Dear parents and members of the Carranballac community,
We continue to have an exciting start to 2019 with students fully focused on learning in every program in the College.
Year 9 students were extremely pleased that Electives started in the first week, and our Foundation students have settled in brilliantly. A huge thank you to Foundation parents for bringing your children to school on the Wednesdays for the most important benchmark testing that we undertake. Staff in Years 1 and 2 have also been extremely busy undertaking benchmark testing with the support of our coaches and a range of other staff.
I am indeed very pleased to highlight that we are in receipt of DET funding to allow three of our key staff to undertake two years of specialised professional development in Science. Bek Pelar, Sue Filmer and Peter Smith have been selected to undertake this two year program designed to strengthen the College’s delivery of a rich science curriculum. They will be studying the science curriculum in depth and also working alongside other staff; across the College, in order to develop all staff members science skills. The end result will be better science learning and academic outcomes for our students.
Thank you to all in our community who took the time to attend last week’s Student Learning Conferences. During the last three conferences, attendance rates have been increasing steadily. 2018 Term 3: 767 bookings, 2018 Term 4: 978 bookings, and 2019 Term 1: 1146 bookings. I am ever so pleased that our community is seeing real value in attending. After all, education is a partnership between the family, the student and the teacher. We are aiming for 1200 attendees at mid year. Well done and thank you parents, students and staff.
Continuing on with parent participation; Carolyn Huell and staff members conducted the swim trials today. Not only was Carolyn thrilled about the participation of our students she was delighted that she had six
incredibly supportive and capable parents assisting. Special thanks to our parents who go the extra yard (that’s me being ‘old school’).
Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the Parents & Friends meeting at Boardwalk. I have come away with mixed feelings about the meeting. Firstly I am disappointed that we did not have more attending. Then I was most pleased to meet some new parents and thrilled by the continued energy, support and dedication of the parents who have been long time members of the team. Our P&F are penultimate community members. It is difficult to put into words, the praise they deserve for their relentless work behind the scenes for the College. Please support them in any way you can and especially with the College Fair.
School Council elections have closed and the results are published in this newsletter. My sincere thanks goes to our retiring members and congratulations to those who either rejoin or join for the coming term.
Our School Council holds a ‘College wide view’; at all times, and ensures that we are on a successful track endeavouring to improve everything that is Carranballac P-9 College, founded on our Vision of: One College, Infinite possibilities.
I look forward to continuing our successful educational journey with the new Council. As many would be aware we also have student representatives on Council and we are currently in the process of conducting an election to determine who fills the second available place on Council. Once this has been decided we will post the name of the successful candidate. Our student representatives have added great insight into the Council process and a strong student perspective on the needs of students.
Have a wonderful fortnight.
A REFLECTION FROM COLLEGE DIRECTOR, BRENDAN O’BRIEN, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.
Welcome back to another newsletter. We are now well into term 1 and we are pleased to report that the smooth start continues. The students have settled very well into their new learning environment. New teachers have been met and new friends are being made. It’s terrific to see the students show resilience by dealing with the changes in a positive manner.
Breakfast Club is up and running as of last week. We have a new crew of student helpers who are demonstrating outstanding leadership skills as they work with our younger students. It is such a lovely way to start the day and a credit to our food tech staff for getting this program operational so quickly.
The Student Learning Conferences last week were very successful and very well attended. These meetings give our teachers a valuable connection to our families and insights into their children, building stronger relationships and promoting the home/school partnership. If our students are receiving a consistent, positive message about education and the opportunities they have, this will result in improved wellbeing and learning. If you were unable to attend and would still like to meet with your child’s teacher, please phone the office on 9395 3533 to arrange an appointment.
We are seeing an increase of litter in the yard. We’d like families to discuss bin use and the best way to dispose of rubbish. This is a perennial issue in schools but an important one nonetheless and an issue that needs to be constantly addressed. Our staff continue to encourage our students to be proud of our school yard.
This week sees the beginning of our sports training program. We thank the staff for their excellent organisation of this program. Teams will be given the opportunity to train prior to competition time to build team values and hone their skills. Training sessions will occur after school and at lunchtimes. If your child is involved, please have the necessary permission slips returned to school. This is a busy week for our PE department as we also begin our trials for the swimming sports.
Notes have been sent home regarding our school photos next week. Coordination of school photos is a very complex exercise so please ensure you have correctly completed the required paperwork.
Our Soundgarage music program is in its fourteenth year at our college! This user-pays program offers small group, contemporary music lessons in drums, keyboard, guitar and singing/performance. Some benefits of Music Education include:
• Music contributes to students’ rational thinking — reasoning, critical thinking, logistical thinking and interpretive skills
• Music contributes to learning in other knowledge and skill areas such as numeracy, literacy
• Music contributes to students’ concentration, memory, time management
• Music contributes to students’ creativity when engaged with composing, arranging, improvising tasks
• Music provides a means for personal expression, communication, and personal, social and cultural identity formation
• Social cohesion and skills: This ‘shared sound’ leads to a greater sense of communication with others, team cooperation and enhances social confidence

Carranballac P-9 College is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2019 are:
• Scented Stackable Highlighters
• Snowy Origami Set
• Icicle Slapband Ruler
• Yeti Fluffly Notepad
• Arctic Owl Fluffy Keyring
• Scratch Art Cards
• Water Skimming Bounce Ball
• Polar Pencils & Pencil Toppers
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online : Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In Branch : Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
Jamieson Way School Banking Day is Tuesday. Boardwalk School Banking Day is Wednesday.
On these days send your child to school with their Deposit Wallet and the classroom teacher will collect. Upon processing by our volunteer parents, the book will be returned to your child’s class.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

Secondary ScienceIn Year 8 Science this term students are learning all about how the Scientific Method works, and how to conduct experiments. This week students learned about questions. They were given ice and needed to come up with as many questions as they could using simple household items. They then had to categorise their questions to identify which experimental, research and philosophical questions to identify which ones they could design experiments for, and what features made a good Scientific question.
