Governors Report to Parents

I am pleased to present the Governors’ Annual Report to Parents for the year 2018/19 I think it is fair to say that the School is now running smoothly and the problems of the recent instability are now largely behind us. The Governors remain extremely grateful to all of the staff for their efforts in achieving this. As I have previously mentioned, Mr Hughes has now formally resigned from his post as Headteacher. Mrs Morris has agreed to continue in her position as Acting Headteacher and is seeking the National Professional Qualification for Headship. The Governors will subsequently be seeking to appoint a permanent Headteacher in due course. The Governors, with the teaching staff, have continued to focus on the priorities that were highlighted by the 2014 ESTYN inspection and you will find details of that in the report. In addition, all of the Governors are regularly visiting the School and monitoring pupils’ work as well as teaching standards and methodology. This has been very useful. When I have visited the school it has been very good to see the children appearing to be extremely happy and enjoying being at school. I hope you will find the report informative, but if you any queries or questions, please do ask. Yours sincerely,

Over the past year the school has worked alongside finance officers to ensure the school remains financially viable, as budget efficiencies continue to have a clear impact on our total delegated funds. The expenditure in 2017/18 allowed the school to employ Mrs Meinir Wyn Morris as full time Acting Headteacher in a non-teaching role for stability, school progression and development alongside four full time teachers for the whole of the academic year.

There have been no school gifts during this period and no governors have claimed travelling or subsistence expenses.

Key Stage 2 Targets Set for Pupil Attainment 2017-2018:

Attendance:Attendance for the year was 95.7%, of which 0.28% was unauthorised absence. The school was marginally below its target for attendance of 96%.

Links with the community:

This year seems to have been busier than ever as the following demonstrates. We have very strong relations with the Community and the Governors are very grateful for the numerous opportunities they provide.

We are so proud of our Ladybirds Nursery which provides strong transition to school. They were judged by Estyn as “Good” in all aspects and were then inspected by CIW who provided an amazing report about the provision and standards. We thank Mrs Nia Williams for her input who left us at the end of the year.

The School still hosts a weekly Stay and Play, daily Breakfast Club and After School Club to help working parents with wrap around care. Soccerholics and Pyjama Drama provided after school clubs.

There were strong transition ties with Llanfyllin High School for our Year 6 pupils with workshops and study days. We also welcomed a Welshpool High School Year 10 pupil and an Oswestry School Year 13 pupil on work experience.

We accommodated a Childcare student from Shrewsbury College and a PGCE student on teaching practice.

Families were involved in the school community tidy up and the village litter pick events.

Open Afternoons were held termly and were supported and visited by parents and other family members. There were presentations by classes and each of our school pupil voice representations – School Council, Eco Council, Criw Cymraeg, Digital Leaders and Values Committee. PC Gayle Jones, Community Police has visited the school over the year to talk to the children on anti-bullying. The Fire Service also attended to share their safety message

The Eco Council were very busy with local expertise creating our Wildlife Area further to a successful grant bid from Tesco.

We thank local companies for their support over the year – Costcutter, Daniel Patrick, Griffiths Topshop, JC Dyke and so many school families for donations of services and products.

Darren Mayor through his Impact Assembly visited termly. Reverend Emma held acts of worship in the school and following her departure we were visited by Nick and Heather Rees, Darren, Archdeacon Peter Pike and Rev. Hermione. We presented to the community our Christmas, Harvest and end of term services at St Ffraids Church. Rev Hermione led the Year 6 pupils in Church through a Eucharist Service. Year 6 also attended a Retreat at Pennant Melangell. We participated in a Christmas stocking making event with the Church community in order to decorate the Church. Lis Aslin our Bishop’s Visitor came to us termly to monitor our provision.

A number of charity events were supported during the year, more than ever – Poppies were sold for the Royal British Legion, Children in Need, Sport Relief, Breast Cancer, Alder Hey Hospital, Vision Aid, Cancer Research UK, Living Streets, Sal’s Shoes. We also brought awareness of Save the Children, Share a pencil day, Christian Aid and Young Carers.

Pupils entered Bishop Gregory’s Christmas card competition to maintain links with the Diocese and a pupil from our school won overall in the Diocese Logo Competition. Ros Williams from the Diocese came to school to present the prize.

Mrs Elliott held her annual piano concert to raise money for local schools. Many of our pupils performed and were praised for their piano playing.

We applied for grants and were successful in our bids to the NFU and also Archbishop Alwyn Fund.

Friends of the School:

The Friends raised funds for the school through providing refreshments, raffle and hamper at Christmas, refreshments at Sports Day, the village coffee morning and the village fun day. They also organised a Cinema night and the collection of Dragon bags.

