Thank you to all members who attended the Annual Meeting. We were glad to share with you the news that the Club well exceeded its 2012 financial goals and is well positioned for the future. This success is a testament to Carmel’s
continued commitment to our Mission Statement of being the preeminent family club in Charlotte and management’s dedication to executing against it.
In addition to the normal operational matters of the Club, each year the Board de-velops a list of initiatives for management to adopt and implement. For those of you who were unable to attend the Annual Meeting, I would like to summarize a few of these initiatives:
Re-Opening of the Tennis Complex - March finds us a few weeks from the opening of our new tennis complex. To celebrate this event, Carmel will host a Grand Re-Opening event at the tennis complex on March 23. Please plan to attend.
Planning of the future Clubhouse Renovation - In December 2011, the Board approved funding to prepare a master architectural plan for the renovation of the Clubhouse. The architectural firm of Chapman, Coyle & Chapman began work in February with a targeted completion date of August 2012. Management, the Board and various committees will be involved in the development of this plan.
Communication - Continuing with the communication theme adopted by Jack Morgan with his fireside chats, the Board has requested the Communication and Marketing Committee to develop an interactive channel for members to present questions or comments directly to the Board for a response.
Clubhouse Services - In 2012, the Board has created a new committee to analyze existing clubhouse and dining operations and make recommendations for improvement. This committee will be populated with industry experts who will assist management in identifying cost savings and operational efficiencies. The Board’s hope is that any substantial cost savings would be considered to fund expanded ser-vice offerings at the Club.
Long Range Plan - With the completion of the master plan for the Club-house, the Board will present a revised 10 year strategic plan to the membership in the fourth quarter of 2012. The revised plan will include plans for the renovation of the Clubhouse; improvements to the North Course, driving range and practice area; and targeted membership and financial goals.
As we progress with these initiatives, we will provide updates in e-blasts and future Carmelines. Comments with respect to either the initiatives listed above or other matters impacting the Club are appreciated.
See you at the Club,

Sean Nowak, from Kobrand, will be on hand to host this wine dinner, featuring the outstanding wines from Cakebread. Over 38 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while here, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born. Cakebread wines have a loyal following and they continue to garner rave reviews from the critics. This evening’s dinner will feature Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Carmel’s Elite EightThis year Carmel Country Club plays host the prestigious North Carolina Junior State Championship during the week of June 18-22nd. This presents a unique opportunity for Carmel Country Club’s juniors to win the event on their home turf. I always knew that we had a strong group of junior golfers among our club’s membership, but what I found out might surprise you. Ac-cording to the authority of junior golf rankings ( Junior Golf Scoreboard – JGS ) Carmel CC has eight of the top 160 players in the state! Seven of them are within the top 100, five are in the top 50 and three of them are ranked top 20 in North Carolina. These remarkable juniors are not only gifted athletes, but also excellent students as well. They are sure to put on an impressive show when the NC Junior visits Carmel CC this summer. Next time you see one of them around give ‘em a pat on the back and let them know they make us proud!

Carmel Senior Golf Association (CSGA) - OMEGAYou are invited to join the CSGA this coming season. To be eligible you must be 55 years of age or older. The season starts in March with 10 matches (5 home - 5 away) and ends in September with the playoffs in October. All home matches are on Thursday with away matches on Wednesday or Thursday.
As in previous years there will be qualifying dogfights with both team and individual formats. An Omega “trial” change for this coming year will be two man match play vs the traditional one man match play that currently exsists under Omega by-laws. The Omega Council believes this will be more enjoyable, less stressful, and potentially reduce time required to play a round of golf.
Annual dues are $75 (no change) covering prepaid lunches for Carmel members and their guests on the day of competi-tion. Away matches the host club will pay for lunch and you pay cart fee only - no greens fee. There is an All Club Tour-nament for those that qualify at the end of the year with lunch and prizes. Carmel also has an end of the year dogfight final “play with the pro” with lunch and prizes. Sign up in the men’s locker room at the CSGA information station.
If you want additional information contact Dan Isaacs in the golf shop or Rich Carbonara at e-mail [email protected] or Bud Pinger email [email protected].

