CAS 201-101 MARRAKECH & OURIKA VALLEY – BERBER FAMILY VISIT 2 days/1 night

Situated at the foot of the tall Atlas Mountain range is the most famous imperial

city of Morocco, Marrakech. Upon arrival, proceed on foot into the ancient city,

also known as the Medina.

Explore the Mosque of the Koutoubia (the booksellers), erected in the XII century.

From its imposing and stupendous minaret, a masterpiece of the Hispanic-

Moorish art, the muezzin calls the inhabitants of the city every day to prayer.

Next, visit the Majorelle Gardens, home to the late Yves Saint Laurent which

today houses a collection of plants from the four corners of the earth, flourishing

among elegant ornamental lakes and an Art Deco villa. You will also visit the

Medersa Ben Youssef, one of the jewels of Marrakech. The current structure of

this Koranic school was built around 1570 and it is the biggest medersa (school)

in the whole of the Maghreb (west).

Lunch provides an opportunity to relax and to taste some food typical of the local

kitchen. Continue on an inside visit of the Bahia

Palace, residence of Ba Ahmed, the chief Vizier to

Sultan Moulay El Hassan. Particularly striking are the

painted cedar wood ceilings. The Palace is

Andalousian in style.

Enjoy an era gone by exploring the colorful and

perfumed world of the souks of Marrakech. In the

lanes covered with reeds and lanterns a wealth of local

handicraft are shown. Finally, arrive at the most

famous plaza in Morocco, the Jemaa plaza el Fna,

where you will find a cosmopolitan crowd of dancers,

cantastorie, snake charmers and monkey trainers. This

site was proclaimed a "Masterpiece of the oral and immaterial patrimony of the humanity” by UNESCO in 2001.

The next day, depart on a great day trip from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley which is prime hiking territory in all seasons. Less

than 45 minutes out of Marrakech you can see green gorges, sparkling yellow wheat fields at the foot of snowcapped

mountains, and the ferocious flow of the Ourika River, where women wash clothes in the spray of waterfalls at the roadside.

Look out, too, for traditional flat Berber homes; they are assembled in stacked villages all merged in the same red earth. The

only vertical line which breaks the slither of horizontal roofs is that of the village mosque, whose minaret towers above it all.

Spend time with a traditional Berber family where you can observe their way of life. Enjoy lunch with them before the drive

back to Casablanca.

Note: Please bring a pair of sturdy walking shoes.

CAS-104-101 THE RELIGIONS OF MOROCCO Half day

As many Moroccans will proudly attest, the country has a very long tradition of

religious tolerance. One of the best examples of this is the existence of a Jewish

museum in Casablanca, which makes Morocco the only predominantly Muslim

country in the world with a dedicated Jewish museum. The reasons for the

exodus of Jews from Morocco during the period 1950-1970 are due to many

different factors. There are however still many thousands of Jews living in

Morocco today which can be seen by the number of active synagogues in most of

the major cities.

All these same cities also have

churches of different denominations.

Christianity in Morocco dates back to

the Roman times and today

constitutes approximately 1.1% of the country's overall population. The Moroccan

constitution states that Islam is the official religion of the state however Christian

communities can openly practice elements of their faith.

The first stop is at the Hassan II Mosque which is the brainchild and crowning

achievement of King Hassan II. This phenomenal building is the world's third-largest mosque and it was built to commemorate

the former king's 60th birthday, opening in 1993. It is the only mosque in Morocco where non-Muslims are allowed to enter

inside. This law dates back to a French governor of Christian origin who passed the law to ensure that none of his countrymen

inadvertently offended the local Muslim communities by entering mosques without following the correct protocol – this law still

stands today. After time spent exploring the inside of this impressive building, depart to the Jewish Museum, an amazing little

museum retracing the history and way of life of the once very important Jewish community of Morocco.

From here, depart to the Catholic cathedral, which was built in 1930 using the Neo-Gothic style of architecture. It ceased to

function as a church in 1956, after the independence of Morocco, and is a now a cultural center however well worth the visit

to admire the beautiful architecture and delightful stained glass windows.

Please note: Appropriate clothing is required for access to the holy places. Shoulders and knees must be covered while visiting

the mosque. In case of religious celebrations or holidays, the tour will visit but not enter the Hassan Mosque.

CAS 401-101 BERBER VILLAGES OF THE HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS 4 days/3 nights

Located on an oasis at the base of

the High Atlas Mountains,

Marrakech is the gateway city to the

Sahara. Legend and fact both

contribute to the explanation of

Marrakech’s unique character. The

palm groves that sprang up

provided an ideal place for the

Saharan nomad Almoravids to

settle. Since that time, Marrakech

has seen many dynasties and

fortunes rise and fall, resulting in a

remarkably beautiful city that has not only become the capital of southern

Morocco but an integral city to the Islamic world. The cultural, natural and

historical attractions of this traditional Berber capital, seat to nearly all of Morocco’s dynasties over the last thousand years,

make Marrakech the top tourism destination in North Africa.

From Marrakech, travel into the mountains and become truly immersed in Morocco's rural culture. Spend a few days enjoying

the varied scenery and the kind hospitality of the Berber villagers. Enjoy walks through cultivated terraced fields with the

jagged mountains of the High Atlas rising into the distance. This trip provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with, and

learn about, rural Berber communities as participants will spend two nights in the villages.

