion works:

• Ask for a demonstration of top loading and the swing-out ashpan on your dealer's “live model” displays.

• Look closely at the quality of the cast iron on a Vermont Castings, and compare it to any other cast-iron products on the showroom floor. You will notice that Vermont Castings, surfaces are smoother and the details are more crisp and refined.

• Look at both catalytic and noncatalytic models; both have advantages.

• Carefully consider the area to be heated. Choose the size stove that most closely meets those needs.