Mini Stars (ages 3 and 4) Mondays and Wednesdays 2:15-2:45 Session 1 April 2-April 23 $48.00 per child or $8.00 drop-in rateSession 2 April 30-May 21 $48.00 per child or $8.00 drop-in rate
Our goal with this introductory clinic is to make the court a fun place to be! We will focus on tossing and catching drills, hand/eye coordination and moving our feet. We will practice listening to our coaches and introduce the idea of score keep-ing by catching the red foam balls. The juniors in this clinic will need a 19” racquet in order to participate.
Bright Stars (ages 5 and 6) Mondays and Wednesdays 3:15-3:45Session 1 April 2-April 23 $48.00 per child or $8.00 drop-in rateSession 2 April 30-May 21 $48.00 per child or $8.00 drop-in rate
In this clinic the juniors will start to develop basic forehands, backhands, volleys and serves while using the correct grips. They will continue to work on movement, balance, agility and hand eye coordination while beginning to understand about the flight of the ball. The learning in this session is made easier and more fun by continuing to use a variety of games while ensuring each child’s success. The children will be us-ing a red foam ball and will be on a 36’ court and must have a 21” racquet to participate.
Future Stars (ages 7-8) Mondays and Wednesdays 3:45-4:30Session 1 April 2-April 23 $64.00 per child or $10.00 drop-in rateSession 2 April 30-May 21 $64.00 per child or $10.00 drop-in rate Juniors in this clinic will be continuing to develop their fore-hands, backhands, volleys and serves and learning to execute simple tactics. The development at this level allows for an “all-court” game style with net play, but with a ¾ size court. Full tennis rules begin to apply with no-ad games and shorter sets. This group will be using the red quick start ball on the 36’ court and they must have a 23” racquet in order to partici-pate.
Shooting Stars (ages 9-10) Mondays and Wednesdays 4:30-5:30Session 1 April 2-April 23 $80.00 per child or $12.00 drop-in rateSession 2 April 30-May 21 $80.00 per child or $12.00 drop-in rate
In theses sessions, we are learning athletic skills required in tennis combined with learning how to think quickly, listen and work in a group. This level moves up to the orange ball and the 60’ size court and would use a 25” racquet in order to partici-pate.
Shining Stars (ages 11-12) Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:45-5:00Session 1 April 3-April 24 $96.00 per child or $14.00 drop-in rateSession 2 May 1-May 22 $96.00 per child or $14.00 drop-in rate
This is the perfect clinic for adolescents who have not previ-ously been introduced or exposed to the game of tennis. By combining exercises that emphasize general skill development with stroke development, your child will be rallying in no time! This clinic will be on a full size court while hitting a green dot ball and the child would use either a 25” racquet or a 27” racquet depending on their size.
Super Stars (ages 12 and up) Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00-6:30Session 1 April 3-April 24 $120.00 per child or $17.00 drop-in rateSession 2 May 1-May 22 $120.00 per child or $17.00 drop-in rate
After “graduating” from the progressive tennis, the children in this clinic will be fully developed to successfully use regular balls and play on full size courts. Focus is primarily on tactical aspects of the game mixed with technical development. Foot-work, agility and strength development will also be incorpo-rated.
Tennis Clinics
Quick Start Tennis is an exciting new play format for learning tennis, designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size. It is divided into two different levels—ages 8 and under and ages 10 and under. Even though children ages 8 and under play on the same sized 36' court, there are recommended balls, racquets and training guides for the 6 and under age group. ~ Per the USTA.

