A m eeting to consider the form ation o f si Red Cross Chapter in Carm el was held last Thursday at the stu dio o f M iss J. M. C u lbertson. Miss C ulbertson was made tem porary ehairmnn.

There is work for those w iio sew, for those w ho knit, for those w ho | eau d o neither. Tn fact, everyone can find the opportunity to lend the h e lp isg hand.
T h e o b je c t o f the Red Cross is relief and aid. and in addition to the active work in disasters and war, a great deal has been a ccom plished in preventive work, as iu first aid classes, notably am ong railroad men. Auother great national asset is the Tow n and C ountry N ursing Service, whose branches are too num erous to muntiou.
After much inspiring talk, the chairm an inquired if it was the de sire o f those present to form a C armel chapter. It was unanim ously decided to d o so.
Mrs. P h ilip W ilson and M is E.F . Farrington were m ade a co m m ittee on nom ination o f officers.
A central m eeting place where workers cou ld d rop in at any lime was considered an advantage. Mrs. Puilau and M iss L . Lichteutlialor are a com m ittee to secure such a room

Men o f Carm el are not excluded from this ph ilanthropic enterprise and they are invited to make known their interest by jo in in g .
Coast Section Likely to Have Floods
Perry H ill, United States forest r a n g e r , w ho lias returned from the section dow n the coast where the recent great lires have prevailed, has expressed the op in ion thut a portiou o f the B ig Sur waterehed was so badly devastated iu the country south o f Carm el that that section will suffer considerab ly in the event o f a severe winter.
T h e lires iu the C one Peak and Carm el watershed sections south o f here have been com pletely ex tingu ished . In fact, the main e fforts o f the fire fighters were cen tered upon preventing the burning o f the Carm el watershed, and this was accom plished.

A Joke on TurnerSir Edwin Landseer, whose pic
ture, “The Monarch of the Glen,” changed hands recently, once perpetrated a joke on Turner which came out far otherwise than was expected. It was varnudnik: day at the Loyal Academy, and Turner, who was preparing to varnish his picture, “ The Terrace at .Mortlake,” had gone to lunch: Landseer saw his opportunity. He seized a piece of paper, cut out a small dog, painted it black, and stuck it on the “ Terrace'* in the painting. There was much expectation of a stirring scene when Turner came hack, hut the great landscape painter disappointed it. He looked at the little dog as if he had always known of its existence, adjusted it to lit in better with the scheme of things, and then varnished the picture. And there the dog remains to this day.—Ohristion Science Monitor.

A loyal citizen is one who does his trading at home.
The m e r c h a n t who is the greatest benefit to a town is t h e one who patronizes his fellow home merchant and instructs his help to “buy at home.”
By helping your neighbor in business you are helping yourself.
Why purchase from an outside solicitor when he pays nothing towards the police and fire protection of your city.
When you increase the pay roll of a local establishment with your patronage you are increasing the ' prosperity of your town and at the same time helping your own business.
