Carol Henry has been exhibiting in renowned photo galleries both locally and afar for over 20 years, known as the “Cibachrome O’Keeffe” for her passionate plant studies. Together they bring a cohesive creative background to teaching and arts advocacy.

A successful watercolor painting integrates the traditional concerns of composition, drawing, value, and color with the unique qualities of watercolor paint and paper. The students in Carolyn Lord’s watercolor

workshop will learn through lecture and demonstrations about the direct approach that typifies the California style of watercolor painting. There will be 3 days of studio and plein air painting.

Carolyn Lord’s paintings reflect her personal interests with paintings of gardens, landscape and vernacular architecture. Whereas watercolor is her main media, her experience with oil painting and ateliers means she is able to adapt her painting concepts to artists who are crossing over to watercolor for the first time.

Carolyn Lord is a Signature member of both the California Art Club and The National Watercolor Society. www.carolynlord.com

Join Warren, an award win-ning artist with over 30 years of experience, for an ongoing Tuesday night class in work-ing from the portrait and figure. All lev-els welcome, beginning, intermediate and advanced.

Working from the “live” model, students will work regularly from the model ( portrait and figure poses) in both drawing and painting, based upon the level of each student. The basic fundamentals of understand-ing light and shadow and how they apply to all things, figure, still life and landscape will be emphasized. Frequent instructor demonstrations.

Landscape painting is mostly about learning how to see; how to interpret, compare and edit the shapes and colors of the scene we choose to paint. We will try to see things less literally, but in more of an “Abstract” way. In other words to not see literally the mountains, trees, grass, water, etc. but to see them as an interesting and beautiful arrangement of shapes and colors. This is to see them more as an artist and it then opens up a whole lot more possibilities for things to

paint and I think also helps us find our own voice. We will concentrate on the process of painting and not be so concerned with doing “finished” paintings, and I feel it frees us up to learn with less pressure. We will work on what makes a plein air painting work; the mood, rhythm and movement along with an interesting and compelling arrangement of values, masses and color. I will do class demonstrations and will work with each individual as to their own personal needs. We will have some group critiques. Bring a sense of humor, we will work hard and have a good time doing it.www.nedmueller.com

A great portrait is usually a well structured, expressive work of art; full of character, volume and good design. This class will stress the learning process to achieve this goal; from basic proportions, structure and value relationships for the beginner, to full color portraits with emphasis on enhancing values, color and design for intermediate and advanced students. We will talk as much about creating a work of art as making a good portrait. We will also talk about

the process of learning to see, not to copy, but how to interpret. Good design is related to good drawing, and to me good drawing enhances good judgment and good taste; knowing what to put in, as well as what to leave out. Drawing and painting is the process of getting the simple things right first and with experience the rest with a little care usually takes care of itself. I encourage the students to loosen up, make mistakes, enjoy the process, have some fun and work hard. You will gain a lot of confidence that will translate into your other work. www.nedmueller.com

“After decades of experimentation, I have chosen Rembrandt extra-ne oil paints for the majority of the pigments on my palette. Their vast selection of transparent and semi-transparent colors are wonderful for glazing and get more vibrant with the addition of white or other opaque colors.

Rembrandt’s Cadmium and Cobalt colors are unsurpassed in quality and consistently. I have tried almost every brand of paint out there and for me Rembrandt is an unsurpassed combination of

quality and value.”Michael Mentler Founder of The Society of Figurative Arts tsofa.com

The Pocket Sketching workshop: This quick-draw technique allows anyone to “journal” wherever they are using only a 4 x 6 art pad, a pen, a small paint set, a brush and a film canister of water. Perfect for hiking, sitting in a cafe or standing

in line — take it anywhere, whip it out in a minute, and preserve a memory in 25 minutes or less. With a pocket sketch it’s more about capturing the “feel” of a place rather than simply taking a camera image. This workshop is ideal for timid beginners who want to fearlessly paint in public, for experienced artists who want minimal equipment with no clean-up, and for anyone wanting a truly intimate record of what you think you see. Interactive critiques and demonstrations are both given constantly. Each person says what they want from the workshop at the beginning: individual needs are constantly addressed so people achieve in a very positive, personal, atmosphere.

