  • NAUE Combigrid® and Secugrid® reinforcethe railway base course on damp, marshyground.

    The railway line between Berlin and Cottbus is being completely refurbished.The challenge: upgrade eight wet, boggy sections in the Spree Forest (Spreewald) between Königswusterhausenand Lübbenau to support train speeds of 160km/h. The solution: base course reinforcement with a combination of Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 151 GRK 3 and Secugrid® 40/40 Q1.

    Since 2008, the German Railway Authority(Deutsche Bahn) has been reconstructingthe major rail link between Berlin and Cottbus. Currently, the nearly 60-km-longsection between Königswusterhausen andLübbenau is being redeveloped, whichmeans that train traffic along this stretchwill probably be halted until April 2011.The work will be worth it.

    Once reconstruction is complete, the newroute will allow speeds of up to 160km/h,which will shorten the journey by approxi-mately 20 minutes. Simple, but with highfunctionality. The wet-marshy subsoils of

    the Spreewald have pre-sented a particular chal-lenge to the project.

    Site investigations con-firmed that the basecourse would need tobe built up througheight marshy sectionson the rail line in orderto support the newspeed. Four design op-tions were available,one of which involved a combination base

    reinforcement system utilizing both Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 151 GRK 3 and Secugrid® 40/40 Q1 geogrids. Importantcriteria for choosing a solution included:

    - Costs- Construction feasibility in terms of

    local conditions (e.g., water table, space constraints)

    - Regulatory approval of both the project designand individual ma-terials to be used.

    The use of durablegeogrid reinforce-ment in the sub-basewould provide thenecessary permanentprotection and sta-bility where the non-cohesive soils have a high degree ofoverlap and/or arerelatively thin. Forthe geogrid-rein-forced base course,no special approvalwas required.

    The base layer is 50cm high and has tworeinforced layers. The lower reinforcement is provided by Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 151 GRK 3, a geotextile-geogrid composite material with additional separation and filtration efficiency. The material's characteristics and application specification are in accordance with the Federal Railway Authority's (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt [EBA])"Test Conditions for Geosynthetics in Approval Procedures of the EBA."

    Above the Combigrid®, a reinforcementlayer of Secugrid® 40/40 Q1 was installedalong with another 25cm of cover soil. Secugrid® geogrids are also manufacturedin accordance with the EBA's guidelines.This use of Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 151 GRK 3 and Secugrid® 40/40 Q1 has been installed in all eight problem soil zones for base course reinforcement. Approxi-mately 160,000m² of Combigrid® and Secugrid® have been installed along this important, refurbished rail line.

  • One of the main arteries running throughPoland, the A1 motorway features a new section that has been constructed with thehelp of products from NAUE Geosynthetics.This new section, running between theSwierklany junction on the A1 and the Polish-Czech border in Gorzyczki, is built on land where much underground mining has taken place. The possible settlement of this land made it imperative that a suit-able and reliable geogrid was selected for this project - a demand met by the Secu-grid® range from NAUE. In total, some200,000sqm of Secugrid® 100/100 Q6 hasbeen selected, along with over 1 millionsqm of Secugrid® 120/120 Q6.

    These Secugrid® flat geogrids are made frominterlaced extrued PET or PP polymer bars.The high strength monolithic welded junc-tions provide soil reinforcement for all civilengineering applications, including environ-mental, infrastructure and marine engineer-ing projects. These geogrids offer superiorsoil reinforcement elements because theyresist surface tensile force loading with very

    low elongation. This results in an immediateforce connection and interlocking with thefill soild, without primary deformation.

    Aperture size on both of the Secugrid® options selected is 28mm square, and elon-gation at nominal strength is no more than 6% in either direction. UV resistance is as high as 96.3%, and offer high weather resistance characteristics. Secugrid® is alightweight but strong product.

