Message from the President

Carrying Forward A Precious LegacyTraditionally, at past 60, one is

expected to be doing nothing more strenuous than dandling

assorted grandchildren on one’s knees. But if 50i is the new 30, then 60 would have to be the new 40. At least that’s how it feels. Work-wise, my commitments have multiplied. And socially, I have never been busier. It wasn’t planned this way!

When I accepted the Rotary Presidential nomination, I thought the two years lead period would give me plenty of time to clear the decks and concentrate on this single and singular responsibility. As a regular member, I was well aware of how seriously our Rotary Club takes its duties. And so it should. In a country faced with enormous social and economic challenges, it is incumbent upon the fortunate to help those less so. As one of the longest serving, widest spread and most active institutions, Rotary International, now 111 years old, is an invaluable asset. And each one of us is entrusted with carrying forward a precious legacy.

As President of the Rotary Club of Bombay, I intend to bring to my tenure the lessons learned over a

lifetime — some from mistakes never to be repeated, others from happy chances that worked. Key projects focus primarily on the areas of health and education. With regard to the former, we intend to expand our ambit to include the health and welfare of this city’s oft neglected animals. Towards this end, we shall be aiding Welfare of Stray Dogs with a fleet of four ambulances. Another overlooked community is the elderly, for whom we propose to create daycare centers in villages. Other initiatives include 100 free pediatric heart surgeries, and a first-of-its-kind Rotary Homeopathy Clinic at Cotton Green. Towards improved education, we shall incorporate E-learning under the Bhavishya Yaan project in five Municipal schools. Ongoing projects

such as Talwada, IWA, Akshaya Patra, Vocational training, Museum and Asiatic Restorations shall be supported and scaled up. We will augment the Jal Jeevan project to provide drinking and sanitation water to the farmers of Marathwada.

I am joined in these efforts by an able and enthusiastic team of office bearers, directors and chairpersons. We have received tremendous encouragement during the drawing up of these plans and we are counting on your continued support towards their successful execution.

Above all, I am mindful of the honor of heading this prestigious Club and shall work hard to live up to its high standards. During this one year, whilst I shall remain a doting granddad, the Rotary will be my priority and I foresee that it will be mostly Club targets and schedules being fondly dandled on my knees. Please do feel free to call me and share ideas and feedback. We’re in this together towards creating a better world for all.

Asst. District GovernorJay Toshniwal

An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, Jaykumar Toshniwal is a reputed Chartered

Accountant, and former Director of ANMI (Brokers’ Trade Association).

Jay joined the Rotary Club of Bombay Peninsula in 2006 and has served in District 3140 as Club President, Group Coordinator, GML Team Member, Avenue Co-Chair - Vocational Service-II and Avenue Co-Chair - Non-Medical Service-III. He has also held positions of responsibility in several social organizations like Bharat Vikas Parishad, Mahesh wari Pragati Mandal and Mewar Maheshwari Mandal.

Service to humanity has been the cornerstone of Rotary since its earliest days, and its main

purpose thereafter. RI President, John F. Germ believes there is no better path to meaningful service today than Rotary membership, and no organization better placed to make a real and positive difference to our world. Reflecting on how Rotary came into being, he quotes Paul Harris: “Individual effort may be turned to individual needs, but combined effort should be dedicated to the service of mankind. The power of combined effort knows no limitation.” It shall be our task this year to live up to those

ideals and our privilege to carry forth the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity.

From John comes this personal note of encouragement:

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

I embarked on the road to Rotary in part because of my friend and mentor George Campbell, who taught me the importance of civic responsibility. After starting down that road, I encountered many other Rotarians walking the same path, who offered their help and made sure I kept moving in the right direction.

I am the person I am today because of Rotary. And to be a member of the Ro-tary family is to be a part of something much bigger than yourself. It means that you are a part of a worldwide team; together, we have provided extraordi-nary service to the world.

We are closer than ever to achieving our promise of Polio eradication.

Through service projects, we have met the needs of local and global communities. We have developed strategic partnerships that allow us to work with like-minded organizations and achieve as even great impact.

Today, our world is depending on us to do even more. Now is the time to capitalize on our success and to catapult Rotary forward to be an even greater force in the world. To do this, we must work together. Remember that today is the first day of the rest of your life, and how you spend it is up to you.

I know that together, we can accomplish great things this year as we continue the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity.

Sincerely

John F. Germ 2016-17 President, Rotary International

Message from the District Governor

Major Plans for the ‘Pratham’ Year

District Governor Gopal Rai Mandhania has been an inte-gral part of every Governor’s

team and discharged his duties with distinction. Outstanding achieve-ments include organizing 101 RYLAs & RYPENs, and raising US$ 6,35,000 from the district for Polio Plus and TRF.

Entrusted with the leadership of the newly carved District 3141, he is

Guest of Honor

Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Government Of India

Mrs Maneka Sanjay Gandhi

Crusader, green politician, author, columnist, Member of Parliament and five-time

Minister, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi is among modern India’s most remarkable figures. In a career spanning over 30 years she has demonstrated unparalleled commitment, energy, innovation and practicality in creating and implementing programs for the needy and marginalized. Whether it is children, the disabled, the aged, animals or the environment, what ties the enormous body and range of her contribution together, is her empathy with need and suffering and her effectiveness in alleviating it. Both in and out of government she has found ways so that all may benefit from the enormous progress a part of our world has tasted.

Known for her outstanding organiz-ing skills, use of creative technical solutions and common sense reforms, her name has become synonymous with social activism in India. In many ways, she has changed the face of modern India. She has won landmark decisions, both legislative and judi-cial for the cause of environment and animal protection. She has piloted path-breaking legislation for pro-tecting coastal areas and historical buildings. She has brought about enlightened reforms and support structures for the aged and disabled. She has set up integration programs for tribals, minorities and backward castes; rehabilitation projects for street children and drug addicts. She has empowered India’s NGO sector and herself founded and led NGOs in the fields of child, animal and envi-

ronment protection. She has prov-en to be extremely task-centered, determined to make a difference and produce results. She is some-one who sticks to her issue-based agenda whether she is in or out of government. She is well informed and zealous to a fault in whatever issues or tasks she takes up. Her indefatigable activism has produced an incredibly long list of victories which have led to enduring chang-es in the neglected field of animal rights. Whether she is in or out of power, she remains the quintessen-tial activist”.

mindful of the great responsibility that comes from being a successor to the parent District 3140, acknowledged throughout Rotary, as a premium dis-trict. And confident of 3141 reaching similar status. He intends for the year ahead to be a breakthrough year in Rotary’s battle against Polio. With the scourge now contained to just two countries, we are close to fulfilling the promise of a polio-free world.

Several events and projects showcasing Rotary achievements have been planned to mark its 111th anniversary this year. 3141 is aiming for a record breaking initiative against diabetes with over 200 camps and 100000 check ups on the anvil. Partnering us will be Thyrocare, Terna Medical College, Bombay Ophthalmologists’

Association, Diabetic Foot Society of India and Seven Hills Hospital. Another thrust area, pediatric heart surgery which aims to treat more than 300 children will be supported by Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute and Wockhardt Hospital.

Gopal urges every Rotarian to take up at least one project and one event each so that on 30th June, 2017 every Rotarian from the District can feel justifiably proud to have contributed to the success of the Pratham year. In his words, “A hun-dred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depends on the labor of other men, living and dead... And that I must exert myself in order to give in the measure as I have received and I am still receiving”.