CAS 402-101 SAHARA CAMEL TREK VIA OUARZAZATE 4 days/3 nights

Ouarzazate lies on the confluence of three

important oasis valley systems: the

Ouarzazate, Dadès and Drâa. As one

travels southeast from Ouarzazate to

Zagora, the contrast of bare sun-baked

rock with the lush green of the palm

groves forms some beautiful scenery. A

labyrinth of irrigation channels feeds the

fertile, palm-shaded terraces of farmland

in the Drâa valley. Dates are the primary commercial crop, and the best eating

dates are found in Zagora. The Drâa Valley has always been strongly influenced

and interlinked with the destiny of the surrounding nomadic tribes. It has served

as a stepping-stone for Saharan explorations since the 10thcentury. Your

experience in the Sahara will include an overnight in a nomad camp and a camel

trek into the desert.

Aït Benhaddou is a 'fortified city', or ksar, along the former caravan route

between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. It is known for its Kasbahs and has been a UNESCO World

Heritage Site since 1987 and several films have been shot there, such as The Last Temptation of Christ, The Mummy,

Gladiator, Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven and Prince of Persia.

Marrakech is the gateway city to the Sahara. The town’s origins are attributed to the development of an oasis, which grew out

of the refuse of caravans from the south, whose food supplies contained dates. The palm groves that sprang up provided an

ideal place for the Saharan nomad Almoravids to settle. Since this time, Marrakech has seen many dynasties and fortunes

rise and fall, resulting in a remarkably beautiful city which has become an integral city to the Islamic world. The cultural,

natural and historical attractions of this traditional Berber capital, seat to nearly all of Morocco’s dynasties over the last

thousand years, make Marrakech the top tourism destination in North Africa.

Rabat, chosen to be the Capital of the Almohad

empire in the 12th century, the Royal city still fulfills

that role today. This full day tour of Rabat includes an

external view of the Royal Palace, a splendid

representation of Islamic architecture.

The next visit will be the Chellah necropolis, built in

the 14th century by the Merinides, the Necropolis

stands on the site of the Roman city of Sala. Here,

nature runs riot and the stones speak volumes. Rising

up out of the bushes, a minaret with brightly colored tile mosaics stands guard

over this magic spot. Allow yourself to be bewitched by the peaceful calm of the

Chellah Necropolis.

Continue to the Mohamded V Mausoleum situated a stone’s throw from the Hassan tower, but separated by many centuries.

Mohamed V Mausoleum’s, construction began in 1962. This Sultan led Morocco to independence and the country built a

monument to both honor him and to express its gratitude. No less than 400 craftsmen were employed in the building of this

splendid edifice. The exterior comprises a magnificent white marble pavilion surmounted by a roof of

green tiles. Inside, the exquisitely crafted burial chamber, we find the white onyx tomb, which stands on

a slab of mirror.

The Hassan Tower is 44 meters (140 feet) high and was originally intended to attain 80 meters (260

feet). Majestic, although never finished, the tower was the brainchild of sultan Yacoub El Mansour

where it was to stand, reflecting the glory of the Almohad Empire which in the 12 century, stretched as

far as Tunisia and Moorish Spain.

CAS 204-201 EXPLORING MARRAKECH & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS 3 days/2 nights

Marrakech is the pulse of Morocco. This Berber city, once an imperial city, links

sub-Saharan Africa to the Arabo-Andalous in the north. Marrakech is certainly a

cross section of civilizations, and showcases ethnicity and religion. In addition to

visiting Marrakech, you will have the opportunity to explore Berber life and culture

through several fun activities.

On your first day, see the Koutoubia mosque, which is an emblem of Marrakech. Koutoubia’s minaret inspired the architects of

the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat; it is the most perfect Islamic religious structure in North Africa. Next, visit

the Bahia palace, a small piece of folly ordered in 1880 by the great vizir Sidi Moussa. This masterpiece of domestic architecture

gives you a good idea of how the privileged lived during the 19th century in this Imperial city. By the end of the afternoon, visit

Djemâa el Fna square, a multitude of street artists with stalls of dried fruit or orange juice freshly-pressed before you. No one

really knows how it came into being, but over the years it has become the beating heart of Marrakech, where mime artists, snake-

charmers and street musicians perform at every turn. The second day is dedicated to the Berber culture, life and some fun!

Visit a village where the local people will take you to an oil mill and to a traditional Berber house. Ascend on a soft trek to a high

plateau above the village, escorted by the villagers. Upon arrival on the plateau, you will be split in 3 groups that will rotate

through different activities:

Activity 1 – Preparation of Adobe bricks used in the building of Berber houses using the ancestral technique

Activity 2 – bread making and cooking class (this group will prepare what the entire group will have for lunch)

Activity 3 – Accro Park, an obstacle course with 3 levels of difficulty and Aerial Park, among the biggest four ziplines in Africa

On the last day, continue with the three activities before an early lunch and return to Casablanca.

central to the Islamic world.

Founded around 790 by Moulay

Idriss I, many mosques and

Medersas (Koranic schools) were

houses that are part of the architectural Heritage of Fes, by allowing them to

accommodate foreigners. A very interesting opportunity to be introduced to the Moroccan culture. Take part in a cooking lesson to

be initiated to the Moroccan Gastronomy and then have lunch in an old palace of the medina.

Palace, a splendid representation of

Islamic architecture. The next visit

the 14th century by the Merinides,

brightly colored tile mosaics stands guard over this magic spot. Allow yourself to

be bewitched by the peaceful calm of the Chellah Necropolis.

The exterior comprises a magnificent white marble pavilion surmounted by a roof of green tiles. Inside, the

exquisitely crafted burial chamber, we find the white onyx tomb, which stands on a slab of mirror. The Hassan Tower is 44

meters (140 feet) high and was originally intended to attain 80 meters (260 feet). Majestic, although never finished, the tower

was the brainchild of sultan Yacoub El Mansour whose ambition was to build the biggest mosque in the Muslim world. Two

hundred columns mark out where it was to stand, reflecting the glory of the Almohad Empire which in the 12 century,

stretched as far as Tunisia and Moorish Spain.