The hard work of this small group of people is especially beneficial for the children and the Governing Body wishes to thank them for their efforts. Their fundraising in the last year enabled the school to spend money on a new Water Cooler, 2 playground benches, Pie Corbett books and lunchtime resources

A school tidy up involving Staff, Governors and Friends of the School was carried out in September and our school over the year has become a much clearer, tidier place of work.

Extra-Curricular Activities:

We were awarded twice over the year – the Silver Award for Eco Schools and the Bronze Award for Bilingualism.

Over the past year, teachers and volunteers have led a variety of clubs including Running, Disney, Coding, Art, Eco, Welsh, Urdd Art Dance and Performance, Fun Fitness for the Family, Sport.

The children performed at the Christmas Concert, Harvest Assembly at the Church, Christmas carol singing. Piano lessons have continued to be led by Mrs Elliott and Mike Wilcox teaches guitar in the school.

In October we held a school Eisteddfod where children created paintings, 3D artwork, cookery, recitals and singing. A vast number of children also performed at the Urdd Eisteddfod onstage and entered into Arts and Crafts activities. We thank Philippa Hughes for giving her artistic time.Working together as a family, following in the footsteps of Jesus, always giving our best. Foundation Phase

PrinciplesChildren are taught by ‘stage not age’ therefore what is being taught is always appropriate for them. The principle we teach by is that young children learn most effectively when they are playing (in accordance with Welsh Assembly Government Guidance). Children learn by building on their own experiences and they use these to make sense of the world around them.

Areas of Learning

There are 7 areas of the curriculum we need to cover: Personal, Social and Cultural Development and Well-Being

Working together as a family, following in the footsteps of Jesus, always giving our best. Gwethio gyda‟n gilydd fel teulu, dilyn yn nhaed yr Iesu, pob amser yn rhoi ein gorau

Language, Literacy and Communication (English) (Literacy Framework) Mathematical Development (Maths) (Numeracy Framework) Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Science, History, Geography) Physical Development (PE, fine and gross motor skills) Creative Development (Art, Music, Dance) Welsh Language Development.

R.E Curriculum

ApproachThe classrooms are arranged into 'curriculum areas'. Children are allowed to access the areas freely, as continuous provision. They have an understanding of the equipment available in each area and how it can be used. This provision is then enhanced on rotation, allowing for more focused learning opportunities. These specific challenges are differentiated depending on the child's learning needs. In addition, children complete focus tasks, with an adult, which are appropriate for their stage of development. Area challenges and differentiated focus tasks allow children to extend their learning and stretch the more able and talented pupils. During the day there are planned periods of numeracy and literacy to ensure the children acquire their key skills for learning. This means that every day the children will read with an adult in some format, have handwriting practice, take part in phonics lessons and carry out number and literacy tasks. Welsh phrases are used in the classroom for familiar instructions and questions and they have a Welsh lesson each week. Each half term we investigate and explore a different topic. These topics are designed to bring in all areas of the curriculum the children need to cover. The children initially explore what they know about the topic, discuss what they want to know and write questions which informs the teachers planning. In this way the children direct their own learning and build on what they already know.

AssessmentChildren’s development and progress is recorded throughout the year. We assess in terms of the Learning Outcomes laid down in the curriculum. At the end of the Foundation Phase the Welsh Assembly Government would expect most children to be at Outcome 5.

Key Stage 2

PrinciplesWithin the junior classes children from Y3 to Y6 are taught in ability groups for all subjects. The curriculum is differentiated to meet the needs of all children. Children learn through experiences that build on previous learning; this supports, extends and challenges all to meet their potential.

CurriculumThe children learn through an evolving creative curriculum that covers the following national curriculum subjects:

English (Literacy) Maths (Numeracy) Science Welsh as a second language Religious Education Information Communication Technology Physical Education History Geography Art

Page 10: Carreghofa Primary Schoolllansantffraidprimaryschool.weebly.com/uploads/8/8/7/… · Web viewProcedures outlined in the Powys Guidance on the election of school governors will be

Design Technology Music

ApproachWe aim to give all our pupils equal access to a broad, balanced and relevant learning curriculum that includes all aspects of the National Curriculum. A range of teaching and learning approaches are used as appropriate and we recognise that learning is a continuous process and children acquire knowledge at varying speeds. Independent learning is encouraged and supported in the juniors when children are developmentally ready. They are encouraged to share their learning and support each other’s learning through various methods, for example feedback, pair work and the three Bs (brains (ask yourself), buddies (seek help from friends and other sources), boss (ask the teacher).

The curriculum is divided between morning and afternoon sessions. The children are taught skills in reading, writing, spelling, number, shape, measures and data handling in the morning. Investigations, ‘real life’ problems and problem solving are used to extend the children’s thinking, develop independence and apply skills learnt. During the afternoon the children explore a termly creative curriculum focused around history, geography, science, art, design and technology, music and RE. Within the creative curriculum, key skills from the Literacy and Numeracy framework underpin all lessons; including the learning opportunities, activities and investigations taught.

