SHIELDS ACHIEVES GREATNESS IN IRONMAN ROLE By BILL TREDELMAN, Athletic Publicity Director

In this modern era of football-charact rized by the two-platoon sy tern, multiple substitutions and a different sp cial ist for each phas of the game - there just aren't many of the old rough and rugged ironmen around, and so it's unusual to see a player perform for nearly sixty minutes of ever y ball game throughout an entire • ason doing whatever he is asked to do. The average co ll ege player can't, and doesn't, do it.

Burrell hields, howev r, i not an average player, and as a result th Blue Streaks' senior left halfback has been carrying t his type of load since his fir t game for Carroll back in the 1949

a on, doing a whale of a job in t he proce . Actually, Shield is that old type of player

mentioned abo e. He doe just about everything a player can do, and he doe it well. He's an excellent ball carrier, a hard blocker, a fine pass receiver and he employ a dazzling change of pace when returning punt that can, and usually doe , leave would-be tackler taring openmouthed a he churn by.

Furthermore, Shields ha · been perfo rming brilliant gridiron tricks for Carroll ince his fir t season when he broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore. That year he averaged 5.3 yards p r carry, scoring 4 touchdowns, wit h 2 coming on long and spectacular runs. One was a 90-yard punt r turn against Marshall Coli g , while t he other came when he intercepted a Case Tech pass and threaded his way t hrough the entire Rough Rider team for 65 yards and a score.

And all t his in addition to being one of the finest def n iv backs in leveland 's postwar football history.

His r cord ince he fir st sta rted playing for an·oll is just as impressive. The former East

Tech tar has now gained 66 yards for an alltime average of 4.7 yards per try. He's caught 13 pa ses for an addit ional 309 yards and has tallied 60 point on 10 touchdowns.

The Shield ucce tory doe n' t top there either, for the rangy grid ·tar has al o made hi pre ence felt on t he hardwood a well as on the cinder track to become the first t hree- port letterman at Carroll ince long before World War II. He already ha two years work behind him as a broad jumper, high jumpet· and relay man on Carroll' track team, and made his ba ketball debut with last year' cage quad.

It must be admitted that during t he past two football season , Shield has been somewhat overshadowed by th football feats of arl Taseff and Don Shula, now with the Cleveland Brown , fo r th y copped just about ev r y honor in sight during th ir stay at Carroll. The mode -t, soft-poken lad was not ent irely overlooked though,

He ha received other rewards thi season too, for three times the new paper and radio men who cover Carroll football have named him the outstanding Carroll player of t he week. And aJ. though he won't admit it, Shields could ea ily end hi college career by being named the outstanding co11ege player in the di trict.

After he fi nishes school-a a physics major, incidentally-his greatest hope is to join the pro ranks, and provided military service does not beckon, there is little doubt that he will get his chance. For those who have s en h im play, his clas mate , h is teammates and coaches, there is a! o little doubt that he will make the grade. He' just a great guy, in every en e of the word.
