arnegie Hall first opened its doors on May 5, 1891, and it is truly amazing to consider that for nearly 120 years, since the day Tchaikovsky appeared at the first concert, the world’s finest musicians have aspired to perform here. Undoubtedly, the genius of the Hall’s conception has inspired the great artistry on its stages that continues to this very day.

This season you can enjoy Perspectives concerts with great artists as varied as singer-songwriter James Taylor and violinist Christian Tetzlaff; a multi-event focus on pianist- composer Brad Mehldau, holder of this season’s Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair; and JapanNYC, a citywide festival of performances and exhibits celebrating Japan’s complex and beguiling culture. All this is in addition to the legendary orchestras, ensembles, and artists who will perform on our three stages.

We feel both privileged and excited to present our audiences with programs that always seek to match Carnegie Hall’s extraordinary space with performances of power, joy, and discovery. Please read on, and then join us for the experience.

JapanNYC, a citywide festival led by Artistic Director Seiji Ozawa, explores the Japan of today, where new-found artistic sensibilities continue to transform and revitalize the cultural landscape. Featuring great classical music artists as well as Noh theater, manga, butoh dance, pop art exhibitions, and a variety of music genres, JapanNYC embraces a breathtaking diversity of traditional and contemporary arts. The cornerstones to the festival are provided by Maestro Ozawa himself, as he leads performances by two major Japanese ensembles that he founded, the Saito Kinen Orchestra and the Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-juku (Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra).

JapanNYC extends beyond Carnegie Hall through events at these prestigious New York City partner institutions: Asia Society, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Columbia University, Danspace Project, Film Forum, Works & Process at the Guggenheim, Japan Society, The Juilliard School, The New York Public Library, The Noguchi Museum, and The Paley Center for Media.

Single tickets for these events go on sale to the public in summer 2010. Please note that single tickets are available only through the specific venue’s ticket office.

Perspectives: Christian Tetzlaff“One of the most brilliant and inquisitive artists of the new generation” (The New York Times), German-born violinist Christian Tetzlaff has continued to expand his repertoire and audiences with playing that’s “immensely virtuosic and deeply personal” (Boston Globe). As a Carnegie Hall Perspectives artist, Tetzlaff participates in a broad-ranging series of concerts throughout the season, each promising to highlight a different side of this superb musician’s talents.

These Perspectives events include an evening with Tetzlaff as soloist and leader of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in works by Haydn, Mozart, Schoenberg, and Sibelius; a rare chance to hear violin duos; the return of the Tetzlaff Quartet following their triumphant 2008 Zankel Hall performance; and a solo turn by Tetzlaff with Ensemble ACJW conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. The violinist also performs with James Levine and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a concert devoted exclusively to repertoire featuring the solo violin, and leads a Professional Training Workshop for young violinists and pianists focused on works by Bach, Brahms, and Schumann.

Few currently performing violinists could undertake such an exhaustive exploration in one season, but Tetzlaff has a unique approach to music making. As the Philadelphia Inquirer recently wrote, “He does not rest at the level of a master; he continues to probe.”

Of Special Note: Risør Chamber Music Festival at Carnegie Hall For one week every June, the small, charming village of Risør on Norway’s southeastern coast provides an idyllic backdrop for one of the world’s most celebrated chamber music festivals. This December, world-renowned musicians from the 2010 festival, led by Co-Artistic Directors Leif Ove Andsnes and Lars Anders Tomter, bring the magic of Risør to our shores. Joining a roster of distinguished soloists are the Risør Festival Strings, an ensemble of some of the finest string players in Scandinavia. Together they perform chamber music and works for string orchestra by composers from Grieg to Honegger and Bent Sørenson, all with the enthusiasm and insightfulness that have become hallmarks of the Risør Festival.

Hear the Risør Festival musicians on the Weekends at Carnegie Hall (page 16), Chamber Sessions I (page 25), Chamber Sessions II (page 26), and Chamber Sessions III (page 27) series.

Perspectives: James TaylorShortly after James Taylor made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1970 at age 22, Time magazine observed that his artistry had reached “a level both of intimacy and controlled emotion rarely achieved in purely pop music.” The connection Taylor made with listeners was indelible, and his hits—“Fire and Rain,” “Sweet Baby James,” and “Carolina in My Mind,” to name just a few—became a soundtrack of the American experience.

The musical journey continues. In a unique residency at Carnegie Hall, this winner of 40 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards and five Grammy Awards reveals his true breadth as a musician and his evolution as an artist. Some events will focus on his musical influences— including Celtic music, blues, and Church of England hymns. Another will delve into the versatility of the guitar with all-stars of the genre. Also, as part of his Perspectives, James Taylor will host a very special gala honoring Carnegie Hall’s 120th anniversary. All will celebrate the songs that made him an American icon.
