CARLISLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT’SCAREER PATHWAYS PLANNER: “CHOICES, NOT CHANCES”

A Planner for Your Career Pathway

Choosing your future can be one of the most challenging and exciting decisions you have to make! You have the opportunity to choose yourfuture, not leave it to chance or luck. This Career Pathways Planner is designed to serve as a guide to match your high school program toyour career goals. To plan your career, you need to plan your high school program. The courses you take and your accomplishments in highschool should link to your career goal.

The word “career” implies more than just a job. It includes the education, work, and lifestyle you choose. Achieving success and asatisfying career takes planning, studying, training, and vision.

Your choice of courses now allows you to choose your career later.

For a better future, begin NOW to:1. explore the possibilities,2. determine your career pathway,3. choose courses which follow your career pathway, and4. learn what the workforce needs and expects of its employees.

The related courses listed for each career pathway are courses related directly to a career goal. You may change your focus during your highschool program, but having a goal will help you to select the best courses. The courses listed are available in grades 9 – 12. You shouldwork with your parents, teachers, and counselors to determine which ones are right for you.

How to use this Career Planner:

1. Read the information about each career and discover how what you like to do relates to various occupational areas.2. Consider each list of courses and read the course descriptions in the current Educational Planning Guide provided at school. Think

about each course and what it has to offer.3. Discuss your plans with parents/guardians, teachers, and your guidance counselor.4. Select one of the five overall pathways to follow.5. Next, determine which career concentration suits your career goal best. (The Discover Program and Expand Program in the

counseling centers and the COIN program in the West Library may help.)6. Identify your specific courses for next year and complete your course selection form by the due date.7. This guide is intended to help you plan an individualized program leading toward a career goal.

Note: All students graduating from the Carlisle Area School District must complete 4 years of English, 3 years of social studies, 3 years ofmath, 3 years of science, a 4th year of social studies, math, or science, 2 years of arts & humanities, 4 years of physical education, 1 course insafety education, and 2 courses of health. The courses listed on the following pages may not be compatible with individual schedules.Students are encouraged to take Diversified Occupations I & II, Career Exploratory Program, and Keyboarding/Word Processing. Also, students planning to pursue post-secondary education should examine academic requirements of post-secondary institutions. Students areresponsible for talking to counselors and teachers to determine which courses will best meet individual needs and requirements. Refer to thecurrent Education Planning Guide for additional help in examining the scope and sequence of courses.

In the “possible careers charts” on the following pages, you will see the terms “Semi-Skilled, Technical, and Professional.” Semi-skilledpositions are jobs most likely to begin employment immediately after high school. Technical occupations usually require advanced skill ortechnical training in a one or two-year or certificate post-secondary program. Professional level occupations usually require four or moreyears of college/university experience. Remember that most careers of the future will require some advanced training. Be prepared tocontinue your education in a variety of opportunities.
