“I believe that almost all our sadnesses are moments of tension that we "nd paralyzing because we
no longer hear our surprised feelings living.”
-Rilke
“In drawing, the trace always proceeds in the night: it always escapes the "eld of vision.”
-Calvino
Fleas interest me so muchthat I let them bite me for hours.
!ey are perfect, ancient, Sanskrit,machines that admit of no appeal.
!ey do not bite to eat,they bite only to jump;
they are the dancers of the celestial sphere,delicate acrobats
in the so#est and most profound circus;let them gallop on my skin,
divulge their emotions,amuse themselves with my blood,
but someone should introduce them to me.I want to know them closely,
I want to know what to rely on. -Neruda
!e beautiful, according to Edmund Burke, is what is
well formed and aesthetically pleasing, whereas the sublime
is what has the power to compel and destroy us.
What lies beneath the woodwork? You may be think-ing, “!at makes no sense!” You’re right, it doesn’t. May-be the pure and untouched minds of young people are enlightened, free from implantations of right and wrong, this and that. Perhaps we are in the darkness, and the tracings are dancing in the sunbeams. Who are we to know? Big words do not equate to good writing. Small crea-tures do not equate to mediocrity. All things compelling are not beautiful. Many things, not only the beautiful, have the power to compel. I do not understand most people. How can I be ex-pected to understand creatures which don’t even under-stand the world around them? Most of their minds are plagued and infected with fairy tales deemed socially ac-ceptable to believe in as adults, the only di$erence is that fairy tales better people while the former destroys them.