In this 3-day workshop, students will learn the art of the still-life in the “chiaroscuro” (or “light-and-shadow”) manner of the Dutch Masters. Special attention will be given to design, structure, form,

value, edges, and sculptural brushstroke. The workshop will begin with an instructor demo on the first morning, during which Mr. Siegel will explain his approach to painting as well as his material preferences. Students will then go on to paint between 1-2 still-life paintings from a live setup. Mr. Siegel will give personalized critiques to each student individually throughout the class. www.siegelfineart.com

Learn to paint en plein air in the most direct way possible using outdoor alla prima techniques developed by Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Learn to paint rapidly and with more confidence so you can capture the fleeting effects of natural light and emotional atmosphere.

Thomas will present on-site demonstrations and offer individualized instruction that focuses on how to simplify what you see. He will also teach you how to quickly block in a dynamic composition using a Notan, how to mix and harmonize your color using a spectral palette, how to build a painting from thin to thick, how selective focus can be used to lead the eye – and when your painting is ready for your final touches of bravura brushwork! Expect to have fun during this workshop and learn a lot about painting as you do! www.thomaskitts.com

Thomas Jefferson Kitts Essential Plein Air PaintingSeptember 8–10, 2014 • $375

During this plein air painting workshop, founding president of the Laguna Plein Air painters Association, Saim Caglayan will concentrate on three main elements in plein air painting:

COMPOSITION — Strong composition contains a sound perspective, balance and harmony. Perspective provides sense of depth and movement. We will make several small, quick pencil, charcoal studies of our subject on a sketch pad before proceeding on canvas and choose the most successful one to be put on our canvas.

VALUE — We will also do a value study of our subject using a single dark color wash to get familiar with the light and dark areas and the mid tones in our painting. Correct value will result in spatial depth and the light source which is essential in painting. Looking at the subject while squinting the eye will eliminate details, simplify the masses, therefore making it easy to see the value scale of the scene before us.

COLOR — Saim has found that in many years of teaching, color mixing is very challenging especially for the beginner. It takes years to learn how to mix colors quickly and accurately. To simplify this process he will employ only four colors, 1. White, 2. Blue, 3. Yellow, 4. Red, We will mix rest of the colors using only these primary colors and white. This method, known as the limited palette, will give us the color harmony which is difficult to achieve when there are too many colors on our palette. www.saimcaglayan.com

Is this you? As an artist you know you see differently than the rest of the world; you feel inspired and excited by scenes and cannot wait to paint them. Throughout your painting, you loathe some passages, wonder if others are finished or overworked, and live in fear that you will “mess up” the very best parts of the painting that you actually like. In the end, your completed works do not convey your

original inspiration or excitement.

Brushwork, paint consistency, and fearlessness are rarely taught. Lori Putnam believes they are essential to mastering more thrilling paintings. In this workshop, students will begin en plein air making many sketches, grasping

excitement, and capturing ideas. These sketches (most with little or no detail) will then be used as inspirational material for more-complete studio pieces that remain fresh and inviting.www.loriputnum.com

California Art Club Gold Medal winner, Ruo Li will talk about and demonstrate the most important aspects of seascape paintings.

He will also introduce his painting procedure and methods of studio seascape paintings.

Day 1 — Rou Li will do a morning lecture and afternoon demonstration in the studio. Students may work on their own painting in the afternoon. Day 2 — Ruo Li will bring several different seascape photos for students to choose. Students will start their own seascape paintings with these photo reference inside the studio. Ruo Li will move around to give individual instructions and critics.

Day 3 — Ruo Li will take students to a Carmel beach to do plein air painting. He will paint himself and move around to teach students individually.
