The Challenge

MBL (Mifsud Brothers Ltd.) are a well-established local shipping agent representatives in collaboration with main shipping lines such as ‘Evergreen’ and ‘Cunard Lines”. Due to expansion within their operation they had to build a new office block were to manage their business. The new office is located in the unique future to be Valletta Harbour extension and all attention was taken in the design of the project. BT Commercial Ltd. was entrusted with the installation for the air-conditioning, Ventilation & Air Purification systems of the premises. Special care was taken that a high efficiency fresh air system is installed due to the location of the Power Station next to the office block. For this reason our team have set guidelines to be followed for this project to enhance systems performance, energy saving and customer satisfaction.

Guidelines

•Centralised controller system to run and control the entire air-conditioning system.•Energy saving system.• Combination of line and branching pipe connection for a shortest route possible.• Multiplex communication system that makes it possible to connect multiple indoors

units to one outdoor unit.•High efficiency Air Purification system

The Solution

The best solution for this project was the Gree GMV Multi VRF System for the air-conditioning system and the Sital Klima CTS02 for the air purification system.

Multi VRF Outline:

Shortest Route Design by Free BranchingCombination of line and branching is highly flexible.˜This follows for the shortest design route possible, thereby saving on installation time and cost. Simple Wiring2-wire multiplex transmission system makes it possible to connect multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit with a 2-core wire, thus simplify the wiring operation.

High Lift Design175m (574ft) equivalent length and 50m (164ft) height difference is allowed of Gree GMV. Level difference between indoor units of 15m(149ft) is the highest in the industry. The condition make flexibility more greater the location of the system.

Energy SavingBecause each room is controlled individually, only those rooms requiring air conditioning are cooled or heated. In addition, due to digital technology, the level of air conditioning can be precisely controlled by the condition of each room. High IPLV is achieved thanks to cutting-edge technology, and contributing to smooth and economical operation. The highest IPLV value can reach 4.01w/w (13.68 Btu/w-hr), Compared with the conventional chillers fan coil system, Multi VRF system can realised better energy saving. Centralised Control SystemA set of centralised controller can control 64 communication modules, which are connected with up to 1024 indoor units. It can conduct single control to optional region or unifying control to all units, and it can also monitor or control settings and functions of indoor units. Several displays and functions, include: error code display, online auto detect, display indication of operation state, timer, clock and self diagnosis functions. The communication net that forms by centralized control and several communication modules can contain a communication wire that id up to 1000 meter long without using communication interrupter.

The business was originally set up in 1860 under the name C&G Fratelli Mifsud by Orazio Mifsud (the great-great-grandfather of Ivan Mifsud, today’s managing director), its main function being that of attending to vessels entering the Grand Harbour.

As years passed, the English language began to substitute Italian in Malta, and trade with the UK increased. In 1933, it was felt necessary to change its name to Mifsud Brothers Ltd - a name under which it still operates today. Originally, the office was in East Street, then Kingsway (Republic Street) then 26/7, South Street, Valletta and as of 1 August 2009 at the new state of the art offices at 14, Lighters Wharf in Marsa in the inner Grand Harbour area (il-Menqa).

The 1950’s period was one the most significant years in maritime history of Mifsud Brothers Ltd. This was when the company, headed by the late Paul Mifsud, was appointed General Agent for Cunard White Star Passenger Line, Cunard Steam Cargo Line, as well as Swan Hellenic. Paul was later joined by his three sons, Ronald, Norman and Derek. In later years the company expanded into hotels and incoming tourism and responsibilities were shared, with Ronald taking charge of the Maritime Division. On the 29 October 1998 the Grand Harbour welcomed Cunard’s flagship, the Queen Elizabeth 2. This was a particularly happy moment, as this maiden call to Malta fittingly crowned fifty years of continuous service to Cunard Line by three generations of the Mifsud Brothers family. This was also the year in which Ivan and Maria Mifsud took over the helm from Ivan’s father Ronald, so it was doubly significant.

Mifsud Brothers Ltd was re-organised and several divisions were created. MBL – Malta Cruises Services was to focus on handling cruise passengers on shore excursions, pre-/post-cruise packages, turnarounds and port agency in Malta.

In 2002, MBL, in its first venture abroad, expanded its Cruise Services division into Libya together with a Libyan partner under the brand name Libya Cruise Services and it is headed by Maria Mifsud. Today, shore excursions for many cruise lines are handled from five different Libyan Ports. On the 14 September 2004, MBL had the privilege to welcome the first ever American cruise ship to Libya. More recently, on the 4 May 2006, MBL, together with an Algerian partner, handled 400 German passengers on shore excursions in Algiers, which represented the first breakthrough in Algeria. This was followed by the first ever American cruise ship to visit Algeria on the 23rd October 2006. This joint venture operates