    Secugrid® 100/100 Q6 has a mass of800g/m2, and a tensile strength of 100kN/min both machine direction and cross machinedirection. With Secugrid® 120/120 Q6 the

    mass is 875g/m2, and the tensile strength is139kN/m in either direction. One of the keyadvantages of using this material is that it can save natural mineral resources by reducing base course thickness - reducing theneed for large volumes of stabilising soil fill,involved construction time, and transporta-tion costs. The ability of Secugrid® to offersimilar performance credentials to a PVA

    alternative also being considered, alongwith distinct price advantages, were otherfactors in the specification for this project.This section of the motorway is the thirdstage of construction - or the southern sec-tion - connecting the cities of Ṡwierklany,Mszana, Godów and Gorzyce. Lead contrac-tor is Alpine Mayreder Bau, with Alpine BauDeutschland and Alpine stavebni spolećnostacting as partner contractors.

    As it passes through the Rybnik Plateau, the opportunity was taken to integrate the route into the local environment in 'an efficient and environmentally-firendly design'. However, the mining work ofdecades passed brought with it particularchallenges, dictating that geogrids be em-ployed and the adoption of alternative,stage-based gradeline solutions. The motor-way's path takes in a variety of terrains, andhas avoided city centres wherever possible(minimising the need for demolition work).It also passes through wastelands andarable land, as well as partly throughforests.

    Once again, NAUE products have showntheir versatility and dependability in a pro-ject that represents a significant invest-ment from Poland's General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Driversusing this section of motorway will almostcertainly be unaware of the legacy left bythe mining industry in that country, but can be confident that the roads they drivealong will remain stable and dependable.

  • Scout Moor Wind Farm is situated in theWest Pennine Moors in Lancashire, North-west England. Like many wind farms, thespace and weather conditions are ideal for

    harvesting wind power, but site accessand establishing firm turbine footings isa challenge.

    The 65MW, 26-turbine Scout Moor farm wasconstructed upon an extensive peat bogthat is underlain by six coal seams and anumber of abandoned, shallow mines.It was also anticipated that very soft to soft glacial clays would underlie a signi-ficant proportion of the blanket bog. Geo-logical records indicate that the site isunderlain by a total of six coal seams.

    Limited records held by the Coal Authorityindicate approximately thirty abandonedmine entries within the vicinity of theshallow cropping seams. It was antici-pated that the vast majority of the sitewas underlain by extensive unrecorded

    shallow mine workings. Altogether 12km ofroads were planned to ensure access. Germany-based geosynthetic consultant "BBG Bau-beratung Geokunststoffe GmbH & Co. KG"

    carried out the design of the roads and 26crane pad construction areas. A 'floatingroad' construction - essentially, a linearLoad Transfer Platform proved to be theright solution, as it took into considera-tion the various site constraints as well as issues of constructability, design lifeand economics, all of which played a significant role in the final decisions.

    The very low shear strength parameters ofthe subgrade, together with the potentialcollapse of mining voids in the area, re-quired road reinforcement to prevent bear-ing failure. Geogrids were selected as themost suitable reinforcement material. Theyprovided a relatively low cost solutionwhen measured with constructability andecological impact on the peat bog envi-ronment. The improved load-distribution

    behaviour of the geogrid-reinforced aggre-gate layers meant stress concentrationsover the soft peat layers were reduced. Thisminimised differential settlements at theroad surface. Also, it reduced the quantityof aggregate needed. In the United King-dom, aggregate taxes can heavily affectproject budgets, much in the way thatsuitable aggregate availability impactsproject budgets elsewhere. For the 4.5m-wide access roads, two layers of 4.75m-wide Secugrid® were installed along thelength of the road. This represented a sig-nificant time (and cost) savings over theoriginal design, which had called for 4m-wide geogrids that would be installedacross the road width. Secugrid® was iden-tified as a technically equivalent and eco-nomically superior alternative; and theproject was built within the scheduledtime frame.

    Approximately 500,000sqm of Secugrid®geogrids (tensile strengths from 30kN/mto 400kN/m) were used for the project.
