The story of tea began in China. By accident it came into the Emperor’s bowl of hot water. He drank and he liked it!

After that lots of people started to write books about how to prepare it.

Then tea went to Japan and Korea. The Portuguese sailors were the first Europeans to

drink tea in China.

FROM THE TEA PLANT TO TEA POT

Page 17: Carla - afternoon tea

1º Tea grows best in places with warm, humid weather.

2º Tea can grow into all trees, but is generally kept as a small bush so that the leaves can be harvested more easily.

3º Tea bushes are grown in rows with about 1.5 metres between them. It takes at least three years before a newly planted tea bush is ready to be harvested.

Page 18: Carla - afternoon tea

4º Tea leaves are picked from the very top of the plant, every weeks or so.

5º The leaves are taken to a nearby factory, where they are left to dry.

6º Once dry, the leaves are rolled so as to release the moisture within.
