IT IS CLEAR that people are stillprepared to travel to the Caribbean. The region’s wonderful weather and

diverse experiences continue to make ithugely popular with travellers of all ages, budgets and interests despite theongoing economic crisis and its impacton UK holiday budget purse strings.

Limited results from the first quarterof 2011 allow us to see that visitornumbers remain steady and we areconfident that exciting new openings, renovations, flight routes and excellentvalue deals to the region, backed by ourfull marketing plan for the coming year, will continue to inspire people to visitand re-visit the region.

Here, at the Caribbean TourismOrganisation, we work with more than 30member destinations from all over theCaribbean, as well as airlines, cruisecompanies, tour operators andhoteliers. Our varied range ofmembers allows us to worktogether, tailoringinformation to our differentaudiences and obtaining amuch wider reach.

Over the last year, wehave lobbied hard against theair passenger duty rises thathave placed the Caribbean inan unfair tax band, puttingthe region at a disadvantageand harming Caribbeaneconomies. In March, wewitnessed our first

important, albeit small, victory in theCaribbean’s battle against APD.

George Osborne’s speech on 23 Marchacknowledged the anomaly in thecurrent APD banding system in which ahigher tax is placed on flights to theCaribbean than flights to California fromthe UK and also pledged not to increasethe tax further in the coming year. Thislittle bit of progress has given us hopeand we feel optimistic that over the nextyear, we will be able to contributetowards a fair revision of APD and furtherencourage travel to the Caribbean.

Over the coming year, we also hope togrow our membership and arrange anumber of events where we will be able tointeract directly with both consumers andthe media. We look forward to hosting ourannual Rum and Rhythm and Meet the

Media events this summer, as well asrunning a number of road shows

across the UK and trainingprogrammes in the Caribbeanthroughout the year. We are alsokeen to promote new andincreased flight routes, includingBritish Airways’ first direct flightto Puerto Rico which launched

in March, and KLM’s increasedservices to Aruba via the

Netherlands starting inOctober.

With all this inmind, we hope youwill agree that theCaribbean continues

to be an unrivalled year-rounddestination with plenty to recommend. You can find further information on ourwebsite www.caribbean.co.uk, throughour training programmes, tradenewsletters, or through our networkingevents within the Caribbean TourismOrganisation UK Chapter.