9 Holers 18 HolersCarmel ladies gather for a Christmas luncheon and ornament exchange.
Winter is ending and it is time to gear up for the 2012 Ladies Golf Association’s new year. The women will be gathering in the Carmel ballroom
on March 6th for the kickoff luncheon and festivities. We are always happy to have new members join our group. If you have any questions , please call New Member Coordinator Leslie Estelle at 704-541-6962. The Social Committee has been planning numerous fun-filled events for the year and we don’t want you to miss out!
The Annual Girl’s Golf trip is making a return trip to the Pinehurst area. People enjoyed it so much last year, that the events chairs- Lauren Helbein and Barb Nash – have booked our return visit. We will be leaving on Monday April 30 for three days of golf. Check the locker room for more details.
It’s Sadie Hawkins Time—March 27—cel-ebrate Master’s Moments!!Who can forget the 1935 Masters , Gene Sarazen’s “the shot heard round the world” - a 225 yard 4 wood on the par 5 15th hole that went in for a very rare double eagle, or Tiger Woods stunning 12 shot victory in his very first Masters in 1997, or Jack Nicklaus’ 1986 Masters win making him the oldest champion at 46. You will have a chance to relive these memories and create some of your own during the SADIE HAWKINS MASTERS MOMENTS Tournament to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 on the South Course. So go ask your favorite man to join you and sign up in the Locker Room. Let’s make this SADIE HAWKINS the best ever!
On a sad note, Carmel lost long-time employee Joe Booker. A week before he passed, over 25 of the 18 hole ladies went to his home to sing Christmas carols . It was a very special visit . We will all miss talking and joking with our friend Joe.
Kick Off Luncheon -- March 14thThe scene is being set for a kick off luncheon that will start our 2012 season off with drama! The players/officers have been feeverishly working backstage to bring you a day you won’t want to miss! Join us for an event full of MYSTERY, MAY-HEM AND KILLER GOLF on March 14th. Call, 704/945-3300, or drop by the Pro Shop to sign up.
Here she is, our “adopted” Southeastern Guide dog! In 2010, Debra Nash hosted the event “Dog Days of Summer”, introducing us to some of the dogs and their owners and their special training. We received donations from 9 Holers as well as other club members and raised over $3,000! A Carmel-wide con-test was held to name the puppy and “Birdie”
was the winner--after all, who wants a Bogie or a Divot?! Birdie is on her way to puppy training this spring--we’ll keep you posted on her progress!
Spring PreviewAll of us on the board of the 9 Holer golf association are looking forward to a great year. We are still looking for volunteers to get involved--we promise you will have more fun if you do! A number of events after May have open-ings for volunteers. Contact Susan Hoppe,[email protected]/704.904.9211 or Cindy Schlicksup [email protected]/704.542.3090 to for details. Come on, you know you want to :) Be sure to plan ahead for the Member/Guest day and ask a friend to join you--it’s great hospitality!March 14 -- kick-off luncheonApril 18 -- Member/GuestMay 9 -- Evening Event hosted by Deb McNealy, Woods Potts, Lindsay Stroker and karen Verhagen
Thanks to Carla Parks and Sue Evans, those of us who were able to attend the Christmas luncheon received a cute sports watch, and were smartly informed via Susan Belsante’s poem to be sure TO BE ON TIME for all 9 Holer events this year!
Watch Your Emails!!! We will be using email to communicate reminders and upcom-ing event details, so it’s important that you check yours and give us corrections to your address! If you do not use email, you will need to check information on the bulletin board in the locker room. Email Cindy Schlicksup with questions or cor-rections. If you have any updates to the directory please email Cindy with your edits.

Tennis “Grand Slam” Opening WeekendThe Courts are Now in Session!Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24
Carmel’s renovated Tennis Courts will have an official “Grand Slam” Reopening Celebration the weekend of March 23 & 24. The weekend will commence on Friday, March 23 at 6pm. There will be 3 levels of tennis exhibitions: from the Juniors at 6pm, through the Pros at 6:30pm to a Celebrity Match at 7pm. Additionally, immedi-ately before the 7pm match, there will be an of-ficial “Net Cutting” Ceremony and a Champagne Toast!
To add to the atmosphere, Chef Vergili and the Carmel staff will provide delicious food and beverage throughout the evening. Some of the tempting items will be Carved Beef Tenderloin, Lettuce Wraps, Chopped Salad, Crab Cakes with Remoulade, Chicken Kabobs and Seared Scallops. Additionally, your thirst will be quenched with beer, wine and special “John McEnroes”!
The festivities will continue on Saturday, March 24, with Tennis “Station” Clinics—all organized by the Director of Tennis, Katie Carpenter! Children and juniors will play from 9am-12pm, and adults will play in the afternoon, 1-4pm. From 4-6pm there will be Adult Round Robin match-ups, again organized by Katie. At 6pm the Celebration weekend will wrap-up with a Tradi-tional Southern-Style BBQ, all the while listening to a Bluegrass band!
We look forward to you helping Carmel celebrate this very special weekend! Reservations are re-quired and easy to make online!
