Tulipanes

JARDÍNLugar donde se han cultivado todas las flores, frutos y plantas que aparecen en las fotografías. El jardín es el lugar donde empieza el proceso creativo, consistente en cultivar determinadas especies para luego trabajar con ellas, componiendo guirnaldas y naturalezas muertas, comparando conceptos y visiones entre el ámbito artístico y el botánico y reinterpretando los modos constructivos y el modelo poético de la pintura de flores.

GARDENPlace where all the flowers, fruits and plants shown in the photographs have been cultivated.The garden is the place where the creative process starts. This consists on cultivating chosen species in order to work with them, creating garlands and still live compositions, comparing concepts and visions between the worlds of art and botany and reinterpreting the construction methods and the poetic model related to the painting of flowers.

En octubre preparo el terreno y lo abono. Después voy plantando los bulbos, haciendo grupos por colores y tamaños: un macizo de rojo intenso, otros morados, blancos sencillos ( puríssima ), blancos con una raya verde ( spring green ) y blancos con los bordes rizados ( papagayo ) delante. Morados, casi azules, con alguno rojo, cerca unos naranja bordeados de amarillo. Y los negros, el queen of nigth , que saldrán los últimos. En total calculo que tendré unas 500 flores. En enero asoman los ápices, todos parecen iguales y ya no recuerdo con exactitud dónde está cada uno. Empieza la espera. Por la forma de las hojas se van adivinando los papagayo . Marzo. Las flores han crecido y empiezan a abrirse. Los primeros tulipanes son unos pequeños con forma de lis, los turquestánica , que cuando se abren tienen forma de estrella, siguen los demás y pronto hay una gran mancha roja y morada. Los blancos salen delante, y entre ellos veo unos pequeños con llamas rojas. Son rembrandt, los más pintados en los cuadros de flores, quedaron los bulbos enterrados del año pasado y no creí que florecieran. Hay que estar al acecho para no perderse los cambios que se producen a lo largo del día en cada flor, según la temperatura y la luz...

In October I prepare the soil and fertilize it.Later, I start planting the bulbs, making clusters arranged by colour and size: a clump of intense red, some purple, simple white (purissima), white with a green stripe (spring green) and white of wrinkled edges (parrot) at the front. Purple, nearly blue, with some red, near orange of yellow edges. And the black ones, the queen of night, that will come out the last ones.In total I figure that I shall have about 500 flowers.In January the apices are beginning to show, they all seem identical and now I cannot longer remember where each one exactly is. The waiting begins. By the shape of the leaves, the parrot can be guessed.March. The flowers have grown and start opening. The firs tulips are small with a lis shape, (turquestanica), when they open, they do so on a star shape. The rest follow and soon there is a big red and purple patch. The white ones come at the front and among them, I see some small ones with red flames. They are rembrandt, the most used in flower paintings. The bulbs were buried last year and I didn't think they would flower.One has to be on the watch not to miss the changes that happen during the day in each flower depending on temperature and light.

…A finales de febrero florecen los dos primeros narcisos y también algunos crocos amarillos y morados. Unos días después salen los crocos pickwic, con rayas violetas sobre fondo blanco. El 20 de marzo cae una ligera nevada, ya están florecidos los jacintos que, con la nieve, presentan un aspecto bellísimo. Poco después empiezan a florecer los tulipanes. Los primeros son los botánica, rosados y amarillos, después los papagayo negros, naranjas y rojos. Les siguen los viridiflora, de pétalos blancos y rosados, con una estría verde brillante. Los rembrandt son más tardíos, y cuando aparecen los capullos no se ven las llamas que los caracterizan. Solamente cuando la flor es grande empieza a extenderse por los pétalos una red de venas rojas que va cambiando al púrpura al tiempo que los pétalos de alguno se van rizando. En abril florecen los tulipanes triunfo, rojos, amarillos y morados… A primeros de mayo se abren las flores de las anémonas moradas, rosas y blancas, que son espléndidas, pero no así las rojas (aquellas enormes que fueron tan dibujadas): estoy a la espera...

...At the end of February the first two daffodils bloom and also some purple and yellow crocos flower. A few days later the crocos pickwic come out, with purple stripes on a white background.On the 20th of March there is a light snow fall and the hyacints, already flowered, look extremely beautiful due to the snow.A little later the tulips begin to bloom. The first ones are botany, pinkish and yellow, then the black, orange and red parrot. The viridiflora are to follow, with white and pinkish petals and a bright green groove.The rembrandt are late to arrive and when the buds show up the characteristic flames can't be seen. Only when the flower is big, the flame begin to grow through the petal, a net of red vessels that change to purple and at the same time the petal starts to wrinkle.In April the triunph tulips bloom, red, yellow, purple...At the beginning of May the flowers of the purple, pink and white anemones open, they are splendid, but not the red ones, (the big ones so many a time drawn): I am in the waiting...

Cada vez encuentro mas belleza en las flores que, ya sin pétalos muestran todo su interior, y observo el proceso que sigue cada una para multiplicarse. (Bataille se lo pierde) En la anémona se va hinchando la redecilla y salen semillas que parecen pequeñísimos insectos marrones con patas blancas como pelusas, que forman un globo alrededor.

Increasingly I find more beauty in the flowers that, once without petals, show all its inside. Then I observe the process that they follow to multiply themselves. (Bataille misses that). In the anemone, the small web swells and seeds come out, these look like very little insects of white legs like fluff.

La jara blanca (Cistus laurifolius) es la que tengo. Me gustaría también conseguir la Jara de las Cinco Llagas ( Cistus ladanifer ) que pinta Rachel Ruysch, acompañada de enormes amapolas “de raza” y un lirio pétreo. Los pétalos, al igual que los de amapola, son finísimos, y nacen arrugados, es como una tela de araña de pliegues. Tocar la flor resulta tan complicado como manipular el pan de oro, se quedan pegados a los dedos y si la flor está madura, suelta gran cantidad de polen (es amarillo, el de las amapolas es verde). Empiezo a montar amapolas en horizontal, pensando en un retablo. Dejo una flor de ranúnculo y una rosa, las dos rojas, el ranúnculo se diferencia poco de las amapolas. La jara y las silvestres azules quedan a la derecha de la imagen.

The white cistus or white rock rose (Cistus laurifolius) is the one that I have. I'd like to get the Cistus of the Five Wounds (Cistus ladanifer), painted by Rachel Ruysch, in company of huge poppys “of race” and a petrus lilly.The petals, as the poppy ones, are extremely thin, and are born wrinkled, like a neatly folded spider's web. Touching the flower seems as complicated as manipulating gold leaf, they remain glued to the fingers and if the flower is mature, releases a great quantity of pollen (this is yellow, the poppy's one is green).I start mounting the poppys horizontally, thinking of a retable. I leave a ranunculus flower and a rose, both of a red colour; there is a small difference between ranunculus and poppys. The cistus and the blue wilds stay on the right side of the image.
