for big thinkers.
Carlow University A SMALL SCHOOL
for big thinkers.Situated on a small hilltop at the edge of Oakland—just
overlooking downtown Pittsburgh—Carlow University
is rooted in tradition and reaching toward the future.
Our student-centered culture and commitment to
providing a transformational education are just a few of
the reasons why students and families from Pennsylvania
and around the world choose us year after year.
At Carlow, the “right answer” is only part of
the equation. Learning how to shape questions, how
to tackle deep-seated problems, and how to affect
change is always part of the bigger picture.
Carlow is a special place for special students (like you!).
We look for young women and men who share
our commitment to making the world a better
place for themselves and others. Before long
you’ll become part of the fabric of the Carlow
community. Your professors will become
mentors, your classmates will become friends,
and your friends will become family.
And when it’s time to leave, you’ll be
career-ready, prepared not just for a career
when you graduate, but for opportunities
that don’t even exist yet. Your Carlow
experience will provide and help you build
connections— through alumni, faculty,
internships, and programs—that will last a
lifetime. And that is the Carlow Difference!
THE CARLOW DIFFERENCE.
“I love the instructors’willingness to provide
any help needed—inside and outside of the classroom.”
Phoenix MooreClass of 2014
“Having small classes was important to me. You need to have that kind of connection with your professors.”
— Emily Wasel Social Work, Class of 2012
“We have a strong liberal arts foundation that gives our students the basic skill set that we know employers want. With the service-learning component, we’re able to extend our scholarly knowledge into the practical world, linking the curriculum to the community—it’s a transformational experience.”
Allyson Lowe, PhDPolitical Science
Lowe’s expertise in gendered policy development in the European Union and concern with marginalized populations brings a global focus to her work with students interested in political science and pre-law.
NOT JUST PROFESSORS ...
people who care.
“Being a professional artist models professional behavior for students. It shows them that I am a practicing professional as well as a professor, and helps keep me current as an artist, which is a big benefit to them.”
Dale Huffman, MFAArt
As a professor and professional potter, Huffman uses his international connections to take his students abroad to help build kilns and hone their craft.
Carlow University president Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD, greets students on the campus green.
“I really believe that we as human beings injure each other; I don’t think we always do it intentionally. My hope is that I can help be instructional in how we can heal through each other.”
Mary Burke, PhDCounseling
Burke, a beloved professor of counseling, founded and directs the Project to End Human Trafficking, a U.S.-based nonprofit group working to raise awareness about the enslavement and economic exploitation of human beings.
“We know that innovative teaching methodologies are critical, not only for enhancing the skills of our future nurses, but for enhancing the quality of care that they’ll deliver to future patients.”
Cindy Fickley DNP, MSN, BSN, RNUndergraduate Nursing
Fickley’s specialty is pediatric nursing, with a focus on simulation technology learning and medication calculations.
“Social work is ‘big-picture’ work—we help the most vulnerable, and believe in the dignity of all people.”
Jessica Friedrichs, MSW, MPASocial Work
For Friedrichs–who spent four years facilitating and co-teaching global service-learning courses in Bolivia, Tanzania, Northern Ireland, Jamaica, and the Navajo Nation before coming to Carlow—the big picture means making connections so that she can best reach those in need—and teach others to do the same.
“You need to look for interesting opportunities. Meet people you might never have met. See a movie that you might not typically go to. Do things you wouldn’t usually do. Otherwise, nothing new will ever happen.”
Enrique Mu, PhD, MBA, MSManagement
Mu’s expertise in Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a prioritization and selection methodology, is at the heart of a brand new study that has caught the eye of the international law enforcement community.
Our classes are taught by faculty members who are not only experts in their fields, but who exhibit an ardent, deeply-rooted commitment to the practice of teaching.
Don’t have one yet? We’ll help you get there.
With more than 50 undergraduate majors, we offer a wide variety of programs, concentrations, certifications, and accelerated programs that turn a spark of curiosity into real-world skills that make a difference.
We work hard to foster the intellectual and
emotional growth of students both inside
and outside the classroom. To make all of
this possible, we invest in small classes,
passionate teachers, and a supportive
learning environment that allows for
flexibility and self-discovery—because
knowledge is gained not only through formal
instruction but also through experience,
collaboration, conversation, and reflection.
STUDY YOUR PASSION.
“Carlow is a great place to let your voice be heard, to be comfortable, and to have open dialog. The professors come from so many amazing walks of life, yet
they are dedicated to serving the under-served. You can really draw a relationship between what you
learn at Carlow and what is actually happening in the real world.”
Melinda WardSociology, Class of 2012
In November 2013, Melinda spent two weeks in the war-torn West Bank as part of an Interfaith Peace-Builders
delegation, observing conflict from both sides. She had the chance to meet with Palestinian and Israeli
activists, leaders, and officials and stayed with Palestinians in their village homes. Today, Melinda is a youth
counselor with Holy Family Institute, working with at-risk teenagers and Haitian refugees. Her goal?
Graduate school to study public policy and international affairs, of course.

DISCOVER YOUR MAJOR.
Carlow’s innovative and distinctive Compass core curriculum integrates liberal arts courses with specific, concrete learning outcomes in combination with a student’s major. While courses are liberal-arts based, they are also designed to assist students in honing the skills and abilities that employers consider to be critical in their employees: problem solving, critical thinking, and strong oral and written communication skills.

