Dear Customer

Welcome to Heinemann’s Caribbean Secondary catalogue for 2008!

This catalogue introduces you to our range of Caribbean publishing, but it does not stop there! We also work with prominent educators to publish local island-specific resources. Ask your local representative about these – you can find details of your representative on the inside back cover of this catalogue. In fact, if you have any queries regarding our resources, your local representative is always ready to help and just a quick phone call away.

We provide a variety of titles to support exam syllabuses across the Caribbean region. You will find a summary of these on page 3. Throughout the catalogue, you will find that within each subject area, our exam support titles are highlighted at the beginning of the section.

Last year was another busy year for us, as we launched our new full-colour revised edition of Chemistry for CSEC. This year, we are launching a new edition of the Caribbean classic, Beka Lamb, which includes study notes written specifically to help your students through their CSEC course. Our congratulations go to the author, the wonderful Zee Edgell, who was recently awarded an MBE for her service to literature and the community! You can find information about her prize-winning novels on page 6 and 21.

We wish you a happy and successful year!

Best wishes

Caribbean Writers Series

The LeopardV.S. REIDSet in Kenya during the Mau Mau rebellion, The Leopard is the story of Nebu, a simple Kikuyu who was once a houseboy for an English plantation owner. Now he is a Mau Mau who takes pleasure in witnessing the deaths of his former white masters. After a raid one day, Nebu leaves his Mau Mau gang and embarks on a journey of self-discovery that Time Magazine described as ‘an imaginative masterpiece’.

The Gaulin and the DoveIVAN HENRYThis new novel is about a group of boys coming of age in a village dominated by an entrenched plantocracy. It captures the spirit of an age when education was highly-valued as a means of escaping the sugar plantations and where a people were preparing for nationhood.

Frangipani HouseBERYL GILROYWinner of the GLC Black Literature CompetitionFrangipani House is the story of Mama King, trapped by age and infirmity, but indomitable. She escapes from her rest home in to the dangerous world of the poor. Frangipani House is a beautifully written protest at institutions that isolate, and a way of life that denies respect and responsibility for the weak.

One of our most popular and enduring CWS novels is now available in a new edition that includes study notes which help students prepare for their CSEC exams.

The accompanying study notes include exam-focused sections on:

social, literary and historical backgroundthemes, structure and stylecharacterization.

As well as chapter-by-chapter commentaries and CSEC exam-style questions