The children are encouraged to ask questions, explore avenues of learning that interest them and develop skills that allow them to become autonomous learners. ICT skills are taught and used to create opportunities for independent topic exploration and communication.

Children of all needs and abilities are supported within the junior classes. For the more able and talented pupils, a more investigative and independent learning focused programme of study is used. This is led largely by the pupils’ interest and area of skill.

AssessmentChildren’s development and progress is recorded throughout the year. We assess in terms of the subject levels laid down in the National Curriculum. At the end of Key Stage 2 the Welsh Assembly Government would expect most children to be at Level 4.

National TestsDuring the first half of the summer term all pupils from Y2 to Y6 take part in national tests set by the Welsh Assembly Government in reading, maths and problem solving. Average pupils are expected to achieve a standardised score above 95 in each test.

Whole School

The key skills of Bilingualism and the Digital Competency Framework are constant undercurrents throughout the school day in addition to Literacy and Numeracy. We have also started to move toward the new Curriculum for Life, Curriculum for Wales which is based on greater independence, high levels of Pupil Voice and key life skills based on Four Core Purposes: 1. ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives 2. enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work 3. ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world 4. healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society Our school has endeavoured

Language CategoryLlansantffraid Church in Wales School is an English Medium School. Welsh is taught by all staff (supported by peripatetic Welsh teacher, Mrs Andrews on an advisory basis). Each class receive 60 minutes dedicated teaching time in Welsh and also lead short blast 10-minute Welsh lessons on a daily basis. All subjects except Welsh are taught through the medium of English, however bilingual phrases and words are introduced in most sessions. Simple Welsh phrases, dates and commands are used by the teachers during the school day. We are proud to say we received the Bronze Award for Bilingualism. Pupils with disabilitiesThe school is equipped to welcome disabled pupils, staff or visitors with temporary ramps available to allow access to the rear of the school.

FacilitiesThe school has toilets appropriate for children, adults and disabled persons. These facilities are cleaned at least daily or as required.

Healthy Eating and DrinkingThe children enjoy a healthy snack at break times. An awareness of how to eat and live healthily is incorporated into PSE. Water is promoted as a regular drink during the day.

Progress on post ESTYN Inspection Action Plan (March 2014):

PRIORITY 1R1: Improve the quality of pupils’ extended writing in English

Writing has continued to be a major focus for the school and the opportunities provided for writing across the curriculum with Literacy skills have had a positive impact on standards across the school. New initiatives have included purchasing Pie Corbett exemplary texts to develop rich vocabulary and creativity. Foundation Phase staff have attended Extended Writing training. Work scrutiny evaluations show the standard of extended written work to be constantly improving and that most children can write at length and for different purposes.

PRIORITY 2R2: Ensure that pupils’ handwriting and presentation skills are consistently good throughout the school

Handwriting and presentation continue to have a clear focus. All staff have implemented non-negotiables for presentation in all books. Work scrutiny and Core Visits evaluations show that this is greatly improved with nearly all work showing compliance. Handwriting has been developed through the implementation of a consistent handwriting font. All pupils practice handwriting daily at FPh and at KS2 at least three times a week. Work scrutiny and Core Visit evaluations show that handwriting has a greater focus and is developing in all appropriate books. The progress can be seen rolling through the school.

PRIORITY 3R3: Ensure that teachers provide suitable challenges for more able pupils in all classes

Evidence from work scrutiny and Core Visits shows that standards in books for many MAT pupils is improved, with further focus in developing curriculum opportunities, Rich tasks, independent learning activities and resilience.

PRIORITY 4R4: Improve opportunities for pupils to consider and to respond to the written feedback from teachers

Marking of the children’s work has continued to have a clear focus for the school this year. Teachers are providing many more opportunities for pupils to respond to oral/written feedback in a variety of ways. Work scrutiny shows the improvement in marking and that teachers are using a range of strategies to provide children with the opportunity to respond to marking. Most marking is now skills based and comments on the learning intention. Further development is required to ensure that the response of the pupil is greater than the quantity of teacher feedback.

PRIORITY 5R5: Involve teachers more in professional learning communities in order to find out about good practice beyond the local area

Through the close link with the ERW Leader of Learning, staff have had the opportunity to work alongside cluster schools on projects – transition projects for High School, MAT Maths, MAT English, Science, Curriculum for Life Reflective Practitioner, Action Research Genius Hour. Through this shared approach staff have been able to share pupil work and have a greater understanding of good practice. Standardisation and moderation in-house ensured that all staff have a clearer idea of Outcomes and Levels within the school. Moderation allows for opportunities to observe good practice from other schools. Both Teaching and non-teaching Staff have also accessed visits to other schools out of the cluster.