“The Carlow community is the whole reason I ended up doing psycholinguistic research this summer. My professors helped me through the entire application process, and now I have the opportunity to publish my own article on the subject. Getting published as an undergraduate is an amazing opportunity!”
Jalina McClarin Psychology, Class of 2015
Jalina participated in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation’s highly competitive Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) studying psycholinguis-tics—the interaction between language and cognitive processes—at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Whatever nickname you choose, there’s no denying that there’s something special happening at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela (Mah-non-gah-HAY-lah) rivers. It’s the hub of creativity and reinvention and a gateway to endless possibilities.
Pittsburgh is consistently ranked among America’s “best” cities: Most Livable (#1 in 2015, 2014 and 2011); Safest (#3 in 2013); Smartest (#1 in 2013); Greenest (#8 in 2014); and—aaah— Most Relaxed (#8 in 2014). It’s no wonder Pittsburgh serves as headquarters for some of our nation’s leading Fortune 500 businesses, including Alcoa, Heinz, and PPG Industries. Pittsburgh offers the cultural and professional opportunities of a major metropolitan area with the charm of a friendly, small town.
There’s a world-class cultural arts community right in our backyard, with museums, theaters, dance companies, and concert halls all within walking distance of Carlow’s campus. We’re home to more than 50 renowned hospitals and health systems, and recognized worldwide as a center for medical and technological innovation. Google lives here, along with more than 3,000 other research, development, and technology companies. And when the Steelers, Penguins, or Pirates are in town, things get even more exciting!

Carlow offers students all the traditional benefits of a liberal arts university—a welcoming, value-centered campus; small class sizes; close mentoring relationships between faculty and students; and a challenging academic environment—while also providing additional opportunities for experiential learning and research.
Choosing a college is an investment in your future, and Carlow takes that seriously by delivering a high-quality, personalized education to each student who sets foot on campus.
At Carlow, affordability is our primary focus. Many
Carlow students and their families rely on financial
aid to pay for their education—in fact, 100% of incoming
first-year students receive financial assistance,
including many who thought they simply couldn’t afford
to attend college.
In addition to federal and state financial aid
opportunities, Carlow offers need- and merit-based
aid to qualified students, including:
—Undergraduate awards and scholarships
—Athletic scholarships
—Need-based awards
—Carlow grants and discounts

THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU WILL EVER MAKE.
It’s no wonder Washington Monthly listed us (two years running!) among the top 20 “Best Bang-for-the-Buck”
private colleges in the country and Educate To Career listed
Carlow as a top 100 school for doing the best job of
preparing students to find well-paying jobs in their fields
after graduation.
“I chose Carlow because of the opportunity it afforded me to get to know my professors, to ask them questions, or to get their help after class. It was important to me that I would not be a number or just an anonymous face in class, and that my voice as a student would be heard.”
Jehosha Wright, Art Therapy, Class of 2015
Jehosha was not only a leader of the newly-formed men’s basketball team, he was also responsible for its formation. In 2012 he conducted a survey of the student body and discovered that the number one most requested new sport was men’s basketball. With this information, he lobbied the administration, and the rest, as they say, is history!
By becoming a scholar-athlete at Carlow, you’re encouraged to explore
the development of your unique athletic abilities, which will enhance
experiences during your time on campus and beyond.
With more than 40 athletes honored for outstanding academic and
athletic achievement by the NAIA and USCAA in the last year alone,
it’s no wonder the NAIA has designated Carlow University
a “Champions of Character” institution.

Chanessa Schuler knew she wanted a career in media. She also wanted to impact the world around her. Her current position as a multimedia specialist with the

Transforming Our WorldAt Carlow we work to provide transformational learning
experiences for our students while cultivating a culture
of caring both inside and outside the classroom. But it’s
not all books, all the time: your experience at Carlow
is the beginning of a process of life-long learning,
scholarship, and research.
To do this, we give it more than lip service: we’re
passionate about service-learning, a process of
educating through meaningful community service. It’s
an approach that works for our students and faculty,
and a philosophy that has guided Carlow University-
affiliated work for years, both locally and globally.
With this in mind, all students are invited and
encouraged to tend to their spiritual well-being by
participating in a variety of faith-formation and service
opportunities both on the Carlow campus and throughout
the Pittsburgh area. This might mean volunteering at a
soup kitchen, collecting blankets for the homeless, or
singing in the church choir—students choose from a
variety of activities and organizations that speak to the
mission and vision of our Catholic foundresses, the
Sisters of Mercy.
In 1843 a small group of Sisters of Mercy traveled from Carlow, Ireland, and arrived in Pittsburgh with a mission to serve the poor, the sick, and the uneducated. Like our students and alumni of today, they were risk-takers and life-changers.
After establishing numerous schools, an orphanage, and the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, the sisters founded Carlow University under the name of Mount Mercy College. In 1969, Mount Mercy College was renamed Carlow College.
In 2004, in recognition of our outstanding faculty and our commitment to innovative, diverse, and competitive programs on both the undergraduate and graduate level, Carlow was granted university status.
