Casa do Vapor in Cova do Vapor, Almada!!!

COLLECTIF EXYZT

The steam house is a self-produced project in the Cova do Vapor neighbourhood in Almada, collaboratively build by the local community, the EXYZT collective and guests. It is hosted by local groups and associations and open to all visitors.

It takes place between the ocean and Cova do Vapor, a fishermans village within the Tejo estuary near Lisbon, that stands out for its strong sense of community and unique architectonic heritage based on a tradition of self-building.

The Casa do Vapor project is conceived as a new public space, proposing workshops, forums, performances and diverse other activities. It is providing a residency space, performance and workshop area, a bar, a hammam and various facilities for the inhabitants of Cova and the beach users. The project will run from April to October 2013, linking a cultural residency programme with sportive and alternative commercial activities that will contribute for its sustainability.


The neighbourhood of Cova do Vapor is a fishing community from the 1940s and is still inhabited by fishermen.Built by its inhabitants, Cova do Vapor presents particular and unique architectural characteristics. It is situated in an area of high erosion on the banks of the estuary of Tejo´s river, facing Búgio and on the Atlantic Ocean and has always registered significant shoreline setbacks. Since the end of the 1940s, the inhabitants had to move their houses several times. Hêrnani Pereira, the former president

of the Residents Association, remembers that often the houses were transported by a yoke of bulls: “It was Manuel da Fruta who carried the houses. Some would be dismantled on the way and others would come intact”. *1

Cova do Vapor still maintains this informal architecture, with more or less precarious constructions built in a spontaneous way, “where sometimes it is hard to understand when one starts or ends”. *2

Currently Cova do Vapor is in a complicated legal situation. It is located in Lisbon’s public maritime domain and has not been through the process of legalisation.

Given its irregular status, the community has a broad record in solving problems by their own means, sustained by a strong social cohesion and tight bonds of solidarity. Besides constructing their own houses, the inhabitants got together and, with the contribution of everyone, built their water and electricity systems as well as paving the main roads.

In 2011, Cova do Vapor captured the attention of a group of architects led by Filipe Balestra and Sara Göransson. TISA - The Informal School of Architecture took place and the group mapped the village and created a model of Cova do Vapor. But also besides TISA, Cova do Vapor has been a frequent subject of research for many artists and students.www.urbannouveau.com

In mid of april 2013 the exyzt collective will start it’s residency in Cova do Vapor. The project is initated since 2012, coordinated by a group formed for the project out of young people from various backgrounds, inhabitants of Cova, artists from Lisbon, craftsmen and -women, producers coming from alternativ culture events and others.The start of the project is marked by several public meetings in the community accompaining the frist build installations. Need and participation will be defined by relising the project.The core structure, the common house of Casa do Vapor will be collaboratively build in 2 phases with members of exyzt collective, befriended european architecture collectives and local community.

Reuse of the wood!

In february, the EXYZT collective was invited by Guimarães 2012 - European Capital of Culture to propose a scenography for the Curators’Lab residency project by Gabriela Vaz Pinheiro and Ligia Afonso. They established construir juntos - constructLab, building together with a big group of students from local architecture and art school the scenery in the former ASA factory in periphery of Guimaraes. The whole structure was built out of 40m3 standard wooden boards, “pinus nacional” purchased by a local saw mill.

With the casa do vapor project exyzt wants to bring both, the fantastic human dynamic and the re-use of the wood from Guimaraes to Cova do Vapor! The project is build in partnership between the team and the local community, offering and developing the acquired skills from construir juntos. The idea of capital of culture will continue and be extended in Lisbon area in 2013.

EXYZT

The collective EXYZT established 2003 in Paris as a ‘platform for multidisciplinary creation’ whose aim is to challenge the view of architecture as an independent field of practice. Instead, they embark on experimental temporary living ventures built collectively.

The collective conceive and organise each project as a playground in which cultural behaviours and shared stories relate, mix and mingle.Each project strives to involve different constituencies of the local community in a social network that is invited to inhabit a temporary space.

Our team is a community of people who have chosen to act under the same principle of sharing knowledge and abilities. We extend our network over national borders by collaborating with people around the world.« EXYZT » is an association under the french 1901 legislation.

ConstructLab defies conventional building processes in which the architect designs and the builder builds, here, concept and construction are united. The designers-builders give life to the place, inhabiting it and allowing the integration of participants. This synergy result in projects where it combines the creative and practical thinking with the doing and gives the building a local sense of place.

Cova do Vapor Residents Association

was founded on January 1st 1993, and is currently constituted by 400 members. Since 2009 the presidents are José Carlos Cleto and Eduardo Ferreira.

The association organises activities in benefit of the local community and its surroundings, such as beach-combing, community parties and other events. The members of the Association get together to improve the streets, water drainage and electric facilities of Cova do Vapor as well as other public areas, such as the picnic park.

The Association will support the Casa do Vapor project by lending a parcel of land in the village where the structure will be built. Moreover, the Association will serve as mediator of the residents of Cova do Vapor, facilitating their collaboration and divulging the project.

Another Merry Day

is a group composed by Amália Buisson, Mafalda Corrêa Nunes, Diana Pereira Sofia Costa Pinto and others. They are interested in exploring new forms of social interactions through artistic collaborations. In partnership with the Exyzt collective and the Associação dos Moradores da Cova do Vapor, they will be responsible for the management, production, divulgation and viability of the whole project. Amália, Mafalda, Rita’s and Diana’s collaboration is strengthened on their different professional experiences in set/costume design, educational, curatorship and production
