CAS ETH Development and Cooperation

Alumni “The CAS at NADEL offers concrete practical know-how for development cooperation. The CAS raises students’ awareness of the current political debates and the complexity of various contexts. The theories and concepts discussed are all grounded in reality. I also greatly appreciated learning from experienced colleagues in the group exercises.”

“The CAS in Development and Cooper-ation at the ETH is the ideal training for strengthening competence and knowledge in development cooperation. This is thanks to the successful mix of method- and policy-oriented courses, which provide theory and insights into the practice, on the one hand, and to the flexible structure allowing a high degree of personalization on the other. Interaction with lecturers and other participants is very beneficial.”

“Visiting NADEL’s continuing education courses has helped me better under-stand current debates in development cooperation. It gets right to the essence of key issues and challenges, and these are presented from various perspectives, including the private sector, political bodies, churches, NGOs, research institutes, and others. After working in the private sector, the CAS program was very valuable to me and raised my curiosity. Not to forget that NADEL also offers terrific oppor-tunities to meet great people.“

Overview

The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Devel-opment and Cooperation (CAS ETH D&C) is a part-time continuing education program that enhances technical and methodological exper-tise in topics of international cooperation.

The students benefit from both the knowledge of ETH researchers, who teach regularly at NADEL, as well as from experienced profes-sionals who discuss specific practical aspects of development cooperation.

Upon completion of the study program partici-pants will be able to:

→ apply important methods to the results-ori-ented planning, implementation and man-agement of development projects;

→ integrate cutting-edge knowledge of select-ed priority topics in the field of international cooperation into their work;

→ discuss issues of current importance in in-ternational development policy.

Study Program

The study program is modular. At least 6 courses must be completed to reach the mini-mum total of 10 ECTS points.

The CAS ETH program consists of compulso-ry and elective courses. The two compulsory courses develop a basic methodology for the implementation of development projects and discuss a current topic in development policy.

Aside from the two compulsory courses, students have the ability to design their own personalized study program from more than 20 different method- and policy-oriented courses. This distinction is in response to the fact that both technical and policy-oriented knowledge is of great importance in interna-tional cooperation. Students should take this complementarity into account when designing their study program.
