As a cohesive social unit, our virtue is notmeasured in our treatment of the mostpowerful among us. If it is to be found atall, it will reside in our disposition to-wards those of us who are most vulnera-ble. We all share in the responsibility tocare for those of us who cannot yet carefor themselves and those of us who nolonger can.

We tend to think that the rich, the pow-erful and the famous are immune to theundignified abuses that some of us occa-sionally endure. They are not. We all ageand as we do, many of us eventually be-come more vulnerable. At some point, every single one of us will need help.

Even so, it’s always jarring to hear thatthe likes of Brooke Astor, Mickey Rooneyand now, allegedly even media titanRupert Murdoch have suffered elderabuse. If these high profile people, mediabosses and cultural icons could not pro-tect themselves, what chance do the restof us have?

Elder abuse is widespread problem thatcrosses social, cultural, and economicboundaries. One might think that giventhis universality and scope – peoplemight be more sympathetic… We alsooften think of narrowly of what consti-tutes abuse, but neglect is also a form ofabuse. In fact, neglect can be one of theworst types of abuse.

There is much talk of “awareness” rais-ing but scratch below the surface andyou’ll quickly find that beneath the rice-paper thin sits a massive systemic failureto protect our seniors. Take, for instance, the recent tragedy that took place in theQuebec town of L’Isle-Verte where 32grandparents were lost in a nursinghome fire. The tragedy is not the first ofits kind – over the years there have beenseveral nursing home fires and at everyinquest – fire marshals have said thesame thing… There should have be sprin-

kler sys-tems in-stalled ineverydwellingwherepeopleneed helpgettingout.

The nursing home in L’Isle-Verte was un-derstaffed and it was not fitted with anappropriate sprinkler system.

There has been some progress – inOntario new nursing homes and retire-ment residences must have sprinkler sys-tems but older homes will not be forcedto have them until 2025, therefore pro-viding our seniors with another 11 yearsof poor fire safety. It’s obvious that thesafety of seniors is just not a priority.

Every year, scores of the coroners’ in-quest recommendations that have thepotential to save lives go unanswered orignored. There is no real system in placeto keep the agencies or homes that re-ceive to the recommendations account-able. If they decide to ignore theinstructions for preventing future deaths– nothing happens.

Last year, the Quebec coroners investi-gated 27 suspicious deaths in nursinghomes between 2006 and 2011 – theyfound that nearly all of the deaths wereavoidable. Several of the deaths reflectanother growing and little discussedproblem: seniors who fall or burn todeath in their baths.

Every year, staff find seniors like MauriceLaporte, 91, unconscious in their baths, their bodies covered in second and eventhird degree burns. Seniors have morefragile skin and more difficulty fightinginfection – they tend to die on site orshortly afterwards at the hospital.Coroners’ reports are grisly reads andthey make us ask – why don’t we usecommon sense? Why don’t we enforce(Continued on pg.7)

You should be aware that current fed-eral funding of $1.6Billion per year isbeing withdrawn as agreements forsocial housing expire and by 2040 fed-eral investment in support of our exist-ing stock of social housing is projectedto be zero. Currently seniors in Barrieare about 12% of the population andexpected to grow to 20% in the nexttwo decades. At this point in timeroughly 500 seniors in Barrie are di-rectly affected and this number willonly grow. The Canadian Housing andRenewal Association is launching aweb site dedicated to this pressingissue at www.housing4all.ca

Not Just a Bed – A Home

As we age and become more fragile, our needs can become too great to staywhere we would prefer to be – in ourown homes. Acute care hospitals mustconfront the problem every day of dis-charging elderly patients who are nolonger able to stay in an unsupportedenvironment. Often, the only solution isa cold, hospital-like environment whereresidents occupy “beds”.

Verena Menec, a Professor in theDepartment of Community HealthSciences in the College of Medicine atthe University of Manitoba, focuses herresearch on aging. In this thoughtfulblog post, she suggests that we need torethink the way older people arehoused, moving away from an institu-tional model (where those frail elderlystuck in the acute care hospital becausethere is no place to send them areknown as “bed blockers”) and toward amodel based on the idea of “home”and “village”. Words influence the waywe think. When it comes to public pol-icy that is right for our parents, ourgrandparents and ourselves, words mat-ter.- See more at: http://www.carp.ca/2014/08/09/just-bed-home/#sthash.j9LjgsRK.dpuf

ADVOCACYSolterra Co-Housing

THE CONCEPT...

Overview Solterra Co-housing Ltd. offersan innovate alternative to shared housingoptions available to seniors. Already prac-ticed in Australia, the concept of “SharedHome Ownership” is growing in popular-ity, both abroad and throughout NorthAmerica. At Solterra, we have adapted thisconcept to the unique requirements ofsenior citizens.

