Not only does the Caribbean have states that are autonomous, independent, intentionally dependent and nominally socialist, but the region is one of the most democratic in the world. Together, we examine the colonial history of the Caribbean, through a critical comparative politics lens, to help explain the political circumstances of select states. We review different forms of political government, assess the utility of Caribbean regional organizations and analyze the impact of Chinese, Taiwanese and the Russian presence in the region. We also evaluate the continued relationships with Europe and the U.S. Lastly, we evaluate the current and future political opportunities and challenges to Caribbean states. About This Course

The Caribbean, a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-racial region is both politically diverse

and politically fragmented because of its colonial and post-colonial histories. Not only

does the Caribbean have states that are autonomous, independent, intentionally

dependent and nominally socialist, but the region is one of the most democratic in the

world.

Together, we examine the colonial history of the Caribbean, through a critical

comparative politics lens, to help explain the political circumstances of select states. We

review different forms of political government, assess the utility of Caribbean regional

organizations and analyze the impact of Chinese, Taiwanese and the Russian presence

in the region. We also evaluate the continued relationships with Europe and the U.S.

Lastly, we evaluate the current and future political opportunities and challenges to

Caribbean states.

Develop expertise on the political evolution of a select number of Caribbean

states

Situate the events and global political dynamics that defined the Caribbean in the

20th (and 21st century) into the broader context of world politics

Improve critical thinking skills, as applied to Caribbean Studies, through

engagement with interdisciplinary scholarship and analysis of primary sources

Prerequisites: An open mind and a willingness to engage with new and different

information.

Time Commitment

This course includes considerable time spent doing readings, assignments and other

work toward course mastery. To be successful in this course, guidelines estimate that

you will need to spend at least seven to ten hours on coursework per week. This course

has a schedule with deadlines. This course is NOT self-paced. Do not try to ‘save-up’ all

course work to the last day of each unit. Doing work every day works best.
