When performing ASO on Android, SEGA primarily focuses on the short and full app description. Mentioning a keyword three to five times throughout the full description helps SEGA rank for the keywords it has chosen to target. Christakopoulos has also found that “backlinks to the Google Play page can help improve ranking. This is a widely known best practice on Google web search when doing SEO, but page rank can affect your search ranking on the Google Play Store as well. We try to put links anywhere we can. I put a link in my email signature so that it will help us build more backlinks.”

Since partnering with Sensor Tower on ASO, SEGA has routinely seen thousands of additional organic downloads each day, simply from performing ongoing optimization and adhering to ASO best practices. Utilizing Sensor Tower to drive its ASO strategy, SEGA has been able to take Sonic Dash from an average category rank in the 200 range to the 80 range in the Top Free iPhone Apps in the U.S. “We were able to do this by iterating on our keywords, screenshots, and icons—without any paid user acquisition,” says Christakopoulos.

SEGA has found that ranking well for targeted keywords is much more important than simply going after the highest-traffic keywords and ranking outside of the top 20 results. Instead, SEGA identifies quality keywords through a balanced approach that accounts for the difficulty to rank, length of keywords, relevance, top 10 chance, and traffic score.
