Queensland Arts Council changes its name to Artslink Queensland About Us QUEENSLAND ARTS COUNCIL CHANGES ITS NAME TO ARTSLI NK

QUEENSLAND

Queensland Arts Council (QAC) is currently enhancin g its position as the peak body for re-gional arts in Queensland and celebrates its 51st a nniversary with a new trading name: “Artslink Queensland”.

Artslink Queensland aims to be the 'go to' organisation for regional arts that connects, represents, adds value and is the engine room for innovation and creativity in Queensland. Artslink Queen-sland will connect artists and communities through the arts in Queensland. This builds on our 50 year history of regional arts, exhibitions, schools and adult performing arts touring across Queensland. Our new mission statement “Inspiring Arts in Queensland ” re-enforces our new direction. “Inspiring Arts” is descriptive of the type of arts we showcase – uplifting, encouraging, exciting, moving, affecting, stirring, stimulating, rousing, exhilarating, heartening… - in one word inspira-tional!

Our contemporary new logo clearly and simply captures our name change without losing the his-tory of 50 years of Queensland Art Council by utilising ‘est. 1961’.

QAC’s 2010 AGM (held in April 2011) announced the repositioning of the organisation and change of trading name.

Artslink Queensland aims to reinforce its new and very exciting brand and build on it for the next fifty years.

Get your diaries out! National Ride2School Day is just around the corner

Friday 23 March 2012 is National Ride2School Day - Australia’s largest celebration of riding, walk-ing, skating and scooting to school.

In the 1970's, 80% of school children were active on the way to school. Today, only 20% experience the joy of getting fresh air on the school journey. National Ride2School Day provides an opportunity for Australian students, parents and teachers to give riding, walking, skating or scooting to school a go, while celebrating the regular walkers and wheelers.

On this day, an active journey to school is normal and the entire school community gets behind it. It is a chance to celebrate on a large scale and to prove it can be done. After showing it's achievable on this day school communities are encouraged to keep the momentum going throughout the entire year.

‘CRACA’ needs a new name!

‘Cassowary Regional Arts Council Association’ is a mouthful in anyone’s language, so to go with our plans for the future, the opening of the Gallery Shop, the start of new Art Classes & Work-shops etc. we are looking for a new name. If you can think of a great name suitable for the arts community in our area please email your suggestions to [email protected] or [email protected]

Hippie Market will donate a prize to the person that comes up with the name we use.

We are also looking for locals to become involved in promoting the arts in our community; this is all the arts, not just painting, sculpting etc but music, drama, poetry, writing, dance, craftwork, woodwork - that is, all aspects of ‘The Arts’

To this end we are looking for members, ex-members and new members to come back or join us in this new beginning for our association. You don’t have to be an artist to be involved as every-one has skills that can be utilised. With help from the wider community we can really get some great things happening. Our aim is to have the gallery up and running in March with classes and workshops in progress as well. Please attend our next meeting on Tuesday 6 th March at 6.00pm.

If you can’t attend, your feedback is still important to us, so drop us a line with your ideas or ad-vice. We want all of you to feel that your opinions will be looked at and discussed and, when ap-propriate, voted on. This is a community organisation and everyone within that community will be treated with respect and encouragement.

Min- ister for Agriculture, Food and Regional Economies Tim Mulherin today extended the deadline for flood and cyclone assistance for primary producers, small businesses and not-for-profit organisations until 30th June 2012. “In the last month more than 1,200 applications from landholders, businesses and community organisations were received, indicating a need to extend the assistance past the 31st January deadline. This extension is in direct response to requests from producers, and industry groups such as Canegrowers, Queensland Farmers Federation and Agforce. We want to give those people still seeking assistance assurance before Christmas that they don’t have to meet a Janu-ary 31st deadline. The unprecedented weather events of last summer were exceptionally severe and we are doing everything we can to help people in the long term recovery process,” he said. Mr Mulherin said both Category C and D assistance under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) will be extended. “Category C assistance consists of grants up to $25,000 for eligible small business and primary producers in the effected local government areas,” Mr Mulherin said. “Category D assistance includes special concessional loans of up to $650,000 for eligible busi-nesses, primary producers and not-for-profit organisations suffering extreme damage, with a grant component of up to $50,000. "The assistance, administered by QRAA, has been available to flood and cyclone affected Queenslanders since December 2010 and March 2011 respectively. “The extension of these packages until 30th June 2012 will allow all remaining eligible appli-cants to obtain the help they need under these schemes. "I urge all those who have been affected by these disaster events and who have not yet applied, to call QRAA and begin the application process as soon as possible,” he said.

Aladdin & his Magic IPod In June of last year the Cassowary Coast Regional Council in con-junction with Jally Entertainment put on a children’s performance titled ‘Snow White & the 7 Cool Dudes’. It was a great success, with over 300 local students and children attending.

This year, Jally is back with a new performance titled ‘Aladdin & his Magic IPod’ . We found that the last show catered best to chil-dren under grade 5, but was enjoyed by all.

There will be a show in Innisfail and a show in Tully to ensure that all children of the Cassowary Coast region will have an opportunity to attend; The Innisfail Shire Hall on Monday the 19 th of March and the Tully MP Centre on the 20 th of March 2012, seated at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Cost of tickets is $7 per person and can be purchased from the Innisfail and Tully Council Offices.

We will be running another colouring- in competition similar to last year. Details regarding the competition will be released closer to the show date.

For group bookings or any enquiries, please call Ca ssowary Coast Re-gional Council on 4030 2285 or email [email protected] .

We hope that we will have the same success as last year.

Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund

The Queensland Government established the Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund (RHCCBF) in 1996 to provide funding to community groups in Far North Queensland. The RHCCBF receives money from taxes on casinos. It distributes these funds to community projects on a bi-annual basis. The RHCCBF is just one way the Government returns taxes from gambling activities. In redistributing gambling taxes through its grants program, the RHCCBF plays an im-portant role in ensuring, on balance, the whole State benefits from gambling in Queensland. How much can I apply for? One off grants of up to $15,000 are allocated to approved not-for-profit organisations to help provide community services or activities that benefit the community. These grants are not intended to replace existing sources of support for these organisations. Grants of more than $15,000 (up to a maximum of $25,000) are considered for more complex pro-jects which have significant community benefit. Who can apply? Applications must be from Queensland-based organisations, located within the geographical jurisdiction North from Burke, Carpenteria, Croydon, Etheridge, Tablelands and Cassowary Coast, including Torres Strait and Thursday Island. The majority of Queensland not-for-profit community organisations are eligible to apply for a grant.

Funding Rounds—The RHCCBF has two annual funding ro unds. The closing dates for ap-plications are 31 August and 28 February. Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund PO Box 6695, Cairns QLD 4870
