Your wellbeing weekend

The welfare of Queensland’s remote communities rests with rural doctors and their ability to provide continuity of care. It is an increasingly difficult role and burnout is commonplace. Estimates claim that one in three doctors are experiencing burnout at any time.Burnout causes many problems. Medical errors become more frequent while patient satisfaction decreases. A doctor’s job satisfaction plummets, which leads to absenteeism and doctors leaving the profession.

The Rural Medical Resilience Retreat is designed to build occupational resilience among rural doctors. The workshop is held over one weekend and introduces keynote speakers Professor Mark Craigie and Kellie Allen, two of Australia’s leading exponents of workplace health.

Building Occupational Resilience in Australia’s Rural DoctorsHosted by Emerald Medical Group and Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service, the workshop is part of a larger research program run by Central Highlands Healthcare and Central Queensland University. The program is exploring evidence based models to build workforce resilience and capacity, and as part of the workshop you will have the opportunity to contribute to the study.

To complement the academic content of the weekend, a number of guided walks in the Carnarvon National Park will be offered to all attendees.

Guided walks offer the opportunity to experience Australia’s rich heritage first-hand. You can marvel at centuries old Aboriginal art, take-in the full majesty of a natural amphitheatre while a climb up Boolimba Bluff rewards with a view of the plain that is everything but plain.

Keynote speakers

Dr Mark CraigieClinical PsychologistPhD, MPsych(Clinical), BSc(Hons)Member of Australian Psychological Society

Dr Mark Craigie is a clinical psychologist working in a private practice in Perth, as well as a co-director of Perth Mindfulness Centre, an organisation that aims to bring the benefits of mindfulness to the broader community and organisations operating in the Western Australia region.

Dr Craigie also works as an external consultant and clinical supervisor to The Marian Centre, a private psychiatric hospital, and holds a position as adjunct research fellow with the School of Psychology at Curtin University as part of the International Collaboration for Workforce Resiliency (ICWR) research project, now renamed as the International Research Consortium for the Promotion of Occupational Resilience (ICPOR).

In his research role, he has been involved in the publication of a number of research papers on how mindfulness can benefit nurses working in stressful environments. As such, a special area of interest has been the broader application of mindfulness to assist individuals working in stressful environments,

and how mindfulness training can be tailored to address both personal as well as organizational needs.

To the present time, Dr Craigie has facilitated more than 35 MBCT group programs for outpatients, has completed meditation and mindfulness training with Eric Harrison, and professional development with some of the lead MBCT trainers in the United Kingdom. He has also played a key role in investigating ways of building resilience in nurses to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout. In this capacity, he has participated in the design and implemented a series of evaluations of a mindfulness-based self-care and resiliency (MSCR) program that targets compassion fatigue in nurses working at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Most, recently he completed a series of MSCR workshops with rural nurses in Roma, Queensland as part of research project being conducted by the University of Southern Queensland. effective leaders are getting their message across and delivering positive impact to their peers and teams. Effective communication skills begin with single ‘intentional conversations’.

Understanding how to recognise personality, behavioural cues while observing your own ‘unhelpful stories’ which manifest within the brain will help you better connect with those whom you are communicating with.

Train the Trainer: In the past 10 years Kellie has delivered the Communication and Patient Safety (CAPS) program (8 hr content) to over 14,000 health care professionals across Australia.
