ROBIN OTANI & THE BRITISH JUDO COUNCIL TAKEN FROM 1999 NEWSLETTER

Robin Otani President of the BJC is the son of the late Masutaro Otani 8th Dan who arrived in England in 1919

and settled here, becoming a major figure in the development of judo in Britain. In 1955 Kenshiro Abbe 8th

Dan came to Britain and in 1956 he formed his own school and named it the British Judo Council. The two

men began to work closely together, to further Judo in Britain through a style and philosophy. In the time

Masutaro Otani Society of Judo emerged with the BJC and Otani senior became its President when Kenshiro

Abbe returned to Japan.

Robin Otani started his judo at the age of 6 under the guidance of his father at the Jubilee Club. However, it

was not until the age of 13 that he started to take his training seriously and he decided to make it his life long

study. He was graded to 1st Dan at the age of 16 by Abbe sensei. A few days later he was awarded his 1st

Kyu in Kendo, within a month he was Abbe sensei personal student and assistant and was

employed as secretary of the BJC.

This was to be a fantastic time for Robin, travelling to courses with Abbe as his training assistant, as well as

many personal training opportunities with Abbe during the week. It was whilst Abbe sensei was away on a

3month teaching tour of France, that Robin became disillusioned having been left to run things in Abbe’s

absence. Robin quit his job with the BJC and took up an apprenticeship as a tool maker and practically gave

up judo all together.

With in a year though he was back on the mat and training 6– 7 nights a week in 1962 he entered the

British Olympic Trials competing against judoka from other associations for a place in the squad. Only BJA

players were selected that year, such was a difference in competitive judo. Since that time only BJA

players have been able to go forward for selection. It was because of this that Robin realised that to stand a

realistic chance of getting into an Olympic team he would have to train with the BJA against the wishes of his

father. Robin began to training at the Budokwai along with people like Brian Jacks and Angelo Parisi, who

were to become great champions. Robins sights were set firmly on the great men of the day, knowing that he

would have to become as good as them if he were to have a chance of Olympic glory. Then fate struck a blow

to Robins ambitions when he suffered knee cartilage problems and had it removed. This was to put an end to

his dreams of the Olympics as he could no longer train hard for competition at that level.

It was 1965 and Robin was ready to get back to the spiritual side of the martial arts and spent time

training in Aikido. By the summer he was back within the BJC and was awarded his 3rd Dan by 7Abbe sensei

Robin and his family ( wife Christine and four children) moved to north Devon in 1977, shortly after the death

of his father. It was now that Robin would take up the Presidency of the BJC although reluctantly at first.

It was felt among senior grades in the BJC that he was a natural successor (his eldest brother Billy having

been tragically killed in a car accident) to Masutaro Otani . Robin wanted to ensure that the principles and

philosophies of Kyu-shin-do on which the BJC was founded by Abbe and his father would

remain a strong part of the BJC judo so he took up the post. Robin continued to compete for the BJC until

1977 at home and abroad winning many Golds. After his operation on his left knee, his supporting leg, he

changed his style to left handed techniques enabling him to use the right leg for support whilst executing

throws. He believes that if he had been able to continue the training in the 60’s he may well have

represented Britain at the highest level.

What Robin Otani has achieved is maintain judo as a real and viable martial art and kept alive

a philosophy. The combination of both physical and mental education ensures the growth of all those who

become his students. “The study of judo should be the study of life” has always been Robins belief. Watching

him on the mat at St Ives recently one can see the appreciation of the teaching he has received. A man of

reasonably large stature, his actions are smooth and gentle ,flowing together, allowing the technique to

Produce the result, not physical strength. Minimum effort– maximum effect.

In 1995 the BJC and BJA after a long discussion process. Came to an affiliation agreement designed to allow

more interaction between the two groups, partially at contest level. BJC players should now be able to go on

and compete internationally for the Great Britain team without having to rescind their BJC membership as has

been the case since 1962.

Today Robin is now the highest grade in the BJC
