Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Contract [11]Carlee Olsen
(AML)
AML is cancer of bone marrow and blood. It occurs in the spongy bone. It is one of the most common leukemia's and is very rare for humans under the age of 40.
What is It?
If you interact with certain drugs, chemicals or radiation you could get AML. If you have a blood disorder or a weak immune system due to an organ transplant, you have a high risk of getting AML. AML infects cells that would normally form into white blood cells. AML infects mostly immature cells .
How Do You Get It?
When AML infects the red blood cells, it is harming the circulatory system.
When it infects the white blood cells, it is infecting the immune system.
Unlike normal cells, AML cells will not die but instead they will multiply and invade or grow into other organ tissues. This is harmful to many of the systems.
How Does it Harm You?
Treatment for AML involves using medication to kill the infected cells. Some
of these medications might also kill uninfected cells. This will harm the
circulatory and immune system by killing good red and white blood cells. This may cause bleeding or strong risk of infection. Because of this you should stay away from other humans so you don’t get infections
when treating AML.