Today’s seniors are re-evaluating their pri-orities; seeking housing options that bal-ance their wish for independence with anincreasing desire or need for day-to-daysupport. A Solterra shared housing solu-tion provides support similar to an“Assisted Living Facility” combining per-sonal privacy with the advantages ofshared resources and community living.Traditionally, residents share the ownershipof the home and all relative costs, ratherthan paying rent; however, there may berental opportunities within a shared home.

Owners have their own private bed/sittingrooms with en suite, and access to thecommon areas of the home. The sharedamenities often include a kitchen and din-ing room, workshops, guest rooms, homeoffice, arts and crafts area, laundry andmore. Each owner has a percentage inter-est in the home and is registered as aTenant in Common on the title/deed.However, owners control all aspects of op-erating the entire home, and each residentcontributes to, and is accountable forhousehold decisions.

The Barrie Senior HousingCommittee has been working tireles-sely over the past few years towards aviable solution to affordable/alternativehousing for seniors here in Barrie.Solterra Co-housing provides one suchsolution that we support and are advo-cating for. The concept is outlined in thenext column....

building codes that don’t allow bath temperatures to get hot enough to kill people? It seems simple enough. Quebec has initiated this process, but again, only newhomes will have to follow the new code.

It’s puzzling to see that there is so much apathy and lack of political will to draft andenforce simple pieces of legislation that will save scores of lives every year. Why dowe accept a system that allows seniors to go unprotected – a system that is, inmany ways, abusive?

What could be more important than – literally – saving lives? Talk is cheap, actions are not. Time to put ourmoney where our mouth is: let’s keep the politicians accountable for protecting ourseniors and creating legislation that should have been in place a long time ago.

your FUTURE

DOWNSIZEor

The almost one hundred million Baby Boomers living in North America alone are just beginning to face the essential questions associated with retirement, downsizing, and determining how they will live the next chapter of their lives. Yet addressing these “Next Chapter” lifestyle options is more complicated than a casual glance might first suggest.

The Book on Downsizing – 7 Steps to Rightsize the Rest of Your Life and its companion book, The Workbook on Downsizing are for all those Baby Boomers and ‘near Boomers’ who have everything except a plan for their future. These books walk you through the seven steps that facilitate the right conclusions for you, or you and your partner.

By April LewisApril is the local communi-cations director for CARP, anational group committedto a 'New Vision of Agingfor Canada.' She writesmonthly.

ZOOMERS: Loving relationshipcan be a matter of tasteIn the spring, a young man’s fancylightly turns to thoughts of love.

But I wonder if Alfred Lord Tennysonknew how to cook!

They say the way to a man’s heart isthrough his stomach, but let me tellyou the converse is also true.

My new guy cooked for me for the firsttime the other week… OMG! It waslovingly and painstakingly prepared cur-ried chicken.

Plump pieces of organic chicken with allkinds of vegetables cut up and mixedtogether with the balanced mix of ex-otic spices making it tasty but not toohot. With rice bubbling in the pot.

But wait there is more. He said it wasimportant to refresh the palate whileeating his culinary masterpiece so heproffered fresh, ripe pieces of mangoand cantaloupe. I brought the mangochutney.

The wine was a perfect complement tothis exquisite repast.

This was followed by sweet strawber-ries steeped in Cointreau for dessert. Itdoesn’t get much better.

And Graham Kerr, the GallopingGourmet would agree. As you know,CARP hosted a recent event whereGraham was the guest speaker. You re-member him as the first televisioncelebrity chef in the ’60s and ’70s.

At 80, he’s still going strong, travellingand writing and sharing his love of allthings culinary.

Initially in his career, food was all about“delighting,” but now “nutritious”comes first.

What a clever man. He calls his wife,Treena, of 59 years, his beloved and con-tinues to enjoy cooking for her.

Kerr prefers to eat healthy food butnever denies himself the foods he loves. He tells us to go ahead and have that icecream, but perhaps only one scoopburied under berries.

Or, instead of bacon and eggs, why notcrumble one strip of bacon over a salad.

He has a thing for acronyms and his lat-est is EGGS.

• E stands for Eating. Yes, we all mustdo it to survive but it is in the way weeat, that is important. And that includeschoosing what we eat and how we pre-pare it. As my guy did in a pas de deuxcreated with his two hands.

• G stands for Growing… the food.Realistically, that might only include afew sprigs of basil in a patio pot or a gar-den full of potatoes, tomatoes andspinach. There is nothing more satisfyingthat eating something you have grownyourself. As summer approaches, you cantake advantage of the local farmers’ mar-kets.

• G stands for Gathering – getting to-gether with friends or family or the per-son you love. It is one thing topainstakingly prepare and/or grow someof the food, but it takes it to a wholenew level when you are sitting at a tablewith someone you care about.

• S stands for Sharing – the best part ofthe entire eating experience. What a joy-ful feeling it is when you cook for some-one who is enjoying your efforts andutterly consumed (pun intended) by theexperience.

So not only does the adage ‘food is love’ring true in any relationship, putting yourEGGS in one basket may also serve youwell.
